2006 Weight loss Club - November

Baby’s second birthday was on Saturday, and I put on a spread for 12 people. I am pleased to say that my weight loss is still on track.

No weight lost this week, but none gained. I attribute this to less aerobic exercise (physical therapy takes an hour and it’s cutting into my work and exercise time) and my son’s 5th birthday was Sunday, and that meant PIZZA (2 slices!) Ah well, nothing gained.

Well I certainly fell right off the wagon. Did well for 3 weeks, lost 7 pounds, then my jab situation changed drastically, I became very depressed, and bingo! Nothing cheers one up like pizza & wine with Ben & Jerry’s chaser. So, gained back the 7 lbs.

However, as of today, my job situation is changing drastically again, this time for the better. I’m kicking the accounting habit, and with it hopefully the mid-life depression that has helped me to stop caring and try to make it all better with food. Plus, the new job will be physically active instead of forcing me into a chair for 8-10 hours at a time.

So, my resolve is strengthening and in spite of the holidays, I hope to be on the road to my inner Kirstie Ally (the After shot).

Thanks for keeping this thread alive. Every time I see it I’ll feel guilty for having dirty thoughts involving Papa Murphy and will stay virtuous.

Sorry to hear some of you are having a hard time of it this week. I have some good news to share. All my hard work finally seems to be paying off. Saturday morning I stepped on the scale to find that I’m down to 180. That’s down five pounds since I started participating here and down 10 from where I started. Yay! My goal was to be down to 175 by Christmas so at this rate I just might make it.

Weighed 265# on Friday, November 10th…down 4# from Nov. 1st. Had some Tri-tip and Cabernet that night, and some T-Bone and Merlot last night…hmmmmm. I hope I didn’t go back up too much.

Good job, yellowval!

I weighed in at 181 this morning. I swear, I’m never, ever going to hit my goal weight. I lost so quickly when I first started; and now that I’m so close (relative to where I began), it’s like a damned snail’s pace. My diet and exercise regimen is still pretty strict, so I don’t know what’s causing it.

Calorie Intake Equations - As you lose weight, your calorie intake has to reduce as well to keep the rate of loss consistent. The same holds true with exercise; you have to increase the duration of the exercise to burn the same number of calories. When I punch in my weight on the elliptical machine, I noticed that after I lost 40 pounds, I had to increase the length of time to obtain the target number of calories burned for that session. That’s why the last pound seems to be the hardest.

I found this somewhat helpful…The 100 Smartest Diet Tips Ever

266# yesterday for a no-holds barred weekend of steak and wine.

Maintainer checking in.

My mom just came for a visit and it was a non stop 4 day decadent event. We had sushi, we had Moroccan food (including phyllo dough and powdered sugar), we had chevre with cherry jelly on gourmet cranberry/hazelnut crackers, chocolate cake, wine, coffee with cream, topped off with an elegant meal at one of the nicest restaurants in the Seattle area (Salish Lodge).

On a daily basis, I have no problem at all avoiding “normal bad” foods like pizza and hotdogs and fast food and candy. My big weakness is “special occasions.” I can justify anything if there is a good enough reason (ie Mom’s birthday visit) to justify it. If she had stayed for a week or 2 weeks, I wonder how long I would have kept up the hedonistic, anything goes food intake?

I dropped Mom off at the aiport yesterday and immediately went to the grocery store and bought stuff for healthy lunch/dinner/break/fast/snacks for the week. Last night, I made a huge pot of leek/spinach/tomato/chickpea soup. This morning, I made salads to take to lunch for the rest of the week and cut up vegetables for snacks. I am back on track!

I tend to beat myself up and angst over things. I have to remember that life is complicated and special occasions do need something special sometimes. I don’t eat like this on a regular basis and 4 days is okay. So far so good, my jeans are still fitting the same!

Not having a good week…didn’t weigh in on Saturday because of the holiday. Which was probably just as well. I’m on a new prescription, and one of the side effects is increase in appetite and weight gain. So I’ve been eating more than I should for the last few days. I’m trying to work it so that I’ve got points left when the cravings hit in the evening.

Not looking forward to weigh in this Saturday… :frowning:

Would it work to increase the resistance level, but keep the amount of time the same? It seems like it would, but what the heck do I know. My time on the elliptical has decreased because I have to add my physical therapy exercises into the mix and I have a limited amount of time. If I increased the resistance somewhat, I’m guessing I would be able to burn the same amount of calories, even with the shortened time period. Or am I just wishing?

