Hawkgirl’s back. Amazo, too.
Finally we learn why her mace is so unspeakably powerful.
Vixen looks a little jealous of John’s attention to Shayera.
Superman : “Do I look okay?”

I missed the JL episode they refered to: the one where Grundy died. Can I get an update?
And was I the only one confused when Supes and GL said she was never kicked out of the JL. It sure looked that way to me after the HawkPeople were defeated.
They took a vote about kicking her out - but she didn’t stay to hear the result.
I never saw Grundy’s death, either - missed that episode.
This episode was only eh.
Bet, after Grundy was through pounding the Big Red S, Vixen was happy he took over. “I can handle him.” - yeah, right.
The relative power levels of these heroes to their comic book counterparts is annoying to the extreme. I’ll give a pass on Grundy’s enhanced Chaos Magic power (from three geeky, non-magical teens, no less), calling it normal comic book nonsense necessary to get a story rolling. However, they’ve immasculated Green Lantern, Vixen seemed much more powerful than she should be (but my knowledge of her is limited), Dr. Fate should be opening for David Copperfield, and Hawkgirl is a match for Amazo.
The plusses of this episode:
No Batman or Wonder Woman.
Superman: So now we’re letting him out of the satellite?
Dr. Fate: Do you want to try and keep him in?
The JL voted on whether or not to keep her in, but she ran away before John could tell her how it came out. This episode was the first time we got to know. As an aside, how do you think the vote was split? Here’s my guess:
Superman: In
Wonder Woman: Out
Batman: In (Yes, he’s harsh, but he’s also all about redemption, and keeping his enemies close)
GL: Abstain
Flash: In
J’onn: Out
I forget precisely how Grundy got involved, but he and a group of heroes (WW, Aquaman, Hawkgirl, and Fate, IIRC. It was a riff on Marvel’s old Defenders series) took on Icthulu (who is similar to but legally distinct from Lovecraft’s Cthullu), a god of Thanagar (the Hawkpeople’s world), before the Thanagarians developed Nth metal technology (like the mace) and banished them. They’ve been atheists ever since, which made a nice contrast with the devout Pagan WW. Anyway, Hawkgirl and Grundy made friends, until Grundy gave his life slaying Icthulu.
So now we’re letting him out of the tower?
I would be intrigued to hear how you plan to keep him there. (or some such - not exact, but closer)
Menocchio. Grundy got involved because Dr. Fate required a “soulless vessel” and because, as you said, the JLA lineup was a Defenders homage, which required a near-mindless Hulk-like character to work.
Glad to hear Vixen got a speaking part this time around. I haven’t seen this episode yet.
I would rather they didn’t have Amazo leave the tower. It seems like he’s going to be suffering from the “now that he’s good, he’s weaker for no reason” syndrome that plagues most reformed villains. After what he did to the League in the episode where he returned, there’s no way he can’t take out Grundy in about five seconds (Hawkgirl mentioned teleporting him into the sun… why didn’t he?).
Anyway, it was nice to find out about Hawkgirl’s mace. Have they mentioned that it was made of Nth metal before? Because when they said it, I had a “oh yeah, duh” moment, like I should have thought of it before. Do we know whether her wings are real or Nth metal?
I’m also surprised and relieved that they didn’t wimp out and go for some “Grundy gets his mind back at the last minute” ending, which I thought for sure they’d do. Granted, if Grundy is anything like his comic book counterpart, he always comes back anyway.
It was cool seeing Vixen, too. I’ve got a thing for animal-powered characters, so it was nice to see her be rather powerful and compotent.
I missed the very beginning, did they show how/why Grundy was awakened, and why so powerful?
A bunch of D&D nerds summoned dark forces to make them stronger to beat up the bullies who hassle them. They screwed up the spell.
I loved that bit. So close to home.
Green Arrow: “I get more stimulating conversation out of the android.”
Amazo: “You are aware I am sitting right here?”
Aquaman. C’mon, give the dude some respect.
Something I’ve noticed - the end credits seem to be showing clips from upcoming episodes these days… unless Dark Heart had a lot of Western-oriented content?
Didn’t I see your name on the closing credits? :dubious:
Hmm? No, no…
“Did you forget your dice again?”
Vigilante did get some (masked) face time in Dark Heart.
Okay. I’ve just seen the episode.
This was one of the better no-holds-barred fistfights in awhile – any ep that has Superman on the receiving end of some facial scarring is all right with me!
Nice to see some resonance from Hawkgirl and Green Lantern’s prior relationship – although it’s pretty clear that John’s moved on. Why is it when I rebound from a hottie, I never get a supermodel hottie?
Props to writer Dwayne McDuffie for his teleplay with some priceless nonverbal cues. I liked the fist smashing through the door bit at the start of the episode-- I particularly liked how John was considering that two-piece bikini when Vixen was changing clothes at the fashion show.
I agree that Vixen’s strength in this episode seemed a bit amplified – as I recall she can assume powers from various African animals. I doubt that even the combination of an elephat’s peak strength and a cheetah’s top speed can knock Solomon Grundy through two buildings.
All in all, nice show. Hit all the right notes, even if the D&D guys surely got squished off-screen.
I see. Uncredited appearance - they’re very vogue these days.
A nice episode indeed. Good ending and it was good to see Hawkgirl actually utilized. This is a good series though Cartoon Netwok seemingly refuses to repeat this show. I keep forgetting to tape it (no Tivo :smack: ). Any reason for the lack of repeats?
It will rerun Saturday morning. Used to be all I ever saw were reruns of the first 4 episodes. If you check out cartoonnetwork.com or comicscontinuum.com you can usually find a schedule of all upcoming episodes, rerun or not.
