I also dislike rum but Stroh rum from Austria is amazing; it tastes like butterscotch to me. It’s the only rum like liquid I will consider drinking.
I prefer brandy (Cognac especially) but, as I use brandy for no other purpose, I usually end up with my once-a-year nog spiked with spiced rum. This is also acceptable.
Amaretto. I’ve used some pretty cheap stuff and it matters not.
Heh, I was about to say “what, no one’s mentioned amaretto yet??” but Jenaroph did, so all’s well.
Eggnog and Kahlua sounds fantastic.
I think a whole bottle of Glenfiddich, creamy, lightly spiced, eggnog punch made with Sterling’s eggnog would be the best. You have to serve it chilled immediately in a large libby punch bowl, red candles, Holly and berries to centerpiece.
I put rye in it.
I have never “poured” eggnog, I have only “scooped” it.
I think that is an important gastonomie. Punch Set: Ladle, bowl and demitasse… closely realated to the soup set.
I prefer whiskey, but on the liqueur theme, Drambuie or Benedictine work well.
I too think rye whiskey is best. Which is odd, because as a mixed drink I don’t care for it, and like rum instead. But not in eggnog.
We’ve always done the traditional Captain Morgan’s spiced rum.
