Survivor 5/9 - Finale and Reunion

I saw a preview for the show on DVR this morning (while watching Joan of Arcadia). One brief sequence of frames showed two shadowy figures perched atop a rock at some distance away. There were only a couple of frames before the whole scene was obscured by a giant logo. I paused it and analyzed it.

The two figures, in silouette, are sitting very close together, so they cannot be Rob and Rupert. I don’t think Rob would sit that close to Rupert. It could be two women, since women are usually less anal than men about casual intimacy, but the figure on the left has a strikingly masculine pose. Its left arm is lifted and its legs are spread in the manner of a frat boy shouting “whoopie!”. I believe therefore that the left figure is a male. I do not believe that if the left figure were Rupert that the right figure would be either Amber or Jenna because there is something vaguely romantic about the two figures sitting atop a rock side by side, touching or almost touching. I don’t think that that sort of dynamic would occur between Rupert and either of the girls. Therefore, I believe that the left figure is Rob. Now, Rob is something of a flirt and opportunist, so it is possible that he would be willing to sit just as close to Jenna as he would to Amber, but the figure on the right is sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest, and her arms wrapped around her legs. As best I can recall, this is a signature sitting posture for Amber. And it does make sense that Rob and Amber would go out and sit on a rock together, with him showing off and her nestled against him. It is possible that these two figures are not the final two, except that it seemed to be a supremely isolated place. There was no camp around the fairly wide-angled shot, and it is traditional that the final two take a memory walk that leads them far away from camp. Therefore, assuming that this brief flash of a scene is not a red herring, my prediction is that Rob and Amber are the final two.

This seems like as good a place as any to gripe about the promos which emphasize that there are only four left “The Rob-father, beautiful Amber, Single Mom Jenna and Rupert the gentle giant”. Three of the four are described in ways which have at least SOME relation to how they’ve played the game, and one is described by an attribute that should only matter OUT of the game. Why not Motor-mouth Jenna or something else that relates to the game? Sure, Amber may be beautiful out of the game, and Rupert a gentle giant out of the game, but those attributes are inextricably linked to their in-game “personas”.

It’s silly, but it bugs me.

I appreciate the spoiler box. Although its contents can only be speculation at this point, I would rather not read it. I’d like to remind East Coast Dopers that when Survivor has ended at nine o’clock, we on the Left Coast will not be viewing the show for another two hours.

Thanks for thinking of us, Easties!

I was just checking the survivor site and noticed that people still love Rupert. Considering most of the threads around here have had support for him going steadily downhill ever since the middle of Pearl Islands, it was a bit of a surprise. I’m personally still hoping he’ll win, and think he put himself in a good position to do it.

I think I can safely say, with zero hyperbole, that if that overgrown, passive-agressive, whining, entitlement-baby wins, it will be several seasons before I can even stomach the notion of watching Survivor again. :shudder:

I don’t think Rupert will win…

based on something he may have let slip at the last reunion show.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I thought Rupert was rather petulant when he was booted from the Pearl Islands. It did not reflect well upon him. On the other hand, from what he said, it seems like he really needs a financial break. The good news is that he is likely to gain some gigs (and income) from his appearances on Survivor. (Hunter Ellis got his own show.)

What was it he said? (You can spoiler it if you like.)

This has been irritating the hell out of me too. Single Mom? What the hell does that have to do with anything?!?

It should be “Construction Worker Rob, Grown-up Sorority Bimbo Amber, Single Mom Jenna, and Former Gravedigger Rupert (who stole Jerry Garcia’s shirt).” [all based on their real lives]

OR

It should be “The Rob-father, beautiful Amber, Whiny Jenna, and Rupert the gentle giant.” [all based on the game]

BTW Libertarian, here’s what you were wondering (from an earlier post by rockle):

Filming of S:AS finished about 2 weeks before the S:PI reunion show. There was a big brouhaha about Rupert’s comment that he knew he “could beat that Richard Hatch” during the reunion show (I think Jeff even had to say something about not giving anything away), and Rupert was unavailable for chat and Early Show appearances after his PI episode aired, because he was filming.

