I’m sitting here at work in San Diego and my chair started swaying from side to side. Lasted about 10 seconds. No damage. Anyone else feel it?
Whoa. That was big one. Things were shaking good here in Santa Monica.
Someone in the office just said 5.8, epicenter south of Pomona.
Here’s the link to the USGS quake page. Preliminary magnitude of 5.8.
Dammit, I was hoping to be first. It was a really rolly one. The office phones are down for the moment.
Everybody okay?
Damn, and CNN already sent me a text message about this too. Hope everything’s alright in Calli.
Chino Hills, 5.8…10 seconds of gradual rolling that followed a quick snap. OK here in the high desert.
HOLY MOLY that was ROLLY!
Felt it from West L.A. (the person I was on the phone with) all the way down to Redondo Beach. Wowza.
Yes is was very rolly! Made me kinda seasick for a moment.
I was outside the building, and didn’t feel a thing. Huh, weird.
For those who felt the quake you can report your experiences to the USGS here.
Kind of Jiggly here 20 miles N of San Diego, with a gentle roly-poly movement for about 5 seconds and then a little side-to side following.
My sister standing next to me says, “What earthquake?”
USGS just downgraded the quake to a 5.6.
Damn – the economy’s so bad, even earthquakes are getting downsized.
Biggest one I’ve felt in a while. (South of Irvine, California is where I am right now.) And long-lasting - about 10 seconds I’d say. Gave us a good scare in the office.
My post from my thread:
This one seems to be winning, btw. Would somebody report the other to a mod and request closing on my behalf, please?
Earthquake in Orange County
Two minutes ago (approximately 11:43 a.m.).
This was Michaela’s first major quake. She was in the shower washing her hair at the time, and it scared her right out of the bathroom.
It lasted for about twenty seconds, and knocked a coffee mug off a hook in our kitchen. The coffee mug is a total loss (not much of one, as we have more than we know what to do with, we never used it, and it wasn’t one of our favorites).
Also lost is Michaela’s sense that Earth is an actual habitable planet.
How did other SoCal Dopers weather the thing?
ETA: it still seems to be a bit early to obtain strength and epicenter levels.
ETA: again. Its epicenter was in SW Chino Hills, and the magnitude is given as 5.8. Pretty respectable.
ETA AGAIN! Down to 5.6? Still not little.
And only 10 seconds? Well, I guess time dilates a little in the presence of a screaming twelve-year old.
Felt in here in Rancho Bernardo, boyfriend didn’t feel it all out by Miramar.
Felt it in the San fernando valley, The building where i work was built after the 94 quake so it just rolled around on its suspension.
Arnold Winkelried, when did you turn in your jackboots?
Aw, I miss out on everything! All we have are a couple stupid volcanoes and they don’t even erupt!
Here’s a discussion on it now and the USGS link. CNN’s got live reports too.
Will Michaela remember this later, is she old enough? I’d love to have experienced something like this as a child. Maybe you’ve got a future Seismologist there!
Scared the crap outta me. I have no dial tone on my landline but I can make and receive calls on it, though not on the cell.
