YOUR misheard lyrics

Not mine, but my wife’s. We were driving from Sault Ste. Marie, ON to Ottawa when Golden Earring’s “Twilight Zone” came on the radio. After hearing it, she asked me what was meant by ‘when the bullet hits the phone’. (It’s ‘bone’, not ‘phone’.)

Don Martin would be proud of that one.

I think of that song all the time. On the road to the house there’s a sign that says ‘Entering golf cart zone.’

Fonebone!

I love the line “Where do I go, now that I’ve gone too far?”

From “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”:

Be no one around all day,
Beat it to 'em on my way!

(Actual lyrics:)

Free to run around all day,
Free to do it all my way!

I was thinking about this on the drive to the supermarket today, and wondered if I’d posted it. (I did.)

When I got into the supermarket, they were playing Blinded By The Light. I thought it was a nice coincidence.

Up until a couple of days ago I thought Blind Melon in the song No Rain were singing, “I’d like to keep my cheating strategy.”

Instead, the actual lyrics are, “I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today”.

I’m not sure how I feel.

That song was out for quite a while ( to my preteen time awareness ) before I even knew the name of the song and that the words were actually “blinded by the light”. My ears for years always heard it as something more like “Fly me by the light”, or rather more sonically, Flah meh bah the lot.

My wife said for years she thought that the chorus of the song 'Boys of Summer" went:

I can see you
Your bra still drying in the sun

It’s actually ‘Your brown skin shining in the sun’.

I sing her version whenever the song comes on the car radio.

I was listening to The Lovin’ Spoonful’s ‘Daydream’ and stumbled through the lyrics once again so I looked them up. I always thought:

And even if time ain’t really on my side
It’s one of those days for takin’ a walk outside
I’m blowin’ the day to take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face on somebody’s new-mowed lawn

was “and follow my face on somebody’s new-mowed lawn”
I pictured someone walking down the sidewalk following their face’s shadow on the lawn.’

And:

And even if time is passin’ me by a lot
I couldn’t care less about the dues you say I got
Tomorrow I’ll pay the dues for droppin’ my load
A pie in the face for bein’ a sleepy bull toad

was ‘Tomorrow I’ll pay the dues for droppin’ my loan
And cryin’ my face for bein’ a sleepy born son

To be fair, that last line is pretty unintelligible, imo.

I keep hearing the Hollies’ “On a Carousel”

as “Haunted Carousel”. Weird Al should do that as a Halloween-themed cover.

I just remembered one- in ZZ Top’s ‘Gimme all your lovin’, I always heard:

You got to make it hot
Like a puma in a beanery

I had to wonder, what’s a puma doing in a beanery, and why is that hot?

The actual lyrics are:

You got to make it hot
Like a boomerang, I need a repeat

Hollywood, Santa Monica… Those places are hot.

This is my new favorite mondegreen

I’m honored