Sure, you can increase the resistance level to burn more calories, but the trick is to maintain the same RPMs on the higher resistence level. Takes some getting used to, since you’ll probably get a little more tired at the end and your RPMs start dropping off…but after a few sessions, you might be able to keep it up for the whole workout. I find it useful to start at the higher resistance at the beginning and then scale it back to the old resistance halfway through the workout.

I was off on training the last 2 days, with lunch included. There was a huge buffet lunch - you could technically have had a million visits to refill on roast meat and potatoes etc. However, on the first day I had a small salad for starters followed by half a plate of mixed vegetables with a piece of salmon. When I went home, I had about a quarter of my usual dinner (more lunch sized portion).

The next day I had melon to start, baked cod with a half plate of mixed vegetables and a small bowl of unsweetened fruit salad afterwards. At home, I had a small soup bowl of vegetables from the casserole my husband cooked. I think I did pretty well - especially considering that I could have had pate, creamed soup, roast beef with all the trimmings, roast potatoes, vegetables in a cream sauce and a choice of 6 types of cake (most people has at least 2 slices!).

However, we’ll see at the end of the month how I fared!

I have upped my resistance level on the machines I do by upping them for a few minutes then reducing them, then upping them for a longer time, then reducing back to what I was used to … I keep doing this until I get more able to do the higher resistance level for the whole workout (all the while trying to keep to the same rhythm). On the ellipitcial trainer, I also increase the steepness of the steps, meaning I have to take a longer step and push harder to achieve the same effect (I’m not sure how well I’m explaining this). Anyway, the end result is some form of interval training, all the while working towards the goal of increasing the resistance. Once I get more used to the higher level, I think that I should push it up a notch again. The resistance level on the machine I use goes to 20 max and I’m pushing it up from 14 to 15 now.

And boy, do I sweat!!!

Hello fellow losers! I ran in the Richmond Marathon 8k last weekend. I was holding off on saying anything because they post pics of the runners online, but for some reason they have not shown up yet. When they do I will post a pic of me from June of this year and one from raceday.

My goal was to finish in 60 minutes. I finished in 54:27.

For those who don’t know, in a race with thousands of people you start in in different corrals. So the race clock starts and the first (fastest) group goes. So some don’t even get to the starting line for 10 minutes, so the race clock is not accurate for anyone not in the first corral.

So a few minutes into my run I realize I did not set my timer on my watch. My pacing was screwed!! At the mile markers I had no way of knowing if I was on pace or not for 60 minutes.

My family was in the crowd cheering when I approached the finish line. They were so supportive even though the race clock said 1:01 when I finished. They thought I would be upset, because they did not know the clock was not accurate for everyone. I was THRILED when the official results had me at 54:27!!

I weighed in today at 191.1. That is 39.9 pounds down! OVER HALF WAY THERE!! I have realized that the weight is coming off slower than it used to…

Congratulations newcrasher , that is pretty big news.

Congratulations on the marathon, newcrasher! I have great respect for anyone who can do that. (Because I know I never could.)

Congratulations, newscrasher! I was toying with the idea of doing a 5 miler in December, but I don’t know if I’d be ready to do it by then; also, my knee hates damp, and winter in Maryland means wet. They have really freakin’ cool race shirts, though.

The kewl thing about races like these is that the crowd cheers the person who walks the race in an hour and a half the same way they cheer the guy who does it in 28 minutes. I would suggest you give it a shot, even if you just walk. W

When you wear the T-shirt and people ask you about it, you can say, “yeah, I did the 8k in December”. It is a really good feeling. And don’t us folks with a few pounds to shed need affirmation and warm fuzzies whenever we can get them?

OK, I’m in. Two weeks ago, I weighed the most I’ve ever been. 205 lbs. I’m 6’, but it’s going in the wrong direction.

I’ve lost weight since then, and I’m about 196. I want to be around 185 so I’ve got about 11 lb to go. Giving up beer helped.

I’ve started running and have found out that a 45-year-old body doesn’t move the same as a younger one.

OK here is me after the race…
And here is me in June in El Salvador…eating of course… I am in blue second from the right.

Photos should work…yell if they don’t…
