The secret of Wonder Woman’s lasso is unlocked!!
Finally!!
This was a good show. This ep and the upcoming Hunter’s Moon firmly reintroduce Shayera to the ranks of the Justice League by interacting with two key female members. Others have commented on several really funny cut-off lines of dialogue.
Hard to believe that Are’s War Suit stolen in the last episode, “Task Force X”, get’s hijacked again and destroyed by the end of this episode. What a senseless waste of good armament!
“But I am your daughter!”
Heh.
I’m a little concerned that Shayera’s Nth metal magic-disrupting mace is becoming the deus-ex-machina problem solver. I hope they don’t overdo that.
A classic. Appearance of the Demons Three; some nice voice talent in use. Cameo by the Necronomicon, there … great library-hushing gag, very subtle.
But minus ten points for not featuring the Phantom Stranger. Oh, sure, I always subtract ten points from my rating of JLU episodes because they feature neither the Phantom Stranger, nor Ambush Bug, but this time, the Stranger would’ve made sense.
I think Bruce Timm said in an interview that for whatever reason, they were not allowed to use the Phantom Stranger in the cartoon. He’s also said that Blue Beetle and Plastic Man are off limits.
As are a significant portion of Batman’s supporting cast - due to The Batman and Teen Titans.
Black Lightning’s also out.
(Source for that lot - Dwayne McDuffie’s site - his webboard, speciically. McDuffie himself mentioned Black Lightning, the others were all discussed, although he, himself, didn’t specifically mention any of them in any threads I can get at without signing up. He has not corrected anyone who brought it up, though.)
I understand that Firestorm’s available to them, but they passed because of the possibility of confusing him with Waverider (why in the world they chose Waverider over Firestorm I do NOT know). I suspect Jade’s out for the same reason (sub Fire for Waverider).
Why would the Stranger be off limits? I wasn’t aware of any rights tangle with him, like the one with Blue Beetle…
They already did a Black Lightning analog with the Ulti-Men episode. Kinda makes you wonder why they didn’t do the same for The Phantom Stranger.
Well that was more of a Super Friends tribute episode, so they did analogues for Black Vulcan (the Hanna-Barbara Super Friends character that was obviously a lot like Black Lightning, but not meant to be the same guy), Apache Chief, Samurai, and Zan and Jayna.
When did you hear this? As I recall, Elongated Man mentions the existance of Plastic Man in the Booster Gold episode. That doesn’t rule him out as being impossible to have him be shown, but it does make him canon. Any idea where you saw this episode?
I’ve read links to several interviews with Timm, I believe mostly on the Toonzone forums. I’m sorry I don’t have direct links to the statements, but this has come up several times on my action figure collector boards, where the topic comes up almost weekly. Blue Beetle is off-limits for the show and any merchandising due to contractual problems stemming back to the Blue Beetle radio show of the early 1940s, and despite appearing on the show, The Question and Captain Atom are off-limits for any JLU merchandising (due to being acquired from Charlton Comics in the mid-'80s). I assume Plastic Man is off-limits due to him having his own cartoon in the '70s.
Well, technically you’re right, as you often are, I think Tony Isabella would vehemently disagree. Did you notice the Black Lightning/Black Vulcan analogue was the only character without a name or dialogue in that episode?
I could’ve sworn he had a name, although I could just be remembering him as “Supervolt” from his Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law appearance. That, and I was too busy marking out over seeing Maxwell Lord in the cartoon series.
**Big Bad. ** Hee hee. Max was fun, though not as slimy as he could be. They need to bring back Maxwell Lord again – and Oberon, and introduce L. Ron and give all those JL-80s era Leaguers walking around doing nothing some lines. Mandy Moore would be a good choice for Ice. Maybe Eva Longawasername from Desperate Housewives as Fire. Hey. I think the actor who does “Frank” on ER might be nice as Guy Gardner. Who could stand in for Blue Beetle and hang with Booster Gold? (What if they brought in Ted Kord without his Blue Beetle costume? Hmm.)
I might end up in a geek coma if they did “One Punch.”
I could have sworn he had dialogue. I remember his voice, at any rate; it had a synthesized quality to it. But I just double-checked and there doesn’t seem to be any corresponding voice credit, so maybe I’m just remembering him laughing at one point.
That character’s name was “Juice”, btw.
I liked this week’s episode. But my DVR came in a little late. How did the govt. lose the Armor?
The witch Tala, seen at the end of the previous episode, is trying unsuccessfully to rid the armor of its built-in weakness. Her disembided mentor, Felix Fuast, advises her on a spell to do so from his enchanted mirror where his soul is emprisoned. But the spell is a trick – Faust is freed from the mirror, Tala takes his place and Faust’s spirit animates the armor. He heads for Themyscira and enters the gates of Tartarus there to take over Hades.
Well, in previous episodes the armor was stolen from the JLU satellite by a government-sponsored gang called the Suicide Squad and Tala has been seen on a “council” of senior government agents with an anti-JLU agenda, so Tala was presumably tasked by them to study the armor.
I imagine they’ll be upset by its loss, but Tala has bigger problems on her plate, like a Windex shortage.
Ok. I missed Tala on the Council last week.
Heck, I really thought she was Sersi…
Thanks.
This was a decent episode. It was the perfect blend of backstory and self-contained action. I complained about last week’s episode being too “insider.” This one was great.
I am so psyched about the upcoming “Question Authority” episode that I could explode. The show’s portrayal of the Question as a cross between Rorschach and Fox Mulder is sheer genius, and I couldn’t be more excited about seeing the conspiracy unfold more.
