10 Years of SpongeBob SquarePants

I’ve seen a few episodes, I think it’s fucking stupid. But I’m not a big fan of the quirky animation where it follows someone who is charmingly stupid and consists mostly of people yelling at each other.

The only thing I can remember ever thinking was funny was the squirrel that lived in a bowl at the bottom of the sea.

Yeah, not everyone would like that kind of humor, I can get that. But stupid it ain’t.

lissen to you.

There was one episode in particular that I thought had a scene that was uproariously funny.

At the very beginning of the episode, Spongebob is sitting in his living room chair, leaning forward watching TV, with a very excited look on his face. The TV briefly shows an anenome waving back and forth with some goofy music playing. Spongebob looks really excited.

Gary strolls into the room and meows.

Spongebob is all “Gary! I was just watching the, uh…sports channel!” as he furiously clicks the remote to change the channel.

It was clearly a porn (of the under the sea invertebrate kind) reference.

Spongebob’s uncomfortable reaction to being “busted” was absolutely hilarious.

Anyone seen that one?

Ah, Spongebob. I’ve been watching it since its premiere and it’s still hilarious.

Another raunchy reference: Spongebob is desperately trying to give Gary a bath. He paints some soap to look like coins and says, “Look Gary, doubloons!” then whispers, “Don’t drop them!”

That’s the episode where Gary fools Spongebob into thinking he’s up a tree with an old phonograph of himself meowing.

Last line in the episode as it’s Spongebob that gets the bath instead of Gary:

“I’m a dirty boy”.

Good one!

Ahhh, here’s what I was talking about! Now this is a cartoon that adults can enjoy along with children!

Oh, thank god, I feel so much better knowing I’m not the only childless adult who watches this. And I hope all of y’all have voted for your top 10 episodes.

Going through the lists on that site, I wish you could pick your top 20 or 30. There are so many great ones. I think “Best Day Ever” might be my favorite, because Spongebob’s breakdown never fails to bust me up. “Band Geeks” has to be up there, too, especially because of its sweet ending.

And any episode with Plankton.

On the website I linked to, there’s a great interview with Mr. Lawrence (voice of and creator of Plankton).

My favorites are "Band Geeks, especially the “Sweet Victory” song, and “Karate Choppers,” where SpongeBob and Sandy are addicted to practicing martial arts together, whenever and wherever the mood strikes them. After SpongeBob gets reprimanded for fighting with Sandy at work, he resolves to give up karate, but that resolve quickly falls apart during a picnic with Sandy, in which making sandwiches quickly devolves into an orgy of karate. I thought I was the only one who thought karate was used as a metaphor for sex in this episode, but I was wrong, judging by some of the comments I’ve read on YouTube.

Gotta love Plankton.

I was thinking about this episode today and realizing how many great lines it has.

“Does mayonnaise count as an instrument?”
“Do instruments of torture count?”
“BIG…MEATY…CLAWS.” “These claws aren’t just fer attractin’ mates!”

And as far as Plankton goes, “Imitation Krabs” has two of my favorite Plankton lines of all time: “This spaghetti with meatballs is delicious. Belch” (I love the way he says “belch” rather than actually belching) and “Coin-operated self-destruct…not one of my better ideas.”

Please explain this for me.

The old prison advice, “don’t drop the soap.”

Prison “joke”. Drop something in the shower => bend over to pick it up => surprise buttsex.

I love the references to the absurdity of this life under water. They go to the beach…under water. They drive boats…under water. They have campfires…under water. My favorite, is when they get an invitation to Patchy the Pirate’s party. SpongeBob and Patrick look at the invitation with it’s ink running, and SpongeBob says something about the sender not knowing anything about the physics of life under water. He then tells Patrick to throw the invitation on the fire. Hilarious.

I’m also quite fond of the special appearances by Patchy the Pirate and Potty the Parrot when introducing new episodes. There’s usually some comedy gold in those segments.

I just like the fact that they live in Bikini Bottom which is probably at the bottom of Bikini Atoll (the site of extensive post war nuclear testing). It is a pun that works on so many levels.

Even their not-so-good episodes have comedy gold in every bit. Not alot. Sometimes the writing is off, but there is always a bon mot of goodness.

I had to do a double take when I saw that one the first time

I don’t really like the amount of TV my ex lets my daughter watch but I relax a little for Spongebob.

Isn’t there an episode where they flood the town?

Another great episode is “We Stole A Balloon!”, especially the part where Spongebob and Patrick are “on the lam” for stealing a balloon (unbeknownst to them, on Free Balloon Day), and Patrick mentions he’s starving, and Spongebob says:
“Look what I’ve got!” (produces two candy bars)
Patrick says, with evident glee in his voice “Rectangles!”

That slays me every time.

Or the other line from the same episode
Patrick: “Liar, liar, plants for hire!”
Spongebob: “It’s pants on fire, Patrick”
Patrick: “Well you would know…liar
