Beware the ides of March - for there shall be a London dopefest!

I’ve done a little canvassing and despite the economy being in the crapper and the fact that life as we know it hangs in the balance at the moment (or so the media would have us believe ) I thought it would be nice to organise a little get together of the London-based dope brethren.

So, what say you Gorilla Man, Tracey Lord, Cat in a Basket, Tirial, Ianzin and lots of other people who live in London but who I’ve forgotten for the moment (this is by no means an exhaustive roll call).

Sooooooooooooooooooo - how about Saturday 7th March, about 4pm? Location: I’m open to suggestions but somewhere central and easy to find is always good, maybe the Montague Pyke on Charing Cross Road? It’s a Wetherspoons so no loud music to shout over, and it’s a big place so no problems finding somewhere to sit (I’m happy to turn up a bit early and save some tables).

What say you Dopers of the Big Smoke (and indeed others who live nearby and want to travel in)?

Anyone?

I don’t live in London, but if I’m not able to secure some vacation for those dates (unlikely), I’ll try to drag my ass down south.

The 13th is my birthday, a round of drinks is on me

Yay! I know you’re currently far away Nava but I hope you can make it, you’re definitely a doper I’m keen to meet.

I’m giggling at the notion of Glasgow being “far away” from London  Mind you, with all this snow it surely isn’t a distance I’d be happy to drive!

That weekend should work for me so I’ll make the trip into the city…

It’s the other end of the bloody country! It’s hardly next door.

FL - woo hoo! St Albans isn’t too much of a schlep, I agree. You can also be a good reference point for the weight I’ve lost since I last saw you nine months ago (exclamations of “Wow you’ve lost loads of weight!” are mandatory).

Shall I make name badges for everyone?

I could be persuaded, and I think the choice of a Spoons is a good idea, for the reasons listed.

Name badges also good idea!

Yeah, totally! I missed hearing about the last one by a few days. Although, I have a conflicting thing on the 7th – would the 14th maybe work for everyone? (It’s closer to the Ides, anyway!)

Early to mid-March works for me.

Okay - can people indicate if they’re happy to do the 14th to accommodate Tracy? I can do either weekend, it’s not like I have a life or anything.

I can do either weekend as well…

At the moment, either weekend works for me. Can’t give a definite ‘yes’ because work commitments might take me out of the country at short notice.

I assume you will also be announcing this over on the NADS forum? ( = predominantly British spawn of SD).

Which ever pub you choose, there should be no need to get there early and ‘reserve’ some tables… which can be a bit tricky for one person to do anyway. Just organise it with the pub, tell them you’re getting some drinking buddies to come and give them lots of money over the bar, and can they please seal off one area or stick a few ‘reserved / private party’ signs on selected tables. If they won’t co-operate or can’t be bothered, choose another place that will.

I’m unaware of the NADS forum so could someone could do that for me? (or tell me where it is so I can sign up and do it myself - if there’s a spin off site that I can waste my time on as well as here I should probably know about it!)

I did think after posting that asking the pub to reserve a space was probably a better way of sorting a space, and I know the Montague does reserves because I’ve seen them previously.

Might consider it.

Does anyone have an issue hanging out with someone sporting a Hitler moustache and a mankini?

ETA: www.nadsters.com/nads/

Prince Harry will be there?!

Some of my best friends have Hitler moustaches and wear mankinis.

Ta, will sign up and do a cross refer thread - can’t believe I didn’t know it existed until now.

… I await with trembling anticipation the time when I’m at home and can do a google images on mankini… should I make sure I have the salts handy?

Another suggested venue (and now that I think about it one I probably prefer) is the Silver Cross at the top of Whitehall.

Pretty large, easy to find, less full of chavs than the Montague Pyke and also (I’m told) has a section you can reserve free. If no-one objects I think that should be the location and am happy to book once we’ve all settled on a date.

I saw John Simm drinking at the Silver Cross when he was doing a show at Trafalgar Studios. So, I vote there!
