Adults: what childish things do you do for fun?

This is inspired by jarbabyj’s thread on turning thirty, and I’d like to think of it as a kind of birthday present to her.

I love being an adult. Being a kid sucked; there were all sorts of arbitrary rules, made by people who I needed to respect for various silly reasons, and nobody would let me do what I really wanted to do. Adulthood, in direct contrast to my expectations, has turned out to be one big smorgasbord of fun. I get to do what I want, wear what I want, get the job I want, and do the things I want to, whenever I want! I have to deal with the consequences of my decisions, but hey… they’re my decisions.

And so, dear Dopers, I ask you… what childish stuff do you do? Stuff that you thought adults would never indulge in, but that you, as an adult can do with abandon?

Personally, at age 37, I have a bunch of friends over every couple of weeks, and we play cool new board games; the kind of board games I always wanted as a kid. Settlers of Cataan, Elfenland, Drakon, Chrononauts… it’s a blast. We drink caffeine, we eat chips or cookies, we stay up until 2am, and we make tons of noise. Good, clean, childlike fun.

I also paint miniatures, play guitar, play computer games, play Playstation games, watch movies late into the night. The best part about being an adult, though, is that I get to do all this with someone I love. And… we get to have sex, too!

Being an adult is fun!

I love Settlers of Cataan! Especially the seafarers expansion set…

Off the top of my head, I still play with Legos. My apartment is full of 80 zillion Star Wars Lego playsets, and I love to blow off stress by flying Slave-1 or an X-Wing around the place. In full view of the neighbors.

I still play Nintendo, and I still gravitate towards the kiddie games, such as the Super Mario series.

I still read comic books on a weekly basis, although I daresay that it’s literature for all ages.

Count me in with the video games. I couldn’t give them up if I tried.

I also love to color. I have a huge stack of coloring books and a cigar box full of naked crayons worn down to little waxy nubs (except for burnt sienna, I have four or five of those in nearly mint condition). Nothing fills an empty hour better than laying down layer after layer of color onto neat little pre-formed illustrations. It’s like comfortable creativity.

Plus, I can’t pass up an opportunity to swing. Not the adult sexy kind of swinging but the childlike, hands gripping chains, ankles in the air, hair flying back kind of swinging. Wheeeeeee!

I don’t know if I actually classify as an “adult” just yet (I’m 23 and working in the “real world”), but every now and again, I like to roll down hills.

I like to do a cartwheel in a library. And I also LOVE to roll down hills.

First thing that came to mind when reading the thread title: PS2.

Settlers of Cataan is very addictive. Glad I don’t have it.

I just went swinging with my sister (she’s 41, I’m 40) a few weeks ago when we took her son to the park (he’s 2).

I also like to color.

I"m 22 I still get up early on saturday mornings with a bowl sugar lumpy wheaty goodies with milk, and watch the Saturday morning cartoons.

I like to poke my wife in the butt to make her jump and squeal. Hard to get more childish than that.

Hey, MrVisible, do you play RoboRally? Based on your lineup of game titles, and your mention of miniatures, I think that if you aren’t already playing this game, you certainly should be.

Jump in puddles.

Another swinger here. And I love to slide

I color, but there are no waxy nubs in this house- now that I’m a grownup with a grownup salary, I will never again sharpen a crayon- I buy a new box when my crayons get too dull to be fun anymore. And save the old ones, for shading large areas.

Video games aren’t childish. The average video gamer is in his/her mid to late 20s, and PC gamers are slightly older (according to industry research).

Me, I’m 21 and still love The Transformers. The DVD box set was a godsend.

I run with my grocery cart through the parking lot and jump on the bar on the bottom for a ride.

I dance or jump up and down when I’m excited about something.

My son and I hide under the blanket from Mr. S or just to talk.

I’m another grocery cart rider. What’s great about grocery shopping at 4 am, the parking lot is mostly empty (lots of room to roam) and there are few people to see me acting so silly.

I watch Looney Tunes on Saturday mornings and get excited if a favorite comes on (especially Daffy Duck).

I pull on the bottom loop of people’s shoelaces so the laces tighten up on their feet. Yeah, I know, it’s annoying…

Watch Between the Lions

Invite friends over for board games

and, for maximum fun,

skip, hula hoop, and/or jump rope.

I love kite-flying (although I just realized it’s been a while).

And board games.

And now we can afford the toys we always wanted as a kid!

I pick all the pecans out of the mixed nuts and eat them first. I bought them, I’m the grownup, and I can do what I want.

And I make, and collect dollhouse miniatures. I don’t have a dollhouse yet, but I want to wait 'til we have room for a BIG one. With working lights and plumbing and everything!

I watch disney movies in theatres all the time.

The one time I found myself completely under a childish spell, was a few months ago when me and my girlfriends made homemade play-doh.
We ended up making little balls of it and throwing it at each other in the kitchen. We made little forts, made different types of dough-bombs, and we played this for about 4 hours straight, screaming things like, “man down! man down! abort mission!!!”
Until we stopped, looked around, and wondered what the fuck we were doing. We were attacking like we were 8 years old (add another 10 years and thats how old we really are).

I also have an obsessed with playing Hide-n-go-seek.
