N.B., You gotta watch out for all this Texas talk coming from people from… Houston. These folks are practically in Louisiana!
Hey, me too. I used to pack honeydews for Griffin & Brand in Pecos, Redford and Presidio. 108 and 110 really aren’t a problem under those conditions.
I say that and then I’m reminded of a friend who dies in Santa Elena Canyon in the Big Bend from the heat. You gotta keep your head.
I hear you: I recall that there were always a couple of deaths a year of people not being wary of the heat and dehydration. In the summers, the hot winds around Presidio hit you and suck the moisture right out of you. Ah, memories!
(My M.S. thesis field area, and much of both the field camp I was at and later T.A.'d, was right outside of Presidio in BBRSP.)
Mmmm… Pecos Cantelopes… Presidio Onions… (And you can now add to that list “Balmorhea and Imperial Shrimp”.)
But at least it’s a dry heat, right?
Yeah, but I’m from West Texas.
My uncle, Houston born (1950) and raised, pronounces it “Uston” (No H.) I’ve also heard a couple contemporary Houstonians (20 yr olds) pronounce it “Uston.” I’ll grant you that the “H” pronunciation seems to be winning over the no “H” version, but some folks do say it without the aich.
Now’s that “west” Texas or Honest-to-God, West-of-the-Pecos WEST Texas?
My location may say E-City, but I’ve still got land in Brewster County!
Yeah, Pantellerite, but is it north county or south county?
Good and very legitimate question…
And it’s in SOUTH county, thankyouverymuch!
I’ve got you BOTH beat…EIGHTH-GENERATION TEXAN here…
My great, great, great…great granddad was Elijah Alcorn, a Baptist Preacher, who settled the Bastrop/Giddings/Independence area with ol’ Stephen F. Austin’s “Original 300.” In fact, my great…granddad helped establish the Independence Baptist Church and was one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. Now THAT’S a set of roots!!
Some have asked why the pride in Texas…well, it boils down to this: Texas is the ONLY state that was once it’s own independent, sovereign nation. Also, if you go overseas, you can tell someone you’re from New Hampshire or Long Island, or what-have-you, and you have to add “United States.” But you NEVER have to add that when you say you’re from TEXAS.
Oh, and you all have the opportunity to envy me now…
NoClueBoy:
I live in Kerrville, which is pretty much in the HEART of the Texas Hill Country…
The company I work for is based in Kansas City, Missouri. They keep asking me why I don’t move to KC. I keep telling 'em, “Hell, I’m already living in the one place in Texas everyone is trying to get TO!”
Occasional Texan here. I keep leaving, but I always make it back.
I think I would like to summer up north and winter in San Antonio. That is a good compromise, I think.

Damned snowbirds…
In that case, I’ll have a beer for you on the porch tonite.
Possibly the finest song ever written about the greatness of Texas. It’s called ‘What I Like About Texas.’ JJW and Gary P. Nunn each have a version of the song, I believe. You should be able to find either one without much trouble on your non-Napster peer-to-peer file sharing application of choice.
I commend you and others for recommending cold, cold Lone Star Beer, but let’s not forget the greatness of Shiner Bock Beer…
Um, I know Texans like to think they’re the biggest thing around. I’d just like to point out that my home province of British Columbia is 365,287 sq. miles. Ontario is 412,581 and Quebec is 594,860.
Texas is 268,601.
Hello down there! We Canadians just love cute little things!
(zoogirl runs like hell…)
Actually, my best friend’s dad is from Texas and I kinda have a soft spot for the place. I think drawls are way cool too.
omg haha that was f’in great!
you are right about this… i live in dallas but i used to go to houston and galveston and san antonio and every city in between wichita falls and laredo with my grandpa who was a car transporter… went down there to drop some off, picked some up and brought them back here… anyway…
his truck back then had AC so cold it would spit condensation out… just like on a cold day with your breath, only the opposite, and it looked kinda like steam… anyhow… we were about to go into mcdonalds… nice 65 degrees inside the truck, i open the door, put one foot down, take a breath… or rather, i TRIED to take a breath… BAM, fell right to the ground. it was SO humid it was like breathing in that movie the abyss where they breathed the oxygen saturated fluid…
i will never forget that scene as i fell to the ground.
humidity SUCKS!
I live in a Dallas-suburb:Mesquite, texas.
Home of The World Championship Rodeo and ID software, creators of: Doom,Quake and Wolfenstein.
I love the Tech + Cowboy combo, i think texans are brilliant people. And the Southern Drawl is charming, comforting and soothing.
If you have any doubts about our charm and brains well… look at the last 4 terms of office of the presidency.
Now about you Yanks who wanna come visit, well…“We’re glad you like texas, now go home”.
Shiner bock was better before they decided to start calling it a premium beer and selling it at import prices. Personally, I was always more fond of the Shiner lager. I toured the brewery a couple of years ago.
I got REALLY lucky two springs ago. I took the wife to the Hill Country for the wildflowers (the next step in my begging her to move there) and we happened to stop in at Luchenbach for a beer. Turns out it was JJW’s birthday, and there was going to be a party there that night. We managed to get a ticket, and got to see him perform for his fanclub in the little place there. I got part of it on video, but not that song.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time… I’ve never seen Jerry Jeff, but I saw his son do a few songs with Pat Green once…
As for the beer, I’m a more recent entry into the world of adult beverages, so I don’t know of the Shiner Lager. In fact, most people my age just think it’s Shinerbock and don’t realize they make other types of beer
I hate that Shiner is never considered a ‘domestic’ beer for purposes of drink specials at bars. I live a few hours from Shiner, and I’ve had many a heated discussion with bartenders about why a beer produced less than 200 miles from where we’re standing is less ‘domestic’ than a beer made in Wisconsin or something… I’m 0 for about 35 in those arguments.
Zoogirl , two words “Global Warming”
