Is FHM responsible for ****ing up the SDMB?

Tonight has been far worse than usual as far as SDMB speed is concerned. I went over to FHMs website and found that the SD page was in their top 100 websites listing. FHM is a pretty popular magazine, can that kind of publicity have a significant effect on the SDMB or is it just a co-incidence?

I'd have to say that, having been on line here since about 6:00 PM EDT tonight, I have found it faster than most nights this last week or so.

The whole "board is slow" topic is far from new. For perhaps as long as two years we've been discussing ways to alleviate the problem. So any recently compilated list of URLs can't be a strong factor.

Besides, you can't point to a single source to credit/blame for the SDMB's popularity. If you've seen any of the "How did you find this place?" threads, you know that there's no overwhelmingly cited source that steered members our way. For some it's the books, or the old board. For others, Cecil's column (and a board URL) in their weeklies got them hooked. Others were recruited by members. A handful got here by way of link from another site. Some just so happened to find the place. Lotsa variety.

A mention on a list like FHM's may be nothing by comparison to, say, one of our members running around their neighborhood with the board URL written on their foreheads.

I told Fenris Attention WhoreR to quit doing that, but he won't listen to me.

There's also going to be somewhat of a delay between someone linking to the Straight Dope, and people becomming active on the board. A not-unusual pattern is for a person to come here, read some of the old columns, lurk on the board for a while, and then register and start posting.
