On my Windows 7 laptop, running Chrome. Several times a week I find my “last visited” time stamp is wrong. I haven’t logged in since Sunday, but it claims my last visit was at 8:25am today.
On the off chance someone was logging in as me, I changed my password…but it’s still happening.
This causes the “new messages” links to not work. Instead, I have to scroll up and find the last message I read, and go from there.
I do keep the same copy of my web browser running, but I close all the tabs except my e-mail tab when I’m done. I don’t visit SDMB from any other computers.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Are there any logs that would show if the system really thinks I logged in?
Why does it even keep track, anyway? I’m just not sure how the information is valuable to people who come to the site…Another board I go to always says “you last visited 18 hours ago.” Always. Even if I visited earlier that day. Even if it’s been 2 months since I last went to the site.
Oh wait, I see. You’re one of the people who navigate via “new messages.” No wonder I don’t get it; I never click that on purpose.
How do you handle opening a thread and finding new messages? Do you just scan through until you hit something you don’t remember? Or is there another way that might help me?
Pure speculation here, but Chrome has a ‘session restore’ feature that allows you to reopen one or more closed tabs with a single click. (as explained hereby Google)
Firefox has a similar feature and I have never encountered this issue, but it came to mind when you mentioned you close the SDMB tab but leave the browser running. Do you remember if at 8:25 you did anything in the browser as far as opening new tabs or using session restore to bring back other closed tabs?
I have had the opposite problem occasionally, after clicking ‘new messages’ or viewing my subscribed threads. Sometimes posts that are not new to me have been marked as new again even though I read and possibly even posted in them since that time.
Hmm. I’m pretty sure I’m not running in to a session restore interaction - I never use the feature, and have the startup versions of it disabled.
I’ve had it tag my “last visit” time as times I was in the shower…or at the office. Not always, but often enough that I’m confident that I’m not directly causing it.
I guess I can try exiting my web browser, and starting a new, clean session.
For your ‘reverse’ issue… I’ve seen that if I come back too soon. I think there is a minimum granularity of the time keeping that makes it think you’re still there from last time, and presents stale data.
The title text to threads you’ve already read turn a different color. I’m not great at color id, but it looks gray to me. Plus, if you go to your profile and click your history, it lists every thread you’ve posted in, so you can re-find things that way too.
