Probably not a bad idea. I bet I’m not the only one who stops by ATMB just once every few months, to make sure there are no rules changes or clarifications I ought to be aware of.
At any rate, I think the new policy is an excellent idea. Skips us past the outraged “Why the Sam Hill did you ban Soandso, he was the best poster ever” part, and gets us right to the “well hell, I guess you had some pretty good reasons after all” part. A very commendable shortcut.
I agree. With rare and generally trollish exceptions, we don’t think you moderatorfolk are jackbooted thugs or anything, nor are we ghoulish lookee-loos with lotsa schadenfreude in our souls, we’re just curious and like to know these things.
I think The Pit would be a better place to put the notices as well. It also provies a starting point if someone wants to moan about poster X being banned unfairly. Restrictions in ATMB practically guarantee that someone is going to open a Pit thread anyway, might as well head that one off at the pass as well.
Unless the admins want to have two (or more) separate threads, for reasons I can’t divine.
My initial thoughts are that I’d prefer to keep the annoucements in ATMB. Posting them in the Pit just seems like we’re inviting abuse of the erstwhile poster. If people feel strongly enough about it that they need to say Pit-like things, they can open a Pit thread. Plus it will get people checking ATMB more often and maybe they will keep up with the rules.
Having looked through these warnings, and glanced through the threads, I really can’t see what the fuss is about. Most of it is pretty minor stuff, and other people were doing the same sort of things to him. I’ve seen far worse than this which has passed without comment. I’ve been on the receiving end of a fair bit of it. I really don’t see anything so bad about this.
Take this as a “shoot-from-the-hip” moderator-member comment–(it ain’t official, just my personal informed opinion):
Mods and Admins actually have a life away from this board(“daddy–take us somewhere–we’re bored sitting here while you’re on the computer”).
Sometimes we spot the bad guys right away, and get on their asses right away, and look like heroes. We warn them, we cut them slack, we cajole them, we try to make this a place that would be hospitible to almost any assh—er, um, member.
But some people JUST DON’T GET IT. You warn them, and they do the same thing.
Sometimes, posters commit acts which are against the rules. We as mods/Admins don’t always see this. We cannot possibly read every post on this board. We depend in large part for members reporting the most agregious posts. We sometimes don’t agree with your opinion, but we DO READ IT. And, when it makes sense to us, we act on it.
Sometimes, bad posts DO make it through. We CANNOT read everything.
Report something that you take offense to. Mods/Admins won’t hold it against you for reporting a post that is against the rules, even if it’s just your opinion, and we don’t agree with you.
But, if you don’t report it, we might miss it.
If we tell you to “knock it off” and you don’t, you’re on borrowed time here.
