Zero Punctuation Review: The Conduit

Given his hatred of the Wii, if a Wii game gets a decent review then it is probably a pretty damn good game.

The other thing about ZP, he seems to say those things about games that most other people only discover for themselves after playing the game for a couple of weeks. How many times have you played a game and at first though, “AWESOME!” and then a week in you think, “WTF!”

Holy god that was annoying. I dug my heels deep and made my most heroic effort but I could not get halfway. My hand was actually trembling over the “X” in the upper-right after 25 seconds, and the intro was 20 seconds.

I thoroughly enjoy his reviews and definitely pay attention to what he thinks, because he really is an insightful reviewer, always getting at the veyr core of what makes a game good or bad.

That said, I’ve also noticed that it sometimes seems like he hates certain games because he’s really bad at them. I know it’s pretty frustratring when you repeatedly get your hoop kicked every ten seconds, but some people just aren’t good at certain games. I generally dislike sports games, and not surprisingly I’ve epically failed at every one I’ve ever played. But I can’t be sure which aspect comes first, so I withhold judgement.

You know, that’s almost the exact same comment as the last guy on the Dope who tried ZP for the first time because of us. That wasn’t you was it?

Anyways, people on the ZP forums used to post transcripts, and I looked for one for the aforementioned poster so he could actually comment on the veracity of the review. Fortunately, he now has his own column. Why don’t you try following that link (post #2) and seeing if you think his points are valid?

It might’ve been. I can imagine having the same reaction and then blocking the incident out had I ever come across that before.

Out of wonder, what was so bad about it? I’m not saying it’s bad you didn’t like it, I’m just trying to figure out why you had such a visceral reaction to it. (Was it the “he talks too fast and has an accent I’m not used to” thing? That gets a lot of people…)

I don’t care if someone has an accent. It’s because he talks too fast and says really unfunny stuff while other really unfunny things flash all over the screen.

Fast talking is part of the schtick. (And I think when he’s on target, he really is damned funny.)

Anyway, he recommended Braid with some reservations too, and said it was loads better than most games out there.

For a minute and a half, then?

I happen to like the interface for Wii FPS’s (it’s a hell of a lot better than using two analogue sticks when it comes to responsiveness) and he considered it a detriment so I suspect that I’d get more enjoyment out of the game. On the other hand cookie cutter level design is one of my biggest complaints about FPS’s which is another one of his complaints.

I was barely able to breath the first few times I watched his reviews… Different strokes I guess. His humor works for me.
I find that Yahtzee is a pretty good reviewer… Sure, he mainly focuses on negatives, since ranting is what he does, but a large portion of the games he’s reviewed have had positive aspects that he approved up. A review as bad as the Conduit are rather rare(though not as rare as his glowingly positive reviews.

I’ve bought a few games based on his recommendation(Saints Row 2 being one of them, which is an amazing game(though the PC port has some issues :frowning: )), or at least ones he enjoyed with reservation, and so far he’s a pretty good match for my tastes.

I like ZP but don’t really take anything he says seriously. His review of Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 contained multiple factual errors, including an unforgivable one that proved he had not played it for longer than an hour.

I can’t watch too many reviews at once because they’re all very similar. Still mostly funny though.
