Oh crap! I meant that to be “The Wrong Girl”.
Hey, I thought these lists were supposed to be 12 songs long…in that case, throw “Waiting for the Moon to Rise” back in there, along with about 60 other Belle and Seb songs…

Not bad… but I’d counter with:
A Baker’s Dozen of Rush:
Best of ELP:
Best of the Kinks:
Best of Billy Joel:
Best Of Bruce Springsteen:
Best of the Cars:
Ahem. “Sweet Jane”?! I mean, I get that you can’t put everything on there (though I think the only “Best of the Velvet Underground” would have to include at least all four studio albums and “Ride into the Sun”), but how can you leave off “Sweet Jane?” Personally, I’d’ve taken off “Train 'Round the Bend” and put in “Sweet Jane.” And I’d probably cut “I’m Sticking with You” and put on either “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” or “Some Kinda Love,” just because there’s not enough of the third album on your list. Otherwise, bravo!
astorian, you forgot Talk to the Wind. At least I hope you forgot it.
Best of Alice in Chains
Best of Metallica (2)
The first list is my 12 favorite AiC songs, while the second list is the 12 best Met songs. You will notice nothing from the “Load twins” appears, because those albums sucked.
In no particular order:
Sweet Emotion w/Dazed and Confused & Peter Gunn, intro-Uncle Salty*
Pink
The Farm
Janie’s Got a Gun
Train Kept a Rollin’
Come Together
Dream On**
Livin’ On The Edge
Love In An Elevator
Same Old Song And Dance
Walk This Way
Taste of India
*- as played often in 70’s tours
**- as heard at MTV’s 10th Anniversary show, with a full symphony orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen.
I guess I like the darker, more bass-driven ones.
Just to defend my selection a bit - well, I wanted to put Sweet Jane on there, but I think it’s a pretty mediocre song as far as VU goes. It’s just that everyone else talks about it so much that made me want it there in the first place. But I didn’t feel like cutting a song I really love to put in a song that everyone else loves, so I left it out.
And if I replaced “I’m Sticking with You” with any other song longer than 2 minutes and 40 seconds it wouldn’t fit on a CD, so no dice.
Best of U2
(in no order)
Actually, there were a lot of songs I agonized over, but that wasn’t one of them. I’ve chosen to limit myself to 12 as a (ahem) “discipline,” and that usually means a lot of good stuff doesn’t make it. My nearest misses were “Satori in Tangiers,” “Cadence and Cascade,” “The Night Watch,” and “Easy Money.”
Best of the Byrds:
Twelve favourite Genesis songs - although that would fill more than once CD:
Twelve Queen greats:
The best of Simon and Garfunkel:
Best of U2 (2)
Regarding my Metallica best of I’d probably take out Memory and put For Whom the Bell Tolls instead. I forgot about that one.
U2/Passengers - my view:
Beatles (controversial choice on #1)
Roxy Music, anyone?
Oasis
