I have become mesmerized by live YouTube channels that show web cams from around the world. There are lots of them, but my current favorite is “Beautiful Earth”
There are 80 locations on this one, and the picture cycles through them over and over with some quiet, jazzy music in the background. I leave it on my TV when I’m reading or on my computer (like now). Beach in Thailand, bar in the Virgin Islands, downtown Odessa (Ukraine), volcanic eruption in Spain, busy intersection in Tokyo, street in Korea (EVERYONE masked!), critter cam in Denmark, narrow boats on a canal in Scotland, as well as St. Petersburg, Stockholm, New York City, Boston, Las Vegas, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Santa Monica Pier, a village in the Czech Republic… Urban settings, countryside, beaches, rain, snow, dawn, dusk, night, and broad daylight. Trains, crowded highways, sailboats, bridges. Every now and then, there will be pictures from the International Space Station.
If I can’t sleep, I’ll put it on and it’s better than any sleeping pill. If you’re in a funky mood, it can help put things in perspective. All those people and places! And such natural beauty, too. I’ve tried some other channels, but I’ve gotten so familiar with these locations, I feel like I’m checking up on places I kind of know. I want to see what they look like at different times of the day.
