Justice League Unlimited 9/17/2005

Double Feature.

“I Am Legion” and “Shadow of the Hawk”.

Wow.

Okay, both titles work on a couple levels.

The first one has Lex getting involved with the Legion of Doom - complete with their secret HQ and all. Lots of villain cameos! Flash gets a lot of great lines. “Hope I think of something before I hit the ground.” “Keys are always in the last place you look.” Blackhawk! A sly reference to Bea’s rleationship with Tora, and, hey, a speaking role for Fire. Spear of Destiny!!

The second one introduces Carter Hall, AKA Katar Hol, AKA Hawkman into JLU continuity, and in a relatively straightforward fashion. Some excellent moments here, too. Hawkgirl gets the good lines. “… BoardS? How many are there?”

I knew that it was going to be the spear of destiny the moment he said “What did they take?”, and frankly, I’m starting to get sick of how much of a cliche it’s starting to become.

People, there were more relics from the middle ages then just the spear of destiny. Fuck, there’s a church out there that claims to have the foreskin of Christ(Holy Pupice, I kid you not). Yeah, it’s disgusting and unlikely, but at least it’s original.

Though I do appreciate he just wanted it for his mantle. That saved it from being totally lame.

Good episodes though. Notice how Hawkgirl never mentions anything about the fact Hawkman is indeed one of her people(or so it appeared?)?

The Spear is important in DCU continuity though, and I hope its appearance here signals a possible Spectre cameo in the days to come.

No, Hawkman’s a human, I think - his wings were strapped on with that harness of his. I assume he constructed them with knowledge gleaned form the Absorbatron. (or whatever they called it - should be Absorbascon.)

Damn, I didn’t realize the new season had started already. And no sunday repeats like they used to have. Blast it!

Holy crap!!! They’re going to Skartaris next week. Sometimes it seems like I’m the only guy who ever cared about that series. And now I can’t talk about it. Too excited. It’s gonna be a long week.

Hey, at least they called it the Spear of Longinus, gives it some class.

I like the Spear. There’s a reason that it comes up again and again. It’s martial, unlike most relics, so you can actually have characters fighting with it. It played an important role in the first crusade, and actually had a connection to Hitler, so unlike the Holy Grail, it’s historical, rather than merely mythic. And hey, it killed Jesus, it killed God! (He got better) You cannot get better symbolism than that!

Actually, it was only used to verify that Jesus was already dead.

When i saw them on my Tivo list, I thought they were reruns. Then I started watching them. I took Lex’s reference to having Brainiac in him that made me realize this was new.

I enjoyed both episodes. yes, I had the fanboy thrill of seeing the different villains in the Hall of Doom, I mean, Grodd’s headquarters.

The only thing I would have liked more is more cameo’s by actual Legion of Doom members. There were Grodd, Luthor and Brainiac, and I know I saw Sinestro, and I think I saw Bizarro. But that’s all I spied.

Giganta did show up in the second ep though.

Things we will be seeing this season according to Tv.com. Not very spoilerish, but just to be sure.

Skataris and Warlord, The Viking Prince, Deadman and The Flash Museum

Oh, and great episodes, both of them. I especially enjoyed how they left Hawkman’s sanity an open question, and how Batman’s playing both sides of the Shiera/Jon conflict.

There’s some specualtion that it gave the killing blow.

I think Star Sapphire was flying next to Sinestro.

Same here. I missed the first ten minutes of the first ep. Could someone sum up what I missed? I came in where Wally and Shayera were talking about Fire.

(Paraphased)
-So you dropped him?
-He told me to! He’s one of the founding members of the League.
-You know he can’t fly, right?

Here’s what I remember :
It opens with Lex fleeing from the cops in a hijacked prison vehicle. He makes several comments to someone invisible ( Brainiac as it turned out ). The truck crashes and he’s cornered by the cops; then somebody phases through the wall and grabs him. He’s taken to Grodd’s headquarters.

Luthor is depressed and unwilling to work for Grodd - or even himself. He feels he was a near god, and lost it when Brainiac was destroyed. Grodd comments that not a single piece of Brainiac remains on Earth - “except for this one”. Grodd tells Lex that if he does what he wants, he’ll hand him the Braniac bit.

Meanwhile the last of the Blackbirds gets a remote alarm that his groups old island armory is being raided and calls the JL. Flash is mopeing after Fire ( who’s talking to another woman ), but reluctant to ask her out. Shayera comments “It probably wouldn’t work anyway, she’s a…you know…”. Flash looks at Fire with mingled shock and disappointment, and Shayera continues “Brazilian.”

Flash, Fire and Shayera fly to the island, with a little flirting between Flash and Fire ( assisted by a little “turbulence” created by Sayera’s piloting; Fire falls in his lap. Suddenly they are attacked by a giant robot bird and the Javelin is wrecked. They fight it until the last Blackbird shows up in his plane and blows it away.
HAWKA-AAA!
Nice show of the old Blackhawk uniforms, too.
“Good times, good times.”
Was that Charro doing Fire’s voice?

There was no voice credit for Fire.

Cute!! They decided to use the same Hall of Dome and Hall of Justice as the Superfriends.

I liked both episodes. Solid entertainment.

A few comments:

 • I was disappointed in the War Wheel in the Legion episode. I have always loved the concept of the War Wheel and was hoping to see one. But The War Wheel is supposed to be HUGE. Like “destroy a city” huge. Was there one in the Time Travel episode that was alluded to in this episode?

 • JLU is the first cartoon where I have ever noticed the presence of a director. They have many nice shots. One weakness I find is sometimes the voice casting is terrible. Grodd, who has appeared before, sounds like a normal guy. Shouldn’t he sound menacing and animal like?

 • I loved seeing Lord Havoc and company. A nice touch. The guy who did the voice for Bender provided the voice for Dream-whats-his-name (also poor voice casting, but I love Bender, so I like to see him get work!).

 • There is a cliche in superhero storytelling: the convenient failure to use superspeed. Couldn’t Flash have removed the gun from Lex’s hand and saved the Blackhawk?

 • Once again, I LOVE Batman in this series.

 • I don’t mean to come off as a prude, but I really disliked the bawdy moment between Hawkgirl and Carter Hall.

“I miss the dress.”
“You didn’t miss it last night!”
(Camera follows his line of sight to a close up of Hawkgirl’s ass)

Now I have no problem seeing Hawkgirl’s animated ass. Hell, I am in a 12 step program to help me get over my Lois Griffin (FG)/Amy Wong (Futurama) three way fantasy.

But this show shouldn’t have adult situations in it. My kid loves that show. Why can’t Superman and Pals be a family friendly show? That was just inappropriate.

It went over my head and I’m 23. I’d say it was subtle enough to keep in.

The line was probably ok. But they compounded the problem showing a close up of her ass.

Is it just me or was Supes written to be over the top nice? Maybe it is to get away from the Cadmus/Luthor attitude, but he wasn’t a dick.
And was Flash changed as well? He had been some form of comic relief, but he just seemed like a loser when it came to dealing with Fire. He had never had any problems hitting on the ladies before. Perhaps it is setting up the upcoming Flash Museum episode.

Well, after getting sucked into the Speed Force last season, he was afraid of moving too fast.
