Well, we can't popularize the term if only 100 Dopers read this thread.
Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

I actually prefer Gaudere's Law. Like Murphy's law. But, either one seems apropriate.

It's not a law yet, right now.... (cue music)
It's just a bill, yeah it's only a bill
and it's sitting here on capital hill...

I just realized something:

That "I'm Just a Bill" song is anti-libertarian. Because a couple of times in the song, we hear the Bill singing:

"Will the nation let me be a law?
How I hope and pray that they will..."

And they make the voting down of a bill into something horrible, by likening the term "die in committee" to the actual death of a cute singing rolled-up piece of paper.

And if that isn't enough, it's a clear breach of States' Rights, too. The text of the bill was, "School busses must stop at railroad crossings," which is clearly a State and Local issue, yet it was being voted on by Congress! Doesn't Schoolhouse Rock have any sense of the Separation of Powers?! Gah!

I also like the sound of Gaudere's Law. ("a typo will derail your otherwise excellent argument" or something like that)
It could be a Gauderism, but that doesn't sound moderator-friendly.

Yeah, "Gauderism" makes it sound like it's something *I* usually do, which I don't. I do make typos on occaision, but they're not usually that bad. Hm, what should the actual text of Gaudere's Law be? Maybe, "When posting to nitpick another poster's grammar, word usage or typing abilities, your post will invariably contain one of those errors as well."

Hmm. I think it flows better as:

"Any post made to point out a spelling or grammar error will invariably contain a spelling or grammar error."

All right, this is more like it.

Gaudere's Law: Any post made to point out a spelling or grammar error will invariably contain a spelling or grammar error.

Although I think that "invariably" doesn't sound quite as fitting as "inevitably", that is really just quibbling.
Thanks for the replies everyone.

I've been singing this song since I was a kid, and I know that's not right...

"I'm just a bill
Yes I'm only a bill,
And I got as far as Capitol Hill.
Well, now I'm stuck in committee
And I'll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss and debate
Whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will,
But today I am still just a bill."

Incidentally, I think there should be some sort of rider on this law that notes that anybody who tries to correct another user's grammar, and spells it "grammer," ought to be shot on the spot.

Gaudere Law - yeah, I'll accept that.

David B's ultimate solution - nah, I'm not into capital punishment. Can't we just bannich them?

Not to mention the blatant violation of Separation of Church and State in line 2....
