Best of the Rest of the Top 40: 2011

Sorry I’m a few days late on this one.

The year is now 2011, and I had to go to #42 to get 25 songs for this poll. This is a really good year IMO and the first one in awhile where I really had to ruminate over my vote. (It’s also, for some reason, the F-bombiest year in the history of the pop charts.)

What’s your favorite?

This place about to Blow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow!

Kesha’s song is one of the few songs ever to earn a perfect score in the world-famous Ponch8 Music Rating System. “Blow” just barely beats out “Till the World Ends,” also written by Kesha. The remix of “Till the World Ends” (featuring vocals by Kesha) also has a perfect score, but we are not voting on the remix here.

Consolation prize for best non-Kesha song: “Coming Home,” slightly ahead of “Fuck You.”

In dead-ass last place is a tie between “TGIF” (produced by rapist motherfucker Dr. Luke) and “The Show Goes On” by complete asshole Lupe Fiasco. Both songs get AUTOMATIC ZERO scores in the Ponch8 Music Rating System.

Nice to see a classy, thoughtful song like The Band Perry - “If I Die Young”. Too many of the songs from this period leave me cold – “Go ahead $creecha, yell into the mike for 5 minutes. We’ll add music later. Autotune will do the rest”.

There’s actually a lot of good stuff here. I went with “Stereo Hearts” only because I didn’t want to spend any more time mulling it over. Could just as easily have gone with any one of about three other songs.

I went with “If I Die Young.” “Pumped Up Kicks” was a good song too, though.

I narrowly went with “The Edge of Glory” on this one, for its subject matter and for Clarence Clemons’ sax solo (one of his final performances before he died later that year), but I could just as easily have voted for “Fuck You”, “Perfect”, or “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Fuck You.

Yep, Cee Lo Green for me, but lots of good stuff on here.

Oh yeah? The same to you, buddy!

Some of the song titles sound like it’s third-grade recess time and the boys have learned a new naughty word and are trying it out in all its glory.

I went for whimsy (and laziness) so Bruno Mars.

Ever since they told us we couldn’t say this here anymore, I’ve been dying to say it. I figured this was my golden opportunity.

Lots of fucks in 2011, haha. Voted for Mr. Mars, but could have gone with Lady Antebellum and Gaga, Foster the People, Cee Lo Green, Pitbull and T-Pain and OneRepublic but the last got my vote in 2010.

So it’s the 5’5 Bruno Mars.

I went for Fuck You. Because of course I did. (Also, it’s a good song with an emotional core)

Pumped Up Kicks for me. Like I said before, CeeLo the rape apologist is never getting my vote.

Wow, 3 songs with “fuck” somewhere in the title, must be a record of some kind
