Yea, I’m not really sure what Webb and Chaffee are doing. I like Webb, and sort of admire him for not moving to the left to make himself more palatable to Dem primary voters, but on the other hand, if he’s not going to do so, then I’m not sure why he’s bothering with this Presidential run.
Anyhoo, Hillary did well, as one would expect (she already did like 100 of these things eight years ago). O’Malley reminded the world that he exists and did well enough to make him a plausible alternate if Hillary implodes (I doubt he’ll be VP though, not because of any personal fault, but just because he doesn’t really add much to a Clinton ticket).
Bernie came across like the gadfly Senator he is. He’s good at it, but its not really a role that translates well to being Prez.
Oh I don’t think O’Malley will be chosen as her VP … just that he seems to be more running for that than for the nomination. And that his close was a very good audition.
Yeah. That was pretty awful.
So obviously scripted.
Yeah, he’s kinda out there. I think he totally lost the race when the cut to him and he basically went, “Huh? Oh,… uh… Wha?”
There are no winners.
Too bad the other 3 candidates didn’t get a chance to say anything. I was going to make a thread about this just being a commercial for Hillary but deleted it before posting. What a waste of fucking time.
Webb’s tie was too tight and a bad color.
I first encountered Lincoln Chafee on the bill maher show, and thought he was the DEFINITION of milquetoast (milk toast makes even more sense as that seems like the original comparison).
Ineffectual, nebbish, weak dealing little shadow of a man. Watch here:

His basic attitude to conflict is to run and hide from controversy.
IMHO Hillary clearly appeared presidential. She had the answers and the attitude. Bernie did better than I thought he would, but he doesn’t quite have that presidential flair. I did like his comments on Hillary’s emails. He nailed that on the head. I put the debate in that order, Hillary, Bernie, as first and second, and the others tied for last.
Sure they can; the combined poll support of all the declared candidates, plus Biden too, is well under 100%.
Bernie said that he tried marijuana and it didn’t work for him. Chafee looked like it works really really well for him.
I just got in from a debate watch party.
I think Clinton and Sanders did best,
Webb was on the wrong stage,
and Chafee…
well, his attempt to explain that one vote…
“it was my very first vote”…
“my father died”…
let’s just say it wasn’t exactly Presidential.
Am I the only one who thought Webb looked like his tie was strangling him, and he was constipated at the same time?
Chafee looked pretty bad. Sort of like Grandpa from the Munsters. I think he’ll be dropping out pretty soon.
I agree. For all the failings of Webb and Chafee, this was a group of people who were discussing issues rather than stirring up fear of Muslims, blacks, gays, etc.
Yes, but Webb looked like his head was about to burst.
My understanding is that neither he nor Webb have really done much in the way of campaigning or hiring staff, etc. So they don’t really seem to be running to win in the first place. As such, its kind of hard to say what would cause them to drop out.
Yes, this was a debate by grownups.
This may be the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Every one except Webb was trying to “out Bernie” Bernie Sanders. I’m surprised Clinton was giving thrift to his type of anti-market nonsense. She seemed a little desperate. I haven’t paid attention to her campaign, is she churning out this sort of stuff regularly? If I was a Democrat I would be worried after this debate simply because she was hamming it up so much. I guess it probably won’t matter anyway.
Sanders confirmed he is simply out to lunch.
Webb showed courage. He is an iconoclast. I wish him well.
I was glad Omalley got taken to task on his despicable war on blacks in Baltimore. He lacked the courage that a Lilly white Republican with cancer had to close the cesspool on Eager st., BCDC.
I feel you were watching a very different debate than I was.
Webb’s military and national service is heroic and of course appreciated.
His performance tonight in front of a national audience showed him ill prepared for a serious attempt to gain the nomination of today’s Democratic Party.
Never said he would win. I said he showed courage, he did. I said he was an iconoclast, he is. To win the nomination of the Democratic Party, courage would not be an asset. You need to reassure the disparate elements of your electorate that they are being victimized, and that their problems, including mundane problems like school tuition and unfathomable “problems” like climate change, can be solved by the strong arm of the govt.
I think it’s more that he’s running for “next”. With the Democratic bench so thin, no one running in 2020(if the Dems lose) or 2024 is going to be someone who is a big name. So we’re probably going to see a large number of well qualified but relatively unknown candidates to the majority of Democrats. By running now, O’Malley gets name recognition before guys like Cory Booker. Unless Cory Booker is the VP choice, of course.
As for Webb, every liberal here owes that man big for bringing the Democrats the Senate in 2006. He was the most high profile candidate running that year and arguably without him the Democrats might not have won that election. So nod appreciatively and respectfully when he talks and then vote for whoever you want, but to say he doesn’t belong in the party is just insulting given what he’s done for the party. And like it or not, the party still needs the kind of voters who like Webb inside the Democratic Party to have a prayer at forming majorities.
Regarding Jim Webb, he was actually second in Google searches to Sanders during the debate:
