Zombies coming to TV?

According to IMDB, Frank Darabont is producing a zombie series for AMC – The Walking Dead, based on a graphic novel series.

Anyone know the status? I can’t tell from the IMDB page. Is it still in the pilot stage?

Anyone read the graphic novels? Are they any good?

I’m just looking for more information without having to wade through a bunch of year-old web pages, most of which are quite ugly and cluttered.

Oh, yeah. The comics are quite good. A realistic look at a zombie invasion, plenty of important, relevant characters dying unexpectedly… it can translate excellently to the screen.

It’s pretty dark and gritty - let’s just say the zombies aren’t the worse thing! I’m a big fan of the graphic novels. I’ve heard AMC has green-lit a 6 episode run and casting is currently underway.

The graphic novel series is excellent. Very, very dark and seemingly neverending. You can’t get too attached to any of the characters, which should be interesting for a series. I have a dream cast in my head (which sort of resembles a Firefly reunion) which isn’t being matched, exactly, by reality, but I think it makes real sense to have a zombie TV series (in addition to the also excellent Dead Set).

io9 is keeping pretty good tabs on the series.

Well cool. I’ll check out the comics.

Considering the popularity of zombies, I’m surprised this hasn’t been done before. Do you think it’s because zombies (done right) are too gory for TV?

Too gory, yes.

And in many instances, you have to have the threat of actually killing off characters, and a lot of shows are loathe to do that.

Will be interesting to see how they do that with TWD. I’m very excited about this, and will be keeping my cable package JUST for it, if I have to.

Holy shit. This is the best news I’ve ever heard regarding an upcoming TV series.

…I’ll be the naysayer… It started to suck after about book 7? Roughly around issue 50, I dropped it. The pacing was glacial and the characters ceased being interesting. I felt that it was heading into “who can I shockingly kill every third issue after nothing happening for the previous 2” territory

I think the show will be pretty good though. It will certainly fix the pacing problems.

Looks like it will be filming in Atlanta. And AMC seems to be taking a let’s-see-how-this-goes-over approach, ordering only 6 episodes.
