OK, I was surfing by the Cartoon Network last night. I’ve never seen the JLA before, but I’ve read about it here in Cafe Society. So when I saw it was on I stopped and watched. I came in after the start, so had a little trouble getting into it, but as it was a one hour episode there was time to figure things out.
Correct me if I’m wrong, those who are knowlageable about this show. The evil force the JLA and others were up against was a shadowy figure with lots of tentacles, and referred to as an Old One. I never saw it’s name spelled, but Hawkgirl, whose people are said to have once worshipped it, call it (sounds like)“Ickthulhoo”.
Is that supposed to be a reference to Cthulhu? Or is it a coincidence of sounds?
On a side note, I hadn’t seen these characters, Superman, WonderWoman, et al, in a very long time. And I must say the new visualization of Aquaman is, ahem, much more attractive than the more clean cut one I remember from the sixties. Forgive an old fogey here.
Yes, I’m pretty sure that the writers gave a big nod to Lovecraft with that episode. I mean, even before I heard the name Ickthultoo, I recognized the being as strikingly similar to Cthulhu. I thought it was a pretty good episode; they carried it out really well.
A shame about Grundy though… He was just misunderstood. And violently angry. But still misunderstood.
I rather liked the episode, but I’m hoping for an episode someday wherein it is reavealed that Hawkgirl is god himself in disguise, because that’s about the only way to explain how she and her mace seem to be the most powerful force in the universe.
I was rather thinkng that after the Warworld episodes, where:
[spoiler] Hawkgirl smacks a giant Energy Cannon Shot O’ Doom capable of destroying planets back down the cannon tube. WTF was that about? I can destroy planets, but not Hawkgirl or Warworld? And it wasn’t travelling at near the Speed of Light- you could bloody well see it!
