Sign me up for the same, except mine is a M1917 in 30-06.
I think it’s somewhere around 7 pounds, without accounting for the scope. I have packed that thing in (on my own two feet and horseback) farther than I care to remember on some of the most exhausting trips of my life, and believe me, I appreciate every ounce saved!
If Bobotheoptimist (1903 Springfield) and Dag Otto (M1917) are game, I’ll join the military/service rifle competition with my (as-issued) M1 Garand in 30-06.
I checked the rules page but I don’t see very many details. Since we can’t monitor it, I would guess we would allow unlimited sighting shots? I can’t have someone pull and mark the target after each shot am I allowed to check my hits with a spotting scope between each shot?
I really don’t want to clutter this up with a bunch of rules. I just want to make sure I’m not doing anything that would give me an unfair advantage.
I’m still undecided between my Garand or my Swedish Mauser. But I would think sighting shots should be unlimited. They’ll have to be, because I haven’t fired the Mauser in a year or more. Who knows what the sights have done in that time?
Cool, another Swede Mauser owner!
Is yours an M96 or an M38?
It’s at least a week before I can get to the range, so cluttering up the thread is all I have right now
Not many details at all, I’m not expecting witnesses or video or anything, no real point in cheating. Checking your shots with a spotting scope is SOP. If you *want *rules check out the John Garand Service Rifle match. I think we’re going for standing, 100 yard, iron sights. Much more would be pointless to get fret about (not going to stop me or anything). Mr Enfield and I getting worked up over targets and other minutia should probably be ignored, I’m likely to argue with him just because I’m bored (he’s a great guy & I’m fairly sure he knows that I’m just kidding)
I’m planning on fine-tuning my rifle first (on sandbags) since I’m going to use it this hunting season; but the target I submit will be 20 rounds standing, fired in one session of 10 minutes, 10 minute break, 10 minutes (because of range standards).
[QUOTE=Martini Enfield]
You don’t see many of the light barreled hunting rifles here- the trend seems to be towards the heavy barreled ones. How much does your Mountain Rifle weigh? I imagine it’s a lot more comfortable to carry than a 9.5lb Lee-Enfield!
[QUOTE]
I’m a bit of a weirdo in my hunting group as I carry a wood stocked normal or heavy barrel, tipping 12 pounds for my .308, but most of them carry 6-7 pound fibreglass stocked light barreled. Wimps! Makes sense if you do much hiking, tho. I’ve never seen one of fire more than twice on a trip so a varmint barrel wouldn’t help much.
I was planning on getting a mountain rifle in .308, something light and weatherproof. Instead I got a wood No.1, so I’m still in the market for a hunting rifle. My wife just  at me!
Power went out during a thunderstorm, so I didn’t get the site updated (spent too long screwing around on the board when power came back)
Ignoring the obvious coding problems, looks like sentence coherent are words missing.
Bed, must to bed…
Heh, yeah, Bob, I knew you were just messing with me about the targets etc. Hell, I’d be happy to shoot at Coca-Cola cans if the range rules allowed it, but they’re boring and won’t let me. I’m not allowed to shoot at the range with a bayonet fixed either. Bastards.
When you say No 1, are you referring to a Ruger No 1 (which is a very nice rifle indeed!), or a Lee-Enfield No 1 Mk III (AKA SMLE Mk III)?
M/96. Mine’s dated 1906.
Enfield - Ruger No.1 S medium sporter .300 Winchester Magnum. Alexander Henry forestock, iron sights (although it has a scope I’m into redundancy). The caliber is major overkill in my opinion, but I didn’t see any point in having the strongest action on the market and chambering it in .308. Besides, now I can reach out past where the .308 starts getting overly flakey.
Can’t find a picture… Weird.
Always gets attention at camp and the range, and I like to gently needle anyone hunting with an autoloader. “Humph, got me this little one-shot deal… Don’t figure I’ll be takin’ on Rommel, just tryin’ to get me an animal. Everyone has their own ways, but I reckon you shoot im where he lives and one shot should do 'er fer ya.”
Yes, it is worth losing one occasionally.
I suppose I could enter my two handguns.
The first one is a GLOCK 27, .40 S&W. The second is a SIG SAUER P239 in 357SIG. I’ll check up on the rules, wait a few weeks until the finances improve, and then find the time to shoot. Other than that I’m in.
That’s OK, the last time my friends and I were at the range, we all took Lee-Enfields, and the RO directed the next shooter who came along to take up the bay “Next to the guys re-enacting the Battle of the Somme”
The Ruger No 1 is a very nice gun indeed… I don’t know if I’d want one in Winchester .300 Magnum (Mutters under breath about “newfangled calibres” and how a .303 was good enough for the British Empire, so it should be good enough for everyone else ), but I’ve played with one at the local gunshop… I can hear the call of the Dark Side, but I must resist!
Silenus, that’s a very nice Swede you’ve got there! Mine’s an M38, more specifically dated 1943 with the turned down bolt. A friend of mine has a 1916 dated Carl Gustaf on lay-by, with the straight bolt and an immaculate bore…
I wanted the “1000 yard calibre .300 H&H Magnum”, but settled for .300 WM because of availability.
Technophobe… The WinMag is 43 years old, hardly ancient but well established. (mutters about people stuck on modified black powder rounds… British Empire forsooth! <ahem> Isandlwana <ahem>)
If I wasn’t afraid of the thing, I’d pull out my 7.35 Terni Carcano, but 70 year old ammo is all I have for it

OK, here I go. I’m going to go scare up some targets today after work (ATF shut down our local place last week!) and I’m taking the kids camping this weekend. Which should make it interesting, but I’m bringing the pellet and BB guns for them too.
How did I miss this thread…I wanna play too
Revolver…686 s&w 357mag 6"
Rifle rim…ruger .22
Rifle centre…SMLE No1 Mk111
Well, crap. Nowhere within this blighted county are there 100 yard rifle targets to be found.
Giant targets shaped like bad guys? Sure. (And also like rabbits. Easter Bunny target practice? You have to wonder.)
Funny square sighting-in things in red? Plenty.
Assorted stick-ums for your bang-em-up pleasure? Come on down!
Plain ol’ round rifle targets? Nada.
So I’m going to have to mail order mine, which means that I won’t be getting it done this weekend. We’ll still plink though, and now I won’t have to go out of camp to do it.
See? You ought to have gone to Montana or North Dakota, and avoided the whole problem. Plenty of open land out there to set up whatever yer little heart desires.
As for me, I’m still looking around. As if I were one to speak, eh! :smack:
Tripler
Yes, I’m now in Georgia. But I will still use the word “eh!”, eh!
You realise I have to ask you what sort of SMLE Mk III* rifle you have, right? What year it was made, who made it, etc etc…
