Hey all.

Mrs Chance and I throw parties twice a year, Halloween (costume required) and the weekend after Memorial Day.

Well, this year that's June 2nd. And the party is on. The catering is being arranged, the entertainment (a mime/clown from the Maryland Renaissance Festival) is booked, and the 110 CD changer is being loaded.

Free food, free beer, free entertainment and all things good.

And this time, you're invited! Yes, I meant YOU!

All are welcome to attend. We live in the Blue Ridge Mountains about 50 miles NW of Washington DC. Easy access for most of the mid-Atlantic.

So, is this a good idea? Will some of you come? Party starts at approximately 1-2PM and ends when (to quote Robert Heinlein) we decide to kick out or throw blankets over the drunks, depending.

We'll put up a web site with direction and other valuable data closer to the date of the party.

So tell me who's interested. The one thing I need is news of who plans to show and how many people they're bringing. It helps us to plan the food and entertainment.

So come on and see our old house in the country. We'll drink Virginia wine from Breaux Winery and play volleyball in the back yard. If everyone is really good/drunk we can even use the little tractor for Hayrides!

Are you with me here?

Can I get any luckier than this? I have been salivating at the opportunity to see the rhododendrens blooming along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or Skyline Drive, this spring. Now, I have an even better reason to head that way! AND, I just checked my schedule, and I'm on my long break from shift work that weekend! Please, oh puh-leEEEZE! let me come!

Y'all are killing me with kindness. Warms my heart it does.

[b]activgurl[/u]. Hillsboro is in a valley just 10 miles south of Harpers Ferry. The Blue Ridge and the Appalachian trail form the border of VA/WA about 2-3 miles from our place. You'll love it here. We do.

RTFirefly. It will be beautiful. I've been through several Springs up here. We just had a fog-filled St Patricks day and the sun coming over the ridge and burning it off is enough to give the hardest person pause.

I look forward to seeing everyone who comes. I'll take special requests for food and music if anyone has any.

I will, in all likelihood, be there. I just have to make sure my parents aren't planning something.

Just checked with phantomdiver (my mother, also a doper), who says we'll most likely be doing something that weekend. However, 1) that site is near our cabin, and 2)I spend enough time with my parents.

Will talk to pd more ITF and get a more definite answer. And she might even come herself!

Sounds like a lovely party, Jonathan.

OK, I had an ulterior motive in this post. I'm just bumping this up to see if I can catch some weekday attention here.

Well I can never plan too far ahead, but I'd sure like to make it, so if possible it would be just me and one friend to share the drive. And I'd probably need to know the closest hotel accomodations.

Nearest worthwhile hotel would be Charles Town, WV or Leesburg, VA. I can make the arrangements for you, ultress, if you like. Just let me know when and where.

I note that you mention the Appalacian Trail, but not the C&O Canal trail.

If you do go, and you mountain bike, be sure to being your bike and take a nice trip on the C&O Canal trail at Harpers Ferry. There are few better, flatter, more beautiful rides dirt trails.

Had to chime in. I have friends in Charles Town, Martinsburg, and Sharpsburg (3 states, all short drives from Hillsboro).

Oh yeah, there's a nice PAVED trail, the W&OD trail runs through Leesburg, VA all the way to Washington DC.

Put Mrs. O and myself down as a "maybe". First off I'm not sure what we're doing that far ahead and second I gotta convince her to go. If Breaux makes a Chardonnay that might help a bit!

Wow, just another lesson for me in the power of proper thread titles!

goboy, I can't help you with a carpool but I'm sure someone can.

Who_me?, I've never been to a Dopefest either, and while this isn't what you'd call a strict dopefest (being a mix of dopers and fanboys, people we work with, college pals, and other fellow travellers) I think this'll count. So, of course, you're welcome to attend.

Olentzero, so you're in the maybe stage. I can handle that. It's still 10 weeks away, after all. I hope you can make it! Chardonnay? I'll make sure it's brought in special. Would she like her own bottle? We make some good wines out here in the mountains.

JuanitaTech, Baltimore isn't all that far away. It's just a hop, skip and a jump by way of 70, to 340 in Frederick and down 671 from Brunswick, MD. Should take an hour and a half maybe. We just did the drive to the inner harbor for my birthday a month ago and that's what it took us.

Lucretia, I'm glad to hear you five are coming. The more the merrier! The kids are certainly welcome. The mime ("O, A Fool" from the festival) is vastly entertaining for kids. And, if they're small, we have a playset and a tire swing. If they're a little bigger and you're comfortable with it, they can drive the little tractor (just a 13HP lawn tractor) around the yard. The 10-14 year old crowd usually loves doing that at our parties.

ANYONE ELSE?

Boston delicacy, eh? I suppose SexyWriter is out of the question?

JUST A JOKE, FOLKS! Put down those torches and pitchforks! If I can't laugh about this week I'll break down in tears.

But seriously folks...

Robot Arm, you are more than welcome to come. If you want to bring something, that's great, but don't feel you have to.

As a matter of fact, anyone can bring anything to the party that they wish to share. Just nothing illegal, that's all I ask. We'll have kids there, after all.

As far as when I need to know for sure...call in mid-May. I need to get the catering finalized about two weeks prior to der tag.

