There are a lot of threads on a lot of cartoons on this board, but I’ve noticed a lack of Spongebob threads. I used to assume it was your standard juvenile childrens cartoon, but in reality, its pretty damn funny and witty, with some pretty good characters- Spongebob the good hearted spazz, Squidward the uptight effete (gay?) fop, Krabbs the skinflint, Patrick the moron, Plankton the maniacal evil genius, etc. Its really rare for a cartoon to appeal to adults and children without having to resort to entendres to get the adults to laugh- its much harder and more creative to get laughs without working blue, but SBSP is porbably the only cartoon that pulls that trick off (I’m looking at you Shrek).
Some of my favorite episodes are when SB thinks Krabbs is a robot, SB pretends to be dumb when Patricks parents visit, SB tries to get a bus back to Bikini Bottom, SB finds a wig, SB decides he doesn’t want his nan to baby him anymore, etc.
Surely there to has to be some closeted SB fans out here! Stand up and be counted
Oh, nautical nonsense be something I wish. I love SpongeBob. Strangely enough, my two favorite shorts both share an episode: “Wet Painters” (SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to paint Mr. Krabs’s house) and “Krusty Krab Training Video” (a parody of employee training videos teaches you everything you need to know to work at the Krusty Krab…almost). Some of the lines in these I often quote or think about: “We’re not cavemen! We have technology!” “You messed up my dollar…ama!” “The Krusty Krab didn’t become the eating establishment it is today overnight…because it closes at 6.”
I love all of the episodes with the Flying Dutchman, especially the one where Spongebob and Patrick have to serve on his crew and haunt the seas. I especially loved the part where they try to escape: “The only way out is…through the perfume department?!”
My all-time favorite episode would have to be “F.U.N.”, however.
You ‘conveniently’ left out Sandy the squirrel, and Mrs. Puff.
Some of the episodes are pure genius; like the This is Art class, and the Box which has adventures in it.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Who lives in a pineapple under the sea??
I less than three Spongebob. My favorite is the one where Spongebob & Mr Krabs think they’ve killed the health inspector… " You really haven’t got any brains at all, have you, Son?"
Trying to remember…Ah, the cheap pranks one (where he was invisible)
The hash slinging slasher, the taking the day off where Squidward leaves him there by himself and worries so much about him destroying the place and it turns out it was closed anyway.
I love Sponegbob! It’s awesome to see (basically) a 4 year old face adult situations like driving and the daily grind at work. (Plankton and his schemes are hysterical, too!) Yet, it seems I’ve seen the same episodes over and over. I haven’t caught a “Flying Dutchman” episode. sigh…
Even funnier? The products on the market with a Spongebob face on it! I just saw a Spongebob nerf football…riot!
Add me to the list!! My favorite episodes are “Free Balloon Day,” the aforementioned “Health Inspector,” and “Jellyfish Party.” (Not actual names, I think.)
I adore Squidward, because I see a lot of myself in him, getting exasperated with Spongebob and Patrick’s ridiculous behaviour and trying to relax and chill out without something going horribly wrong.
Hell, I even loved the movie!! But I may have been biased, since the Flaming Lips were on the soundtrack…NAH, it was a great movie.
However, my favorite episode is probably the secret box, where Patrick has a box and won’t let Spongebob see what’s inside.
My second favorite is when Squidward, in an attempt to impress his rival, Squilliam Fancypants, tells Squilliam that he has a band.
Squidward: “Has anyone ever played an instrument before?” Patrick’s hand goes up
Patrick:" Is mayonnaise an instrument?"
Squidward: “No Patrick, mayonnaise is not an instrument.” Patrick’s hand goes up again
Squidward: “No Patrick, horseradish is not an instrument either.” Patrick’s hand goes down
No misogyny intended- I find Sandy’s accent unberable. Mrs. Puff is ok though, and I really dig Planktons wife Karens (northern?) accent- “spuhnge baahb”, etc.
I love the episode where SpongeBob forgets how to tie his shoes. Just the idea that an entire episode of something can be built around the notion that a sponge has forgotten how to tie his shoes makes me happy.
I also like the sequence where we see SpongeBob leering lustfully at a nature show about undersea life (real underwater film footage) and he quickly changes the channel when someone walks in on him.
This has my vote for best closing line- as SpongeBob and pals laugh at their crazy misconception, the Jacques Cousteau-esque narrator chimes in wistfully, “Yes, they are all idiots, aren’t they?”
I was nagging my son the other day for not cleaning his room, because I told him to do it and then, two hours later, I went in and nothing was done! He giggled and I snapped, “What?” "You said,*‘Two Hours Later’ * "!
We also like the episode where Spongebob and Patrick have run away and Spongebob shares out the candy bars. Patrick: “I think I’ll eat it now! …I think I’ll eat it now! Hey, you stole my candy!” and then of course, Spongebob’s antics with the candy bar which he has no intention of handing over to Patrick.
Another good one is when Patrick and Spongebob are having a boxing match because they’re mad at each other, and yank each other’s pants down to reveal sponge-yellow undies on Pat and starfish-pink undies on SB. “You DO care!” Patrick: “These were white when I bought them.”
I’m not a fan, personally, but a few clips I’ve seen have been amusing, one in particular stands out, where SpongeBob and Patrick are sitting around a campfire, Patrick wonders aloud how it’s possible for fire to work underwater, at which point, the campfire extinguishes itself
other than that, I can’t stand the sheer magnitude of stupidity that emanates from the show, but it does have it’s moments, the quotes taken out of context can be quite amusing (like the “instruments” quote upthread)
