Hochul

Hochul defeats Corwin in NY special election. Hochul's main campaign point was that the Ryan budget is a piece of shit. This was enough to turn the district dem for the first time in forty years. What does this mean going forward?

Link.

Before the 2010 elections, the GOPers were all about "JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! After they won the House, they went about trying to kill the unions, kill Medicare, reinstate the Bush tax cuts and put on a sideshow with their 2012 candidates led by Bertha Trump.

People are waking up a little bit and they are frightened a lot...

It's been a couple of hours sine the race was called and nary a mention on the Drudge Report, and the Fox News website has it deeply buried. They're having a hard time figuring out how to spin this.

I'm guessing that the plan will be to say that Ryan "started the conversation" on Medicare, but we didn't really mean that we were going to get rid of it.

The Republicans seem to have really botched this one. Swing and a miss.

Given how quickly Gingrich had to run back and praise Ryan's plan, and how much this sounds like a referendum on the Ryan plan, it will be very interesting to see what the national Republican position on the Ryan plan will be come 2012. At this point, I suspect that they'll have to drop the Ryan plan and bring out a similar plan to avoid the nasty associations that seniors will have with the Ryan plan. How well they can do this without admitting failure may determine their success in 2012.

Jack Davis will probably be blamed for taking votes that would have gone to Corwin.

I have to say though, Hochul's volunteers put in a lot of hours getting her name out there in the final stretch. I recall getting a few recordings for Corwin, but Hochul's camp called nearly every day, sometimes multiple times, for at least two weeks.

Or they'll gloss over it and say Ryan and House Republicans were noble in trying to discuss a reality "the country just wasn't ready to hear."

Indeed. Even though Jack Davis ran as a Democrat as recently as 2008.

Nate Silver has already debunked that.

This makes you want to vote for her?

It's election season. It comes with the territories. If you don't like the calls, either get your vote in early (where and when applicable) or tell them to take you off their list.

Nah, the real reason Hochul won is that some voters heard that she'd once punched out a shark in a tank of acid with big spikes on the bottom.

Not around here. Omega Glory said they called "nearly every day, sometimes multiple times, for at least two weeks." That would come across as harassment to me.

Which list, the campaign's? How do you tell that to a recorded message?

Putting the "H" on the front of her name was an excellent disguise, but you saw right through it!

They're not always recorded. For those that aren't robocalls, there are people.
