The Zappo Appreciation Thread

Zappo doesn't post here too much anymore (which is criminal, IMHO), but several of you may know him by his LiveJournal name, sadillac.

If you don't know him, you should.

Zappo is a remarkable man. I knew of him here on the SDMB, but in LJ was where I got to know him personally.

I met him last November, when he came up here to Michigan for Cranky's Ramadan mini-fest. I'd liked hiim before then, but after meeting him in person...well, now I really REALLY like him.

TruePisces recently had a birthday, which I would not have been able to attend without the help of Zappo. He bought gifts for my kids, too. And he's talked to my daughter on the phone--she too thinks he rocks.

He's smart, he's funny, he's extraordinarily nice. He's my friend.

Sal, you rock. Thanks for everything.

Hear hear!

Whether you call him Zappo, sadillac, or just Sal, he's a prince of a man, and someone I'm pleased and honored to call my friend.

Seph, you are aware that Mrs. Dave-Guy has claimed him as her boyfriend?

Zappa rules! I had the pleasure of meeting him at Dope-O-Ween 2001. I still remember that story about that little statue...senőr something-or-other...

I loves me some Zappo! I had the pleasure of taking in Road to Perdition and a lovely lunch with him one fine day last February or March, and I've been looking forward to seeing him again ever since. He's funny, thoughtful, and just all-around cool. (And he knows from Hudson Hornets, too!)

It couldn't have been last February or March. I was in Mississippi then. I don't know when it was, then. In the summer. The movie is set in February - that's why I got confused.

I miss Zappo too! I emailed him to tell him so. I met him when -- exhibiting his first instance of questionable judgment, I might add -- he climbed aboard Rue's Mobile Dope Fest and visited here.

Zappo is quite possibly the most awesome human being I've ever met. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him at this year's New York Dopefest, and he's funny, charming, friendly, and just an all-around great guy. So, Sal, good on you for being such a good guy. It's a real honor and a pleasure to know you.

Zappo is a fine man, and not just because he likes The Hudsucker Proxy and provides Tastykakes to those in need.

Just to add my voice to the chorus, last October when my dad died, Zap came to the funeral home during visitation hours. I was touched that someone I'd only met once would drive all that way. He's a sweetheart. I haven't run into him on IM for eons, but we trade emails, and getting a note from him brightens my day.

Love ya, Sal!!

Well now! I'll have you know, technically that was Shibb's MobileDope. I just instigated it.

And his "questionable judgement"? That was when he wouldn't kidnap you. It was a perfect plan and he blew it.

It think that is his one character flaw, he won't kidnap wimmins in front of their family. Gotta work on that. But then he'd be perfect and God would take him from us to be an angel. We wouldn't want that, so Zap, you keep not kidnapping wimmins. We need you down here!

Been wondering about where Zappo's been lately. He was the first person to pronounce me "jake" on the board. If anybody talks to him let him know he still has an open invitation to visit swampcave TM for beer and okra anytime.

Where is he, anyway? I don't even know how to find livejournal thingies...

Along with all the other good things that's been said about Sal, I've found that he's always there when you need him. In good times, in bad times... he takes the time to listen to you, to laugh with you, to comfort you and to console you. As Persephone mentioned, he got her here for my birthday... which was the best present anyone could ever ask for. He embodies the true meaning of "friend" on so many levels that anyone who is lucky enough to call him that is one hundred times luckier than they were before they met him.

I love you dearly, Sal. Thank you for everything you've done for me.

You guys. . .

It's easy to be friends with folks like you. . .I have to say that each and every Doper I've met in person (and most of the ones I've only met online) are great people.

bouv: It's Senor Mysterioso.

swampy: Thanks. One day I shall take you up on that invite. And you have a standing invite to Fabulous Castell Zappo for beer, pretzels and scrapple.

Lindy, racinchikki, Cranks, Rue, and Dave: The feeling is mutual. In spades.

bodypoet: I miss you too! Along with Ellen. We should plan another MidWestFest and I should drive out for pie and Scotch eggs and fish and chips (but not all at once)!

Juniper: You're only two hours (or less) away from me and the other central PA Dopers, and Jadis. We should have a Fest and soon. You host.

Persephone: Euty is one lucky SOB. You know that? But don't worry. . .there's enough Zapirificness for you and Mrs. The Dave-Guy to share.

Anita: Rowrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks, you guys.

Gingy and Young Mr. Gingy: You guys are the cat's pajamas with matching robe and slippers. And that fella in the tux and sneakers you were hanging out with at your wedding is cool too.

Heapy, baby: Right back atcha, dude. Don't you go changin'.

Zappo's about the coolest guy ever. He's allowed the Doorses to use his house on more than one occasion (sorry about the crystal candlesticks, man. I could've sworn we moved them out of the baby's reach, honest! ), and is a lot of fun to eat wings with.

He's also Aaron's future employer.

Well, ya know, you guys ain't so bad neither. And the King of All Boogas is too cute for words. So you can keep him.

And it's no big deal about the candlesticks. The spit-up on the daVinci was what had me in the dumps for awhile.

The esteemed Mr. Zappo is my sushi buddy. Speaking of which, we need to remedy the lack of shared sushi sometime soon...you going to the Morimoto Philly dinner?

I think you're aces.

Munch: Believe me, I regretted that for a day or two afterward!

Superdude: Same here. Maybe someday I can get me back to Lou'ville and we can have a few more beers.

Jadis: Well, if I'm aces, that makes you a full house. I think you're swell. And yes, I'm hoping to make it to Morimoto, subject to some other demands on my time that day. I'll be down at the folks' for Easter, so it looks good.

GKW: Pleased to meetcha! Actually, I have two Cadillacs; a '66 Fleetwood Brougham (double black with a red interior) and a '90 Brougham d'Elegance (double white with red leather). Where have you been all my life?

Send a picture and I'll go talk to the dealer. Instead of the new wagon thing, how about a '56 Hess & Eisenhardt Custom ViewMaster?

Zappo has one white Caddy. Red interior. Sweet ride. Oh yes. It is lovely indeed.

But he's also got a butt-kicking Buick Roadmaster. Now that is some serious automobilage. I see it, and I want to start singing "Love Shack." You haven't lived until you've ridden in the Roadmaster with six other rowdy Dopers and Sal at the wheel, hollering "Hey! Don't you make me come back there!"

Persephone wouldn't do that, would she?

I think Sal's cars have a temporary loss of direction field inside them whenever you have more than three Dopers inside. Both times I've been in them with big groups of Dopers, we've either made a wrong turn or there's been disagreement on where we were supposed to go (a la Lindy and I trying to help Sal navigate back to the hotels in NYC last January).

But, really, if you can't have fun getting confused with Dopers, who CAN you have fun getting confused with? Especially with Sal at the wheel?

Zappo I like your taste! I fell in love with big old cars as a child when I first saw my grandma's pink caddy convertible. It must have been a really old model because its fins were more rounded than pointy. I vaguely remember my mother's embarassment- like it was some slutmobile or something- but I lusted after it.

swampy: I'm so with you. Sea urchin is just gross. Some nice spicy tuna rolls, though. . .yum.

KCSuze: The fish and chips at the Claddagh contains a LOT of fish. And quite a few chips.

GKW: I say again, where the hell have you been all my life?

And where are you now? Maybe you and me and Eddy can go for a cruise sometime. . .
