- Labrador
- Labrador mix
- German Shepherd
- Havanese
- Springer Spaniel
We don’t have a dog [hubby not a big dog fan] but here’s my fave:
- Pembroke Welsh Corgis
- Boston Terriers
- Weimeraners
- Generic, all pupose mutt
- Collie
- Working Border Collie
- Working Border Collie
- Working Border Collie (I currently have three of the beasts - so they get three slots.)
- Australian Kelpie (working of course)
- If I had a non-working breed, it would be a long-haired Chihuahua or little kick-around-with mix dog. Something with no aspirations to working greatness at all :).

Like I have a choice. ![]()
I met a dog once who was a mix of german shepherd and bassett hound. She was nine years old but looked like a puppy, and had an absolutely lovely temperment. I want one. Since it doesn’t seem to be a new boutique breed I’ll ever be able to track down, here’s my list:
Bassett Hound
Corgi
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Schnauzer
West Highland Terrier
- Malamute
- Siberian husky
- Golden Retriever
- Irish Wolfhound
- Yorkie…as you can tell from the first 4, I like 'em big. But among small dogs I think Yorkies are superior. They’re so smart and spunky and outgoing, they’re little dogs with a big-dog attitude.
Pharoah Hound, Basenji, Rhodensian Ridgeback, Whippet, Greyhound.
The breeds above tend to have the kind of mellow yet reserved/independant personality I most enjoy, they are healthy for purebreds, don’t tend to bark much, don’t have much odor, are easy-care with their short fine fur and lack of drooling, and they don’t require exhorbitant amounts of exercise and mental stimulation not to drive you crazy (compared to, say, herding breeds, guarding breeds, gun dogs, toy dogs…).
Dogue de Bordeaux
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Boerboel
Pug
English Bulldog (though I doubt we’ll have another one after our current one crosses over. The reminder would be too painful)
If we don’t get another bulldog, I’d be fine with an American Staffordshire.
In no particular order:
Labrador retrievers
Standard poodles
Beagles
Basset hounds
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
Labs
Retrievers in general
Heelers
German Shepherds
Catahoulas
Munch and Red Stilletos thinking about starting a Catahoula thread after holidays but do you mind if I PM you re them. I’ve never known a dog with such a unique across the board temperment, damn they are willful buggers.
Also, Papsett, Merry Xmas and glad to see you back. Really. And if I happen to be on her iggy list does anyone mind quoting that part in a later post please.
-
Large dogs, medium-sized dogs and/or small dogs and/or dogs of any other sizes.
-
Black dogs, white dogs, brown dogs, mixed colored dogs, and/or dogs of any other colors.
-
Any other dogs not mentioned in above two points.
Merry Christmas to you too. I’ve missed this place.
Obviously, you’re not on my ignore list… I don’t have anyone on ignore. (As a funny aside… I had to really THINK what in iggy list was, because to a dog person, an Iggy is an Italian Greyhound. And this IS a dog thread… so it really taxed my brain for a moment or 2… :smack:)
You are welcome to PM me, but I don’t own, nor have I ever owned, a Catahoula. However, Stella went through about 2 years of being extremely stubborn and hard to train. I’m no expert, but I’d be happy to chat with you about it.
I’ll keep an eye out for the Catahoula thread. ![]()
- Boston Terrier
- Bulldog
- Boxer
- Pug
- Miniature Poodle
coincidentally, I (or my family) have had each one of these dogs (except a boxer). I love them all.
A mail carrier told me that he never has met a boxer that was unfriendly. (obviously anecdotal).
Siberian Husky
Alaskan Husky (or ANY northern mix)
Malamute
ACD
Lab mix
- Border Collie (We’ve owned three - best dogs ever!)
- Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Golden Retriever
- Collie
Rather than rank them, I’ll sort mine by situation:
Have a lot of room and a big parcel of land: Border Collie
Don’t have much room, shedding is an issue, and you have vermin in your yard who need eradication: Yorkshire Terrier (preferably the larger variety that purists look down upon)
Have a moderate amount of room and a desire to intimidate casual observers: Rottweiler (the vast majority of whom wouldn’t hurt a fly, but there are situations where you would like others to assume they would)
Low maintenance little guy who’s both a player and a snuggler: Puggle
All the rest. I would much rather spend time with most dogs than with most people, and it’s not close.
- Corgi (either Pembroke, Cardi, or mixed) – cute, smart, and playful
- Sheltie (see the above, add fluffy)
- Border Collie (wicked smart and beautiful to watch working)
- Papillon (too cute for words, and, I hear, generally better disposition than most toy-sized dogs)
- Puli (for obvious reasons)
I also have a fondness for pretty much all spitz dogs, especially Shiba Inus.
German Sheperd
Chiwawa
French Bulldog
Boxer
Bull Terrier
