2009 Vegas DopeFest Preliminary Thread

As though anyone in Vegas needs an(other) excuse for a party, glee will be visiting once again this year, and has requested a DopeFest so he can renew acquaintances with those who were here the last time and meet anyone else who can come.

We have two possible weekends available, and if you have a preference for either one, please indicate it in this thread.

(1) July 3-5. It’s a holiday weekend for a lot of us in the States, and this year Vegas seems to be (at least so far) at lower occupancy rates than normal, so finding a hotel room at a reasonable price may not be the nightmare that it normally would be that weekend. One event for this weekend could be attending a Las Vegas 51s baseball game with fireworks afterward.

(2) July 10-12. The weekend after.

Please reply with a date preference, whether you’d be interested in attending the baseball game, and any other thoughts/ideas/questions/snarky comments.

Viva Las Vegas!

July 10-12 is better for us. I’d rather be home on the 4th to calm the animals. Baseball would be good, if the team has decided on a new name by then.

I want to play! I work on the strip, so I might be able to get a discounted hotel rate for some out of towners if they’re interested.

ETA: I don’t have a preference, but I’d like to see a game. Is Glee even interested in baseball though?

Who cares? It’s a Great American Tradition. Besides, he needs to see what real sports are like.

Darn it, I’ve already booked my Vegas Vacation for May 10-14.

So?

Very. He can even sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Let’s toss this one back to the front page, just so the punters will see it.

VegasDope! I’m there!

The long weekend sounds like a good idea. Heck, a long weekend in Vegas is always a good idea. Count me in for whichever weekend has better weather in the Midwest. (shudders from memories of arriving in Vegas 10 hours late due to a storm front)

ETA: Southwest can put me on a nonstop from Dulles to Vegas for about $200 each way. That’s better than going via Chicago.

I’m in.
The second weekend, for me, would be better.

hmm, if I can swing it how do you feel about a crasher from the southeast? I love Vegas.

kurilla, count me in.
Am a bit busy with classes and a new assignment, but will try to help out best I can this year!

However, regarding the baseball game:
You know that stereotype about some Gay men hating professional sports?
Sometimes stereotypes are correct.
I would rather watch paint dry.

However, as the event nears and if you need someone to research discount tickets for a show on the Strip, I’m your guy! There are currently some GREAT deals on discount tickets to some pretty good shows…locals have to buy them, but I am sure we can get enough of us here to pick up tickets for everyone!

Keep us posted!

I’m in, and either weekend is fine with me. I’m always up for baseball.

Posting here to put this on my radar…not sure about committing at this point in time.

Discount shows, eh? You have my interest. I reaaaaaally want to see Terry Fator when I come this year. I bet his show is too new for discounts though. What shows have you seen good prices for?

Once again, would any other out-of-towners be interested in getting a hotel suite? I had good success with a suite next door to Orleans in '07.

If it’s the second weekend, then I’d be interested. And ShelliBean, I can tell you from experience that if the Vegas crew minds out-of-staters crashing, they don’t show it in the least. That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it in order to invite myself, yet again. Thanks, guys. Your hospitality rocks.

The first (and only!) time I saw the 51’ers, they scored 6 home runs in a single innings.
Don’t underestimate the power of US culture either. Although I’ve only seen one live game, I know about baseball from:

  • late night UK TV (plus American football and basketball)
  • Robert Parker’s Spenser series (regularly mentions Boston Red Sox / Sandy Koufax / Roger Clemens etc)
  • ‘Brewster’s millions’ and ‘The Naked Gun’
  • Meatloaf’s ‘Paradise by the dashboard light’

Yes, but not very well. :o
I did enjoy doing the Mexican Wave though.

You’re practically there compared to me!

Most kind.
I’d be interested in:

  • Criss Angel (plus Penn and Teller, even though I’ve seen them last time)
  • Cirque du Soleil (also well worth repeat viewing)
  • Terry Fator (we get ‘America’s got Talent’ over here!)

What else can you recommend?

We were in Vegas last month and went to see Criss Angel’s show. To be perfectly honest, it was shite.