So that's about 8 weeks from now. All are still welcome. Just post here and keep this lil Virginia boy happy!

You know, I saw that line coming when I wrote my post. Really, I did. But I decided to take a risk on the discretion and good taste of my fellow dopers. I knew you wouldn't let me down.

As for bringing something, I was thinking of a friend of mine from when I lived in Harrisburg. She had a friend who would bring a case of hard cider whenever she visitied from Boston. Just imagine the possibilities if we could get the far-flung dopers of the world together; Copper River salmon with Chesapeake crabs and San Francisco sourdough... I may have to start a thread just for hypothetical suggestions.

Robot Arm, I knew the shot was cheap but who am I to turn down a straight line like that? Some things have to be said.

I like the idea of regional delicacies. If we can get Dopers of the world to attend the party that would be wonderful.

SuaSponte I hope you can make it and I hope your move goes well.

So, to date we're looking at interest from:

Montfort
activgurl
RTFirefly
iampunha (and maybe phantomdiver)
ultress
goboy
Who_me?
Olentzero and Mrs O
JuanitaTech
Lucretia, Bluesman and kids
RobotArm
Weirddave
SuaSponte

Pentagon City sounds fine, goboy.

Right now it's just me coming. iamsister1 (also known as phantomdaughter1) has an awards ceremony that is theoretically that day, so that takes precedence for everyone but me. Plus pd ain't social much at all escept when she has to be.

I will warn you all in advance: I am a savage volleyball player.

Well, here I was all ready to give this its bi-weekly bumpity bump bump and here activgurl went and did it for me.

AG, I can't really offer to show you any camping space (as I don't know any) but, if you want to bring a tent and stay overnight on my little acre and a half, you're more than welcome. AND you wouldn't be the only one who's mentioned such a plan.

So, my bump this week is about food. What should I bring in? I'll have cold cuts in the afternoon (we always do that) but in the evening I'll have stuff catered in. What do you all like? I could have BBQ brought in, or some other meat thing, I could have hot finger food brought in like swedish meatballs or pigs in a blankets...

Really, the possibilities are almost endless. I'm looking for suggestions here. And I wouldn't mind some suggestions for my vegetarian pals, too.

Hey, I'm staying out of the whole 'young lovers' thing other than to say, "Ain't Love Grand!"

No we don't have a pool, there isn't public water out here so it'd be a leetle bit difficult to keep the thing filled. We've toyed with the whole 'above ground' thing but will probably wait until Lil Baby Kate is a bit older.

So, once again, all I can offer you is:

Free Booze
Loud Music
Much Food
Quality Entertainment
and the beauty of the Appalachians

Maybe, if the timing works out, we can even get the Underbear to attend. I'm on the list, you know.

Any other party-type suggestions?

And Anniz...what if we set up a webcam? Could you track Montfort that way? Could he attend then?

Airman Doors of course you can come. I don't have any Doors CDs (my classic rock leanings being limited to Queen and the Rolling Stones) but if you bring them, they will play.

that_darn_cat, we could very much use the help, vegetarian-wise. One of our pals is a strict vegetarian (her phrase) and we strike out every dang time trying to come up with something for her.

So please help us! You're our only hope!

Apparently, I didn't.

My dopefest quotient will go up by 10 if everyone comes! Yippee!

Gosh . . . I have my English final done, I have no worries for sociology, no worries for psych, summer is planned, fall is getting to be that way . . . and my dopefest quotient is going to get near 50.

Life is good.

John Corrado, yes Greg will be there (so he tells me) and Rebecca is more than welcome to come as well. I look forward to having you all out. Last time you didn't get closer than the driveway at 3AM if I recall correctly.

Try to bring that Chrononaut game, will you? I think I'm going to set up my music room as a game room this time and that was a lot of fun.

And what's a 'dopefest quotient'?

How's everyone doing? I haven't been able to come up with any food suggestions, but as long as it isn't haggis or some kind of blood pudding, I think we'll be alright. I'm still looking forward to this get-together! You wouldn't mind if me & my tent squat on a piece of your yard/field? We thank you in advance.

activgurl, as long as it's not a circus tent we should be OK. We've got an acre and a half and lose about 1/3 of it to the buildings so there should be room for you. Heck, you're not the only one who's mentioned wanting to camp on site.

Bear in mind though, I live right ON Route 9. You can camp withing sight of the road or behind the guest house (it's not ready for guests) with a lovely view of the propane tank. Hey, the choice is yours...

Still looking for food suggestions. Otherwise I'm sticking with middle-american food, cold cuts, BBQ, that sort of thing...

A few quick vegatarian/vegan suggestions:

Obvious, but a big prepared veggie tray. Most folks will nibble on this anyway. If your freind doesn't do dairy, then you may wish to serve an italian or other dairy-free dressing. It's worth checking the bottle for animal indgredients.

If your planning on barbacuing, there are numerous brands of Veggie burgers and dogs, moi and I are fond of Moringstar Farms, but Boca makes a vegan burger that your freind should be able to eat. You may have to throw some tinfoil on the grill to keep the meat juices off them. (I'm not that picky, but some folks are.)

A pasta sald without mayo or dairy will probably pass muster.

We'd be willing to bring a dish or two, and bring down the veggie burgers, let us know the aprroximate number of veggies coming.

Cheers
