FF defensive points allowed by position

The one fantasy stat I could never find was fantasy points allowed by defense for a given position. For example, let’s say you plan to use a revolving TE, so each week you pick up the best TE available and start him. Normally you look at the top 5 or 6 scoring TEs available and choose the one who faces the weakest defense. But what defenses are weak against TEs? That’s the great unanswerable question. Until now.

I have written a data capture program that lets me copy & paste yahoo fantasy stats for everyone in the league each week. Each page displays 25 players, and each week has around 300 players who get in the game, so it takes around a dozen or so copy & paste operations each week. That’s quite manageable, so I plan to do this every week as a service to the doper FF players. Look for updates every Tuesday night around midnight. (That’s when I process the keeper league waiver claims.)

This chart shows the fantasy points allowed by each defense, split out by position. The charts should be pretty self-explanatory, but as a quick example, the data shows that Buffalo is super weak at defending against TEs for whatever reason.

The above numbers show average fantasy scoring, but I capture all individual stats. eg: Passing yards, sacks, Rushing TDs, etc… That means I can calculate the fantasy points using whatever scoring system would make these numbers most useful. The above numbers use the scoring system from the All-Pro league, which is as follows:

Passing Yards 20 yards per point; 1 points at 200 yards; 1 points at 325 yards
Passing Touchdowns 4
Interceptions -2
Sacks -.4
Rushing Yards 10 yards per point; 1 points at 100 yards; 1 points at 175 yards
Rushing Touchdowns 6
Receptions .5
Reception Yards 10 yards per point; 1 points at 85 yards; 1 points at 150 yards
Reception Touchdowns 6
Return Yards 25 yards per point
Return Touchdowns 6
2-Point Conversions 2
Fumbles -1
Fumbles Lost -1
Offensive Fumble Return TD 6

What system should I use to make the numbers most useful for multiple leagues?

I plan to add a similar chart for kickers, as well as a reverse chart showing which offenses give up the most points to defenses. Hopefully by next week’s games.

I would also like feedback on how to calculate averages. Right now it’s just a simple average, which is fine for two weeks of data. But as we get further into the season, the early weeks will be less meaningful. So what is the best way to weight the averages?

Sorry to tell you this after you put all this effort in, but fftoday.com actually does this under their stats section, in quite a bit of detail.

Sweet, thanks for the tip.

That’s very cool; I’ll be especially interested to see which offenses give up the most points to fantasy defenses, info I’ve been pining after for a long time.

FO uses certain ratios for their weighted DVOA stat that may (or may not) be helpful as a rough guide to when and to what extent old results are non-predictive. The old weights are given at the bottom of this page. I’ll see about finding the current weights later.

(Ha, just got your PM after having looked up exactly the info you wound up requesting. :))

Any update here?

ESPN has some similar stats, although they don’t let you change the scoring system used.

I assume he isn’t working on his own system since I linked to other sites that automate this.
