Gaaah! sorry, Hodge. Hang on, I’ll go fix it.
Last weekend we had a free HBO preview, so I watched “Meet the Parents.” Blech. I kept shouting at the screen things like, “Why on earth did you say that?” “What the hell are you thinking?” “Who in their right mind would think that was a good idea?” I like comedies, honest I do, but this was much too painful to enjoy.
Far from the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but certainly the worst I’ve seen recently: the latest version of The Time Machine. Merciful heavens, that was stupid! Did the people who wrote it have any idea how long 80,000 years is? They show a whole ice-age going by, the Hudson River cutting in like the Grand Canyon, mountains rising and falling… (Could all that happen in that period? I rather doubt it.) and yet legible written material from New York has survived–and people have learned to speak English from it. Up to that point, the movie was okay, not great but watchable, but that’s where it lost me. Disbelief could not be suspended.
The ending with Jeremy Irons also irritated me, but I’d have to watch the movie again to be specific about my reasons for disliking it.
A pity, because I really like Guy Pearce, and want to see him do well. This was a big disappointment,
