"The Ship" full game trial weekend

I’ve been interested in trying this game, and I know a few others have. I guess steam is offering free play of the full game from thursday till sunday this week. Just check the news to load it up.

Didn’t notice the handy link at first with the news announcement:

Howdy Senor, I bought this a while ago just after it came out and I’ve found it to be a pretty fun little diversion. Definitely easy to get into casually and much less of a time commitment than a game of Battlefield or even CS:S.

I put a post about it here way back when, explaining the gameplay and what makes it good IMHO.

Neat. I’m d/l it. Thanks for the heads-up!

Good, I’ve been wanting to try this game. Anybody know how big it is?

The “disk usage” thing in steam says 193mb… but you’ll probably need the source engine components if you don’t have them already.

Hmm. I preloaded it, but when I click on “Launch Game” it closes without actually doing anything. Anyone else having this problem?

(I don’t think it’s a regional time thing; it had a countdown to when it starts, which is now at 00:00:00.)

Well I’ve found that being dropped back to the Desktop in a game is often a symptom of overheating, although it’s unlikely if you’re just launching the game.

Might be a corrupted install of some sort. It’d be a big pain in the ass, but reinstalling (redownloading) would probably solve the problem.

I deleted it…and now I can’t see where to download it from again. :smack: And I was really starting to like Steam, as well.

I had the same problem, restarted steam, and it worked.

Do you guys want to try to have a server together? The game isn’t very bandwidth intensive, I could try hosting one. I have 1 Mbit up, and a good overall system. Since there’s not a lot of shooting and stuff, it may work pretty well. I was playing on a server earlier and it was clear it was being run in a non-dedicated mode but worked pretty well.

N’er mind, restarted, seems to be ok. Ta, Senor!

Open it up, go to the store tab, then you should see the ship free trial.

Ah, the miracle of cross-posting.

I’m going to start a server, “SDMB Killfest” if anyone wants to play together. Just sort servers by name, and then go down to S to find it.

Or, at least I will be, if this “steam ticket not authenticated” error goes away. I’ll keep trying. Keep an eye out for it.

Fixed it. “SDMB Killfest!” is open for business.

I’ll hop on later tonight (8pm+ PDT).

I opened it to the public, figuring we only had 3-4 people to play maybe. And it filled up surprisingly fast. Anyway, name yourself [SDMB]something in order to tell who’s who. If it’s full, just use the auto-retry feature.

Ok, to try to set an organized time we can all get together, I’ll open up a password-protected SDMB server, name “SDMB Killfest”, password “cecil” at 6:30p/9:30e

A quick tip to all:

You don’t win games by killing a ton of people (this ain’t Counter-Strike, homey). You win it by netting the most money. Always check the Money For Kill (MFK) value of an item before you decide to murder with it.

In other words, you’ll quickly realize that the very deadly, and extremely ubiquitous, fire axes on just about every wall of the ship are utterly useless (except for self defense).

The more an item is used, the less kills with it are worth. The axe quickly gets down to like $100 per kill, whereas another average weapon would be between $3000-9000. This is a fundamental part of the game it helps you figure out early on.

Unless you just like hacking people…
