I just got this game used and had low expectations for it since I didn’t really like Windwaker but it’s turned out to be quite fun. The story is throwaway Zelda like all of them but the puzzles are fun and I actually like the boat. So far the only things I don’t like are the mandatory stylus control because my hand obstructs my view alot of times and the spin and sommersault are not reliably pulled off. I also don’t like the exchanges between my fairy and the boat guy. They go to long and they are very repatitous.
I didn’t care for Twighlight Princess either but this one is really good.
I like all Zelda games, in fact I’m one of the nerds that debates timeline theories jsut for the hell of it. So it goes without saying I love PH (and TP but whatever). The only issue I have is the rolling contol but it’s not THAT nescessary of a maneuver to pull off on the fly so I didn’t really mind.
I have the same problem with it that everyone else seems to have–the bloody temple of the ocean king. If I have to dodge one more phantom…(I gave up and bought Advance Wars instead).
Other than that though, it’s a decent game. Nice us of the stylus, though sometimes I really wanted to us the D-pad for movement, like when throwing a boomerang or something. And I can’t pull off hte somersault reliably (thankfully, I don’t have to). The grappling hook is a little unintuitive sometimes though–after a miss I tend to stand around throwing it everywhere rather than moving.
Overall it’s a decent game, but whoever designed the temple needs to be fired. Out of a cannon. Into the sun.
Damn. I thought I just went through it for the last time getting the location of the Temple of Courage or whatever. You mean you have to continually go through this thing for the whole game?
Don’t spoil the story or anything but is that true?
Yup. There’s about 12 or 13 levels in all I believe. At one point you do get a shortcut to the sixth level—just before all the really annoying floors. It’s a fun game, and I’d probably go on to finish it if it weren’t for that.
Great
Majora’s Mask
Link to the Past
Ocarina of Time
Good
Wind Waker
Link’s Awakening
Legend of Zelda
Twilight Princess
Alright. Nothing really new but a decent game.
Minish Cap
Oracle of Ages
Oracle of Seasons
Some parts were ok but others were freaking annoying!
Phantom Hourglass
I love some of the stuff you can do with the wand but that they force you to use it when walking around was annoying. Fighting looks stupid now since you often have your back to your opponent, your shield isn’t as useful or handy. Little things like that really add up. And I have big hands so holding the wand was awkward. Plus it’s kind of uncomfortable to always be holding the DS with your left hand then pushing down on it with the wand in your right hand. It’s just unbalanced and I played a lot of the game with the DS laying on my bed.
I hated, hated, hated driving the boat, way worse then the Wind Waker. The game has some treasure hunting which will occasionally leave you with tons of duplicate booty you cannot use and should sell for rupees but you can only sell things one at a time and you have to click the damn screen so many times to do that. Also rupees became worthless so fast. I much preferred the way the other games did it where you kept getting bigger and bigger wallets and things to buy. I don’t think I ever had to buy any potions. Which sucks because you have to buy stuff in order to get some things. So there I was buying all three potions, drinking them immediately. Then leaving and returning to buy them again. I gave that up pretty quick. So much for going for 100% as I did in every other Zelda (except II) although that was also nixed by the annoying social trading stuff.
The place is so freaking small! Only 4 maps! If they made the game more 2-d they could have made it so much larger. And the 3-d stuff was so useless.
I’m surprised they didn’t force you to yell “Fire!” “Ice!” and such to cast spells into the microphone.
But I really liked what they did with the boomerang, mouse bomb things and the grappling hook. And I actually didn’t mind the repeating temple. In fact it was a great way to collect booty. Also it was fun to see how fast you could do it.
I can’t believe that the “new” Nintendo could leave such a glaring flaw in a game like they did the Temple of the Ocean King. Everything else about the game is fantastic. More games need to be controlled this way.
Yeah, that Ocean King temple was one of the worst ideas I’ve ever encountered. Yes, Nintendo, there’s nothing people like more in a portable game than repeating the exact same very long stages seven or eight times.
Seriously. I just got a DS and this game (If the Wal-Mart near me didn’t have the crimson/black DS, I wouldn’t be out $170… ) but yeah, worst idea ever. If they had to make you go back to the same temple, at least put a way to warp to the newest part of the dungeon every time you go there, not just the one that shows up at the halfway point, or something. Who in the world ever thought people would enjoy that?
But other than that, no big complaints. Sometimes using the stylus to move is annoying. I’d prefer using the D-pad to move and the stylus just to attack, pick things up, etc…I constantly attack bomb flowers instead of picking them up, or run off a cliff instead of throwing something off of it.