But couldn’t that just be about Hatch leaving so early, rather than about winning the game?

Someone in the last Survivor thread opined that the “surprise” would be Rob proposing to Amber on the reunion show. I’ll pitch that in here as a wild guess, based on nothing much, really. Except (I swear to God this is true) I had a dream a few weeks ago, right after Rob’s “I get the million and the girl” comment, that he did exactly this. Although, in the dream, I was Jeff “Pretty boy” Probst*; and since I’m unlikely to become him any time soon, I doubt the dream was prohetic. But a proposal would neatly wrap up the season, no?

[sub][sup]*Dialogue:
Jeff: Boston Rob! I think you had something you wanted to say?
Rob: Yeah I did, Jeff. [gets down on one knee] Ambuh, on account of youse the prettiest gurl in the world, I cahn’t think of anyone I’d rahthuh spend a million with. Ambuh, will you marry me?[/sup][/sub]

Is the “Big Surprise” supposed to be during the final show, or during the Reunion?

Actually, it won’t end till 10:00, and then the Reunion part comes on, right?

And it’s my understanding that once the show (or any show, for that matter) has aired, it’s fair game and no spoiler boxes are necessary, right? Maybe we can get a mod in for an official ruling? I’m not trying to be a smartass or anything, it’s just that I was under the impression that once a show aired here in the East, it was considered open for discussion without spoiler boxes.

From the sticky (bolding mine):

Those of us on the West Coast (or Hawaii) will not have experienced the program until after it has been aired on the East Coast, so we will be “experiencing it anew”.

With all due respect, and as a fellow West-Coaster, the ruling about remembering that we are several hours behind the East Coast regards putting spoiler information in the thread title, because doing so would make it impossible for us to even read the entire forum without fear of being spoiled. Anyone on the West Coast who opens a thread about an active television show after it’s aired in one time zone but before airing in theirs does so at their own risk. I don’t see why our failure to avoid opening the thread after 7:00PM PDT, knowing full well that Eastcoasters will want to be talking about the ending, should be on their shoulders to protect us from our own curiosity. Between the hours of 7:00PM and 9:00PM, count on the fact that those who’ve seen the show will be discussing it and Don’t Come In. At least that’s my take, anyway.

I debated putting that paragraph in, but decided to because it specifically mentioned the time zone issue. The important part of what I pasted was the part about spoiling something for those who might be experiencing it anew.

Of course the Right Coasters can talk about the ending. All I’m asking is that they use spoiler boxes for those of us who might come into the forum. I’ve been reading thread, and didn’t realise what time it was. It sure sucks when you’ve lost track of time and suddenly see an unprotected spoiler.

Damn, Libertarian. Guess MY Survivor finale thread wasn’t good enough for you.

I’ll leave my spoiler speculation up on that one. No need to duplicate for the sake.

Damn, Chastain, Lib started it what 13 hours before you?

Ironically, she is no longer a single mom!

Here’s hoping that whiny/dopey Rupert doesn’t win and saying that “he needs the money”…who gives a F***. That in my book isn’t a reason to win. The best player of the game should win and that my friends ain’t Rupert.

My speculation is…Rupert fourth player out (booted first), then Jenna booted and then I think Rob is second and Amber wins, but the last two picks could be flip-flopped. But what does it matter if they get married, then they get to share the money and the cars. Question: If Romber does get married, will that be a violation of the game rule about not being able to the share the money?

Finally while I do think spoiler boxes are appropriate, WHY on earth if you live on the Left Coast would you even think about reading this Survivor thread before the telecast has ended in your area? I mean when I read thread topics about movies that I’ve not seen, but want to see, I NEVER EVER read those threads. I call that self-control.

Could someone summarize the first hour and 15 minutes of the finale for me? I missed it - turned on the tv to see the final person being voted out. What were the last two immunity challenges, who won them, what if any strategy was involved in the voting?

Oh, and maybe stick it in a spoiler box for the impulse-control-deficient folk from the left coast.
