Okay, I’m back from NYC and no longer cowed by snow. Time to revive the Tuesday quiz night ritual of Doper teams at Seattle’s George & Dragon pub.
Next session: Tuesday, Jan 13. Who’s gonna be there? I’m in, and I’m sure the resolutely-not-SDMB-addicted inkysplotchy will be showing up. Anyone else?
(My goal is to get enough people one of these days to field two teams and bump up the rivalry until our heads explode.)
Is bar trivia a big deal in Seattle? I happen to host a few games in Atlanta, where it has a huge following. It seems, however, that if you leave the area, people have no idea what you’re talking about.
It’s not super-popular, but the George & Dragon gets 100 or more people a week. And I think there are a few other locations in the area that have their own quiz nights, although it was more popular a few years ago.
For us too, holidays are finally over. Our long list of Xmas parties, get-togethers and visits came to a close (finally!) last week. Last Tuesday, in fact, Lady Cheek asked if this meant that we’d be able to go to Trivia Night again.
“But of course, my love,” I replied.
Now, it seems, the parade of relatives, well-wishers and holiday travellers have left their mark on our post-Yuletide bliss. Some bugger gave her his cold, and the ol’ ball and chain’s sitting at home with the blankets pulled up to her chin, hacking up a lung. I don’t know at this point whether she’ll be able to make it, and if not, whether I’ll have to play nursemaid for the 4th night in a row.
So right now, we’re down as a definite maybe. Sorry.
E. Thorp: I’ll probably get there around 7:00, depending on traffic and how long it takes me to pick up new books at the library. inkysplotchy may be there earlier, but I haven’t heard from him yet.
Aguecheek: Dote on the infected all you need to. Colds are miserable.
I’m in. Planning to arrive around 7pm or a little before so I can have some dinner beforehand. Mmm, greasy pub food and beer: a food group all its own…
Out of curiousity, what time does the party usually break up? I’m down in Seattle on Tuesday nights for choir practice, but I suspect you’d all be on your way home by the time I could make it over from downtown.
Jodi: The game starts at 8pm (or a few minutes after) and has generally been running ninety minutes to two hours. If we’re expecting you, some or all of us could hang out if we finish early.
Depending on who’s reading the questions, it can go over 2 hours with little difficulty, especially once you include the final tally and reading of the answers. Stop by, Jodi, if you’re so inclined and you’re out of choir early enough. Nothing like a pub full of ciggy smoke to cleanse the lungs.
Also, inkysplotchy will be there, probably on the early side (6:30 or so).
Looks as though I’ll have my car back, so I’ll be there.
Aguecheek, like the rest (?) of us, has been unable to access the boards for most of today, but leaned in from the next cubicle over to tell me he can’t make it.
Update: OK, so I won’t have my car back after all (long story). With other errands to run tonight I won’t have time to rely on Metro, so I will send my regrets this week and hope to see you next.
I may end up moving to Seattle next month. If I do I’d love to be in on this since I’ll be needing to make friends. I’ll keep you posted on if that’s where I’m ending up when I know more.
Sorry if there are similar posts to this in the other thread. I tried replying to that thread yesterday, repeatedly, but that’s when the board kept going down so I don’t know if the messages posted or not. I’m guessing not.
acrossthesea: We’ll be happy to have you. Be warned: our newbie hazing ritual is tough, but fair. But once you’re in…
Last night was long – Cindy read the questions, and we got done about 10:40 – and we did okay without winning. Not bad for a three-man team, but I look forward to being back at full force, or even having enough people there to field two teams.
We named ourselves Waiting for Jodi in Jodi’s honor.
It was good to get back in the swing of things, even if we couldn’t name Jupiter as the planet with the shortest day.
Next week should be the brusque and loud English guy with a penchant for geography questions, so it’ll go faster.
Crap, I had a long message and the hamsters ate it.
Anyway, last night was fun. We needed a couple more brains to put us over the top (winners got 25 out of 40 right; we had 20 or 21 depending on whether we got credit for a fuzzy answer). We needed somebody to talk us out of second-guessing ourselves on “pup vs. kit” for baby beavers.
Oh, and I also looked up the “da Vinci invented scissors” item, and even though our wild guess got us a point, it’s probably apocryphal. <shrug>
My intention is to attend but it’s my turn for an evening job here at the office (biweekly payroll transmittal). Usually it’s done by 7pm but occasionally things go sideways and it stretches out some.
