I’m sitting within a couple hundred feet of that pond right now.
When I heard about this, it made me want to cry. All my time at this college, the koi pond has been a place sit for a few moments and take a break from my busy life. I always thought it was pretty special that we could have such beautiful fish out in public and everyone always treated them well. The koi pond has always been a little special corner of campus. But now it is more of a blot. I can’t believe the fuckers ruined the koi pond for me, and so many others.
I’ll grant you the theft, but not the cruelty. What is cruel about eating a fish? No doubt the guys are grade A assholes, but I don’t see any crulety to animals here, unless they tortured it or something. It was just a fish, a nice friendly fish, but just a fish.

No, I don’t think that is cruel, at least no more cruel than getting a hook through the jaw and then suffocated to death the way many fish die.
I think you sort of have to take it for granted that any animal living on campus is living under a suspended sentence. Although for this to have been a true frat stunt, they would have had to swallow Goldie whole and alive.

This is so bizarre. I can’t believe MTV filmed about fraternities at Santa Cruz. WTF?
When I graduated from UCSC in 2000, there were 4 sororities and 6 fraternities. (I think 8 of these organizations were specifically for Asians, too. They seemed to be pretty much ethnic organizations wearing Greek letters. It all looked pretty pointless.) Those numbers may have changed, but I know that this hasn’t: there is no Greek housing on campus. Greek life is non-existant. No one cares about fraternities or sororities. Being in the gamelan ensemble or playing intramural ultimate frisbee is way cooler than being in a frat at UCSC.
These guys are morons. No self-respecting Banana Slug would join a fraternity, and these guys prove it. I bet they’re College Eight students.

For some reason I read the title and imagined Goldie to be a dog…I am actually kind of relieved that it was only a fish, although the guys are total morons for having done what they did.
Still, at least Goldie wasn’t a dog…
