One-offs that you love despite disliking the rest of the genre.

This thread, What old horror movie should my friends and I watch?, in which I laud Suspiria despite my general disregard for horror movies; I think, for instance, The Shining is yawn inducing, made me wonder about other one-off favorites.

I pretty much despise modern country music but absolutely love Dwight Yoakham’s stuff and have a lot of it.

Any other examples?

Reminds me of Chris Rock’s joke: if you’re an old white guy and you hear a rap song you like, chances are it’s the worst one ever made.

To the topic: I don’t generally care for cop shows but *The Wire *was fantastic.

I almost always avoid anything science fictiony, but I really enjoyed Battlestar Galactica (including the finale).
mmm

I’m not a big fan of reality TV, and never have been. I think I’ve seen one episode of Survivor, and couldn’t wait for it to be over. I’ve seen bits and pieces of others, but nothing held my interest.

But for some strange reason, I’ll watch reality shows featuring chef Gordon Ramsay. Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, and MasterChef–I like these, and look forward to seeing them.

I actually love The Shining, didn’t care for Suspiria. But a lot of people love Suspiria, so that could just be me.

I don’t care for country music, but love Lyle Lovett (even his early stuff that’s unambiguously country).

I almost posted this, but disqualified myself because I also like Hank Sr. and Johnny Cash.

Lyle Lovett is seriously underrated.
mmm

Dislike horror movies in general and horror movies in particular. Love Shaun of the Dead.

I don’t like most rap, but I buy Eminem’s albums.

I think that is because he is hard to classify. While he does have some country moments, I would not consider him a country singer.

I’m not a fan of westerns but I love Back to the Future 3.

I’m willing to bet the second “horror” in that statement was meant to be “zombie.”

I am not a general fan of torture porn, but I thought Saw had its merits.

You are correct!

I generally dislike everything Ashton Kutcher has done. But I really liked No Strings Attached (including his performance in that movie).

Todd Rundgren’s “Emperor of the Highway” is, I am told, completely unlike anything else he has ever performed. I love it, but friends have told me that his other stuff wouldn’t be to my taste.

He’s won 4 Grammy awards: 3 in the country category, and 1 for pop. You may be in the minority there.

I don’t like westerns, but the remake of True Grit was a great movie.

I dislike most horror movies, but I loved The Shining and John Carpenter’s The Thing.

I don’t like torture porn, but I liked Apocalypso.

I don’t like gangster movies, but I love Casino.

I am not a fan of Adam Sandler, but I love Little Nicky.

In general, I disapprove of movies about show biz, or songs about music. (I consider it to be artistic onanism.) But I love the songs, “American Pie” and “Drift Away”, and the movies S.O.B. and Living in Oblivion.
