Justice League 2/19/05 (open spoilers)

Doomsday’s back and he and Superman throw down inside an active volcano.

The government’s got a secret plan to wipe out the Justice League. Lex Luthor announces plan to run for president (via commericals on background TVs). Batman pulls a Jack Bauer in stopping a nuclear/kryptonite missile aimed at Superman.

Too much action for a single-parter, IMHO.

I couldn’t have cared less about another Superman-centered brawl, but I loved everything else about the episode: the parallel round table meetings, Bats confronting Amanda Waller in the shower, crazy General Eiling launching the missile, the League assisting in a large-scale evacuation, the collective groan over the Question’s involvement, and Batman’s righteous tirade at the end, setting up more conflict and more subplots to come (President Luthor, the Suicide Squad, etc.) Good episode, all in all.

Cool.

And I want that anti-metahuman Tomahawk. (Double  )

Though I thought Batman’s tirade seemed a little forced…OTOH, it’s possible that Bruce was lashing out because he was unnerved, even scared. After all, he does know Clark/Superman…and that if it ever comes around that he has to kill president Luthor, and all that would come afterwards, it might actually be the best and the “right” thing to do.

I liked the set up of things to come. I just wished that they hadn’t dealt with Doomsday in such a half assed fashion. Seemed to me that they just used him to set up the speech at the end.

Sigh. I missed it!

Grrrrr.

I guess they’ll re-run it eventually…

Did you see the ‘Justice Lords’ episode of Justice League last year?

That was the first episode I’ve seen in quite a while, so I didn’t know what they were talking about with that whole Justice Lords business.

Synopsis

They mentioned the question. They mentioned the question. They mentioned the question. Whua-pa! AND Hu-ray!

Hurm.

[Original 7 JLers]Groan.[/O7JL]

I did. And, as I recall…
…(alternate) President Luthor was about to push “the button” and barbecue the planet, when (alternate) Superman killed him.

Yeah, the “Justice Lords” took over the world after that. But, otherwise, the world might have ended up as glowing pieces of “Earthite.”

By the way…do we have any idea if they called themselves “Justice Lords” before or after they killed Luthor? Alternate Batman’s dialogue seemed to indicate that they’d always been “Lords,” which might reflect a subtle but significant difference in their personas…
Scott blurts out “http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/5636/HubCity/opening.htm” ,then notices that Lou is wearing a trenchcoat and a full faced mask covered with a slowly shifting rosach pattern and slowly backs away.

Awesome website, thanks for the link. I never read any of the '80s Question series and I’ve been waiting for the TPB of the current one, but I’ve always liked the character a lot. The fact that he’s friends with Blue Beetle (my favorite superhero) and the ties to Watchmen they both have make them even cooler, IMO. I think if done right, The Question could make a great live-action TV series or movie.

Good episode.

Got two identity questions.

First, was that Dr. Sivana sitting in with Waller, Eiling and Milo?

Also, who was that walking with Wildcat and Obsidion when Batman came running through. Was that the Hourman from One Million?

One character who’s had quite a bit of screen time, but no lines is Nemesis. It’s always seemed odd to me that he was there. He was always more of a secretive type. But I wonder, with the whole Amanda Waller thing, if he’s a plant for the Suicide Squad. It would be really cool if they’re thinking that far ahead.

No, Dr. Hugo Strange, a Batman villain who learned Batman’s secret identity during Batman: The Animated Series (presumably why Waller knew.)

Yep.

Bruce Timm said in an interview that they had a list of characters they were allowed to use for the cartoon, and Nemesis was just a left-over, after they chose everyone they wanted and weren’t allowed a few others they wanted more.

I think so.

I think that was Rick Tyler, Hourman II, (the android from the 853rd century is Hourman III), who in the comics is currently in the JSA with Wildcat and served with Obsidian in… um… Infinity Inc. (the one made up primary of the children of JSAers)? He had cancer, but Hourman III cured him with future science before leaving our time for the future.

Does he wear a costume like Hourman III now?

It’s been years since I read comics regularly, I only remember him wearing a costume like the original and a really stupid one with a clock on the front.

Actually, Pres. Luthor was about to blow up the planet and Superman stopped him by melting the trigger in his hand. Luthor then surrendered but mocked Superman about how it wasn’t going to matter since he’d get off and walk away unscathed to try again. Superman gives a remark along the lines of “Not this time” and then they cut to Wonder Woman saying to Batman “Do you smell something burning?”

There have been a lot of weak episodes with the new format; it was like they used the left over crappy scripts from season 1 that they couldn’t stretch into an hour. But lately its all been fairly fun romps with tons of stuff tossed in for the old comic book. And lots of developing plot lines.

I thought Waller didn’t come off as well as she did the previous time that she showed up. Probably because she was shown as not really being in control of things.

:dubious:
Are you sure about that? I’m pretty sure that-

Supes walked into the Oval Office—making some reference (I think) to “the people” and Luthor responds with “The ‘little people’…this is their fault. And they’re going to burn for it. BURN!”—and Luthor holds him back by opening up the drawer with “the button” in it. Supes pauses, and says “there are about six different ways I could take you down from here…”

Luthor cuts him off with “…but they all involve lethal force, and you don’t ‘do’ that.”

After which Luthor comments something like that, in a way, Superman has always been his most reliable accomplice. Because, after his plots fail, Supes always hauls him safely to jail, where he was free to start again, and Supes got to think of himself as a hero for it. And that this time would be no different—if he didn’t “win” today, he’d just do it again tomorrow.

Alternate supes pauses, and says “I did love being a hero…but if this is where it leads, I’m through with it.” He faces the “camera” (Luthor’s POV), his eyes start blazing—cut to Bats and Wonder Woman, and the “What’s that smell?” line.

And, oddly enough, Wonder Woman, the “rookie,” seemed to recognize the scent of burning human flesh before Batman did.
That’s all from memory, but I think I got the major points.

I’ve got to record that one, next time it’s on…
