Your Multitool Of Choice

My Leatherman PST II is in for repair. I wonder if they can fix a 15 year old model. So I thought I’d ask people about their multitools:
[ol]
[li]What multitool(s) are you carrying now?[/li][li]Where (how often) do you carry them?[/li][li]What tools do you use the most?[/li][li]Why did you choose this model?[/li][/ol]

I find it interesting that locking knives are specifically banned in some locations - does that mean excluding a locking knife is not only a matter of cost and size, but allows a wider market for the tool?

Swiss Army Knife Champion, or the smaller Cadet. I know, taken singly the individual tools kinda suck. But it’s still a neat little package that carried Macgyver through seven seasons.

I got this awesome little screwdriver for my reading glasses at CVS for $3.99. It’s just a single flat ended screwdriver with extra hinge bolts in the handle and a cool little plastic magnifying glass with a hole in the center. You put the screwdriver through the hole and can see the hinge, bolt and blade without needing a second pair of glasses to fix the first.

I’m going to get a few more to keep at home and in the cars and in my dopp kit.

I’ve also got a Gerber multi-tool that I keep in the car. Not once have I ever had any use for it.

Yeah the newer Leathermans also have spectacle screwdrivers. I thought of carrying one around but I don’t think I’d use them.

I have my Dad’s old Swiss Army knife - it’s got to be at least 40 years old. I carry it in my purse so it’s on hand most of the time.

There is an eyeglass screwdriver for Swiss Army knifes that screws into the corkscrew for storage.

Leatherman Wave. I chose it because it has scissors and a phillips screwdriver among the other tools.

I prefer tools I can keep on my key chain. I have a small screwdriver set and some folding pliers, and sometimes a small box cutter type knife. I had a wrench gizmo that would fit a bunch of different sizes but it was a little too big, but I do have a bottle opener that works pretty well on soe bots. I’ve had little LED flashlights too but they keep breaking. My real multi-tool sits in the tool box and is rarely used.

I used to carry a leatherman. Now I have a Gerber that I carry every day. I use the knife and scissors most often, but also the flat head screwdriver mostly for opening paint cans.

I have:
A Leatherman Wave of uncertain age, which I inherited from my father. It’s got pliers, wire cutter, metric and American rulers, large flat screwdriver, jewelers’ flat and Phillips screwdriver (reversible), scissors, can opener, medium flat and Phillips screwdrivers (reversible), straight blade knife, serrated knife, file with three textures (one on each side and one on the edge), and saw.

A Wenger Swiss army knife, approximately 20-25 years old, with can opener, bottle opener, flat screwdriver, saw, scissors, knife, nail file, Phillips screwdriver, awl, and keychain. It used to have a tweezers and toothpick, too, but the tweezers broke, and the toothpick has gotten permanently wedged into its slot.

A 13-function utility pen, with short and long Xacto blades, small saw blade, small file, Phillips and flat jewelers screwdrivers, nail remover, pick, tweezers, and something called an “ear pick” that I’m afraid to know what it does. Oh, and a ballpoint tip, but that really doesn’t work well.

And yes, I’ve used almost all of the tools, on all three of them.

I have a Leatherman Juice that I carry when we’re hiking. There’s also a Swiss Army Knife around here somewhere that I never use. My everyday knife is just a Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion, which I use constantly.

I, too have a Wave, which I bought after specifically searching for the best multitool. I got the one with the nylon case and have it on the strap of my shoulder bag. I don’t use it much, but i do take it out now and then and play with it in a stress relief kind of way, and am always impressed at the overall quality and tight tolerances.

I carry a Leatherman Squirt because it’s small, but I have several SOG EODs in my cars and trucks.

SOG knives and tools are top of the line in quality and sharpness. I have at least a dozen of their products and recommend them highly.

I have a Leatherman that I used to carry with me all the time, now it mostly stays at home. Everyday carry for me is a Swiss Army knife. I don’t know models.

I carry a Gerber Multi-plier. The feature I love most is that I can pull it out of sheath and with a flick of my wrist have a pair of pliers open and ready to go. I rarely use any of the other features of the tool but that one feature makes it worth carrying everyday.

Entirely depends on the day. I always have a Gerber Clutch mini-tool in my pocket, along with a small SAK on my keyring. My pack has one of my many Leatherman Juice tools in it, as does my desk, the glove compartment of each vehicle and the wife’s purse. If I’m going to be actually out doing shit, I usually carry either a Gerber Evo or a Leatherman Wave on my belt.

I am large…I carry multitudes.

I carried a Leatherman super tool for about 10 years, used it constantly and literally wore it out. Now I carry a Gerber flik. Both are large well-made tools (and, arguably, one of the most useful items ever invented). On balance, I liked the Leatherman a little better… The pliers were much sturdier and the fold-back handles were better than the slide-out design of the Gerber. The leatherman also had a surprisingly good file which was very useful and a good limb saw.

The Gerber, OTOH has needle-nose pliers which are very useful for some things, but are not strong enough for serious holding and twisting. The Gerber also has a tiny (but very sharp) scissors which I thought I’d never use, but turn out to be quite handy.

Swiss Army Knife that I bought in 1971. Blade, awl, screw driver, can/bottle opener. It’s been to 120 countries with me. Carried it in my pocket every day for almost 40 years, but now I’m afraid to walk around “armed” and face Terry-law police harassment or metal detector nuisance, so I leave it home.

I currently carry a Leatherman Wave with 2 “bit cards,” containing just about every driver bit that I can imagine. Hex, torx, phillips, flat, square. The holster also carries a small single AAA flashlight and the bit extender.

I used to carry a Leatherman Pulse, but lost it on a vacation to Florida a couple of years ago while fishing.

Prior to that a Leatherman classic. I’ll never go back to a non-locking blade ever again. They are just plain dangerous as they can close while using them, potentially putting the sharp part against my flesh.

I go everywhere (except for courthouses/airports) with it, and find a reason to use it at least once a day, if not several. I prefer to have a ‘proper tool’ with me for repetitive work, but often I need to simply tighten a single screw or trim something, and the Leatherman on hand does the job every time.

I have a Gerber similar to that to. I love being able to flick my wrist and have an instant pair of pliers. I keep them in the console of my car.

Now to gross everybody out… When I’m at a stoplight and notice my nose hairs are getting a little rowdy; I flick out my Gerber tool and do a little cleaning up. The narrow tip of the pliers up the ole nostril and a quick yank keeps my nose from looking like a party favor (that last bit was a nod to Bob Euchre in Major League).
