2009 Vegas DopeFest Preliminary Thread

I’ll admit the plan doesn’t come together nearly as flawlessly as it does when the thoughts are soaked in bourbon. But hey, I’ll mark my calendar anyway.

Ah.
Well I thought his TV shows were good, but some magicians don’t present so well to a large audience.

Glee - the “Believe” show is nothing like the stuff he does on “Mindfreak” (which to my eyes makes him look like a poor man’s David Blaine) and the show we saw was little more than basic “pulling doves out of my sleeves” stuff.

Posting a quick update –

Eveyone who has expressed a preference has preffered the 10-12 weekend, so I shall wave my magic dice and spin the magic roulette wheel and make it so.

Unfortunately the 51s are playing away that weekend (Reno, I believe), so no chance for Dopers to get on the marquee when the announcer names all the “groups” that are in attendance that night.

So, doing some very ROUGH planning –

Friday night drinks and show worked well last time. If we can get discounts to a show this time, that would be great to repeat, I think.

I’ve checked with tpkurilla, and he’s agreed to host a Saturday evening barbecue at our place. We don’t have a pool, unlike DMark, but we do have a nice large patio with fans (which we’ll need, given it’s July in Vegas).

As it gets closer to time, we’ll figure out something to do on Saturday afternoon – perhaps a matinee movie, matinee show, or something completely different.

So mark your calendars, and we’ll see you in July!

I’m in for all of it!

  • I hope your dogs are well and look forward to seeing them.
  • when you have a barbecue over here, you have to worry about rain. I guess your barbecue is safe!

Thanks (in advance) for hosting, kurilla! Any chance of breaking out something from your Bookcase of Supreme Ubergamerdom?

I can’t plan so far in advance, but I’d love to barge in and say hello! I’ll mark this thread and stop back by from time to time to see how everything is coming.

If there’s interest in gaming, I’ve no doubt tpkurilla can pull something out. We have a large enough space, we might even be able to get – gasp – TWO games going at once.

I call partners with Glee for Bughouse.

I booked my tickets on Southwest this morning, after triple-checking the dates. See you all in Vegas!

Bump

One month to the DopeFest. Are there any updates? Anybody who spent four months wondering if they ought to attend? (And if you were doing so, please join us!)

Thirty days out, and a brief update:

DMark and I are inquiring for discounts for a show Friday night. We’ll let you know which show (and as a result, where the meet and greet will be Friday night) as soon as we have that information, probably next week.

For Saturday, it’s going to be a challenge to pick an activity or two that will appeal to lots of people, so we’re keeping it fairly casual with a tour of Ethel’s Chocolate Factory. Admission is free, and … well, it’s chocolate, right? If you’re interested in attending, please let me know, as they offer special guided tours for groups of ten or more.

One possible alternative is also FlyAway, a chance to experience indoor skydiving. It’s somewhat expensive (though there are coupons available), and there are weight limits. See this link for info.

A final option for Saturday afternoon is board or role-playing games at my house. Tpkurilla and I have an insanely large collection of both types (as **Scuba Ben **and Glee can attest), and we’re happy to open them up for fellow Dopers’ pleasure while you’re here. We have enough room for two or three groups to play, so if you’re a die-hard gamer, you can come over at 2:00.

The actual barbecue Saturday evening will start about 6:00 and run until around 9:00 or so. We’ll have burgers will all the fixings as a base. If anyone has special requests (i.e., kosher, vegetarian, or allergies), please let me know by PM if I don’t already know about it.

Last year’s Sunday brunch at the Palms worked well, so I thought we’d repeat it. We’ll meet at the Palms Buffet at 10:30 Sunday.

Now for the technical part of the post:

The hotel that’s closest to our house is the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites at 6220 South Rainbow Blvd. When I checked room availability for Dopefest weekend online, it looked like they have good availability at around $99 per night.

Dopemobile service (i.e., transportation, for anyone flying in from out of town) can be arranged to our house Saturday or to other events if needed.

Please PM me with an email address I can use to send you our address and directions and any specific updates, and so that I know how many are interested in which activities for discount-arranging purposes.

Looking forward to seeing y’all next month!

It’s funny because I’ll actually be in Vegas at around that time. I think I’ll miss it by a day or so. But my question is: what’s all this about magic shows and pony rides? Don’t nobody gamble?

We’re still good to go. We’ll be at Caesars, so I’ll send you a PM for the addy, and MapQuest the rest. We’re in for the BBQ at the very least. I’ll even bring some single malt to tease the pallattes of discerning Dopers.

This sounds like a fun thing to do. I’ll even make the long trip from Henderson!

I have visited Cadbury’s World of Chocolate in England. The subject interests me.

I’d love to do this, but am dangerously close to the weight limit. (See previous comment!)

I can attest that the Kurilla’s roleplaying collection is the best I have ever seen.

The bearded chap with glasses and the English accent at the Luxor poker tables will be me!
I’ve visited Vegas the last 2 years, have won one tournament and am about $53 up.

I’m in. Presently I have weekends off so I should be able to make most of the events.

I’d love to do FlyAway again. Note, stretch well before trying this.

Researching deals and one place for you out-of-towners to check out is:
Stay And Play Here which is a relatively new website trying to get locals to stay in Las Vegas for their vacations and offering “locals” specials.

I am sure there are enough locals here who could step up and get those deals for you. Check out the listings and see what might interest you and let us know.

Are there enough people coming from out of town to organize a hotel room / suite?

I am definitely interested in the Chocolate World tour.
