1010011010 — a question, please...

This isn't a rant, so if a mod wants to move it, fine. The only reason I chose the Pit is that I think I recall such member to member discussions happening here over the course of five years, and because I didn't want to risk ruining Czar's thread with this tangent. So, I'm not calling you out or anything, but just want you to clarify.

In this post, you identified yourself as an "apatheist", saying that you "find questions of gods' existance irrelevant and uninteresting". Why, then, did you choose a user name that carries such obvious religious significance and baggage?

666 in binary. Maybe he chose it because he thought it was cool, rather than for any religous reasons?

Yeah, that had crossed my mind, but "cool" just didn't seem to go with "irrelevant and uninteresting". I'm hoping that maybe there's a story behind it.

My GOD! (no pun intended)

15,590 posts under your belt and it's the first time I notice you?!?!.

That either must be close to a record, or my memory is failing me... again .

Sigh.

Sorry about that. As usual, I don't have anything significant to add to the thread so please carry on.

(And yes, you haven't noticed me either. So, we're even)

1010011010 is a joke from Futurama, from the episode The Honking, I believe. That's what I thought of immediately when I saw his name. Could be wrong though.

The existance of gods is irrelevant and uninteresting.

The existance of religion is relevant and interesting.

Why 1010011010 specifically, though? Meh, it looks nice.

So, do you have a position? (are you an atheist?) Or are you just trying to sound 'deep'?

Imagined consequences in an imagined universe are just as effective as real consequences in a real universe.

I'm less interested in what people believe, than in why they believe it.

I suppose I'd decribe myself as a hard agnostic and a soft atheist.

quote from 1010011010's link - "Belief that only I myself and my own experiences are real, while anything else—a physical object or another person—is nothing more than an object of my consciousness."

So are you citing this as your belief or questioning how/why someone else can believe this?

Solipsism is mental masturbation. I'd disagree with the quote you've chosen, though. You experience yourself as a physical object, and even this experience can be called to question. You can know nothing about your existance other than that you, whatever you happen to be, exists. Ye olde Brain-in-a-Tank scenario. However, if you imagine you'll fall off a building and go splat, this is an effective deterrent to jumping off buildings... even if you won't really be falling or splatting- merely imagining it. As far as decision making is concerned, the objective or subjective nature of reality is irrelevant. It's not terribly useful to live your life with the gnawing suspicion that it's all a delusion, but it can be instructive in understanding the decision making of those that believe in things you consider imaginary.

"Well, if there's no god, what's to stop me from murdering a bunch of people just because I don't like them?" or "I was an atheist, but after all the drug use and fornication destroyed my life, I came back to jesus." I think humanity would benefit from getting rid of religion, but not if most people can't internalize that there are rational bases for behaving "morally".

Only on the SDMB could there be a thread about religion, metaphysics, tattoos, and binary humor. I'm of two minds about the binary humor, however.

Hey, it wasn't my choice. It came from your cite. I like the mental masturbation idea though. How's that work exactly? Kinda like havin' a wet dream, huh?
You impress yourself so much that you don't need anyone else to exist. I guess that's cool for some folks. Especially those who couldn't get laid anyway.

I found it a lot easier to just define God in a way that I can comprehend. Not an omnipotent being that interferes in our everyday lives. Definitely NOT the God of my ancestors. After several years of studying many philosophies I've decided in the end, it really doesn't make a fuck what you believe. Whatever the truth is, IS the truth and we'll never know WTF that is while we are alive. If ever!
However, my idea of the truth is just that. It is one I can live with, it works for me (most of the time) and I really don't give a shit who likes it or not. Sorry to be so blunt...1010011010 got it right from memory

Quote:
"Well, if there's no god, what's to stop me from murdering a bunch of people just because I don't like them?"
First of all, what stops most people is the idea of prison. It doesn't stop all of them obviously. BTW I believe that more deaths have probably been caused due to religious beliefs than not.
Morals is something taught by your parents not religion (IMHO of course).
I mean, just what morals are the worlds religions teaching us. To hate and/or kill those not like ourselves. Abortion is murder and it's okay to kill those who perform them. Suicide bombings are a blessed event. War is acceptable as long as GOD is on our side. Gays are an abomination to God and deserve death. I'm not sure I like the morals that the world's religions seem to be teaching...

Sorry Lib didn't mean to hijack your thread here. I'm gonna go now. See ya 'round 666.

Might be that it doesn't like external deep-linking...
This should work, though it's not actual size.

It really does just boil down to 1010011010 looking nicer than 1100001001. I've used both various places, and people seem to make fewer assumptions about 666 than 777... which would explain why I've maintained 1010011010 over the years. Way back when, anothe time, another place, I was given the byline The Devil's Advocate- for good reason.

I could tell you the epic saga of Booty the Unfriendly Chocolate Ghost and how he freed the imprisoned spirit Zaeboola (The Unemployed Phantasm) from the hot water piping feeding the tub at Cafe Elliston when he was trying to clean the spilled coffee from his goat hide pants (the nice kind with the pockets). I could further tell you how Zaebools bestowed upon Booty the Chocolatte Touch, which goes terribly awry, leads to his untimely cocoa demise, and requires enlisting the skills of JuanCompos (Dealer of Fine Cheese Apparel)... and then throw in some crap about how it was the number Black Limestone (Dolemite's Evil Twin) used for his beeper... but that's just embarassing, happened more than 10 years ago, and has been erased from the face of the intarwheb since 1997.

GeoCities don't allow remote linking - you need to right click on the link, copy the link address and paste it into a new browser window, then the image should show up.

The first time I saw this was my first day as a computer tech. It was on the office door of one of the other techs and after introducing myself I said "I like the sign on your door."

To which he gave me a weird look and replied, "Which one?"

Well, there was only one sign on his door, but regardless I pointed at it and said "There are two types of people on the world..."

He gave me this look like he really, really had to take a dump and said "It says ten types of people..."

I never got along with that guy. He blasted Christian rock music all day and then later got fired for missing work too much because he kept landing in jail after beating his wife.

leenmi,
I was wondering the same thing.

Here's a thought experiment for you, though. Webcam images change periodically, this is what they do. Suppose I changed the picture to something less appropriate for this forum. Desmostylus's post would be providing a direct link to content that's against the SDMB rules. Does he get banned, or do I? Do I now have to regulate what images I put up for my webcam because Desmostylus direct linked to it?
