I was just wondering, if there are any Vegas Dopers, maybe we could have a Vegas Dopefest. Apparently there was one in October, and I missed it

I live in FL, but I’ll be in Vegas May 10-14 for a convention…on rollerskating. I love telling my job I’ll be missing a week’s work for rollerskating. HA!
There was one in October? I thought that was cancelled, or at least that is what they told me…hmmm.
Talk about being unpopular…geez. But there was one two years ago in October that was pretty good. I was only able to make it on the first night for a short time.
Count me in if you decide to have one this year…last time we all hooked up at Mandalay Bay lounge area for the first night…and then things took off from there.
Best approach is to simply pick a weekend and throw the date out there (making sure it isn’t the same weekend as some huge conference here in Las Vegas, causing rooms to be booked up and even more overpriced than usual).
Then see how many can make it that weekend and go from there.
I did a search and found threads about previous Las Vegas dopefests, the one in '02 and one was planned for Oct '03, but it may have been cancelled :smack: … I didn’t see any info about it being cancelled :o
Yes, DMark, it would be a good idea not to have it around a big convention/holiday time if people from out of town were to come. Since there are probably only like 4 people on the boards from Vegas, it would be a very small fest if only locals came

I used to live in the pointy part, but now reside at the wide angle. I’d think about coming if it didn’t cock-up an F1 weekend.

Google “Las Vegas Convention Calendar” and you can pretty much see what is coming. This is also a great idea for other Dopers thinking of visiting our fair city, as the flight and room rates sink when there are no big conventions in town, or it is not a holiday weekend. If you are flexible with your travel plans, Las Vegas can still be a cheap fun place to go.
July looks slow…wonder if it has anything to do with our 124 degree weather (ya wimps)…you know, it is a dry heat and we do have airconditioning here.
But look through the schedule (with some very odd conventions indeed) and see what dates look good to those who have to travel from afar.
I’m interested in the idea of a Vegas dopefest. A few questions, if I may.
Do we want to try to book a block of rooms, or all get separate hotels?
What activities do people want to do in Vegas? If there’s 50 people in attendance, who can accommodate us?
How will people get from the airport to various destinations? (Transportation around the Strip area looked rather okay in Vegas the one time I was there.)
If we go in the summer, rooms should be cheaper (the second weekends in July and August look to have very few conventions), but will people go to Vegas in the summer? (I’d go there just to get out of the heat, but most others don’t live in places that are hotter than Vegas.)
Do we need 4-6 months to plan?
Sounds like a good thing, what ideas are available at this point?

But I typically lurk, so I’ll be over in the corner a twhatever dopefest not making eye contact.
Once a date has been set, every hotel in town is more than happy to set up a bunch of rooms at a discounted rate…the more rooms, the more the discount.
What to do in Las Vegas? Seriously…you think that is going to be a problem? Last Las Vegas Dopefest, they basically had a few meeting points and times, and the rest of the time people went off and did what tourists do…everything from rock climbing at Red Rock, riding roller coasters, cruising the Strip, gambling, seeing shows, eating, etc. Drinking together in bars seemed to be rather popular with the Dopers in attendance.
Transportation from the airport is free…just hop on a shuttle to your hotel. Some like to rent a car, and a taxi doesn’t cost all that much, especially if you share a ride with other Dopers. And it won’t help in airport transportation, but that new monorail should be up and running by Summer, so that should make the Strip tours a lot easier and cheaper.
The heat? Well…again, the trick is to settle on a date. I suggested July simply because no one ever comes here in July/August and the room rates are usually super cheap! And that means flights are super cheap because fewer people are coming. But I understand the heat turns some people off, so I will leave the date question up to those who have to travel here. For those of us who live here, it doesn’t matter an iota.
Oh, and maybe it might be a good idea to start a new thread titled: “Las Vegas Dopefest 2004”. Right now, the thread title looks like someone is asking where the cheapest buffet is in Vegas.

I thought I would see if there were enough people to support some sort of LasVegas Dopefest… but then again, how many people pass up an opportunity to come to Vegas.

Actually, your thread title is perfect to get us locals together, which is still a good idea…then we could think about a larger LVDopefest plan, if any.

Suggestions on time and place?
If locals want to get together, how about getting together for food and drinks on a Friday or Saturday evening sometime soon?
Itallian food? Irish food? Mexican food? American fare? whatever… DMark… anyplace that you have that is a favorite??

There seems to be a PT’s on every corner in Las Vegas and they aren’t bad…simple, cheap fare, can sit at the tables and eat or just sit over by the bar for drinks…in my part of town there are two on Silverado Ranch Blvd. One is close to Eastern, the other close to Las Vegas Boulevard.
What part of town do you guys live in…might as well try to find one that is fairly central so nobody has to schlep around the beltway.
Of course, we could also just pick a locals casino and meet at one of the bars there…Green Valley Ranch is in my area, but again…I don’t want to make anyone feel like they have to pack a lunch for the drive to get there.
How about next Saturday, May 8? I like 9pm, but am open there as well.
Pt’s is good. Anyone have any interest on a Friday after work or is Saturday your after work day?
