Woo! About to break that damned 300 lb barrier, and last night I finally did ten good pushups. I’ve done ten crappy pushups before, but these are slow down, slow up, straight posture etc. W00t.

75 down today and think I might get myself a professional massage for the first time in my life as a reward ;0).
APPLAUSE
Good for you!
Congratulations! Good for you. Rewards are good for the soul and for the motivation.
Improv Geek, way to go! That is huge. I have been lifting all year and the more I lose the more I see the results in my shoulders and arms. And now I think I can see some good results in the chest area as well. It is frustrating for me because due to some health issues I must lift light and I always want to go heavier.

I hosted the Jersey DopeFest Yesterday and despite over-eating, I still weighed 199.5 this morning. I have managed to stay under 200 for 5 days now.
I know my over eating was countered by the exercise I got just cleaning, prepping, cooking and cleaning again. Now I have to see where next week takes me. Hopefully downward.
I promised my daughter we would take as many bike rides as possible this week while the evening still have some daylight left. Once it gets too dark by 6pm, I will have to look into buying some sort of exercise machine.
I am leaning towards a rowing machine, I like to row, and I do not really like treadmills.
What are other posters experiences with various exercise machines?
Jim
Jim, my friend, you are solidly below 200, and congratulations for that!
I had a treadmill that I used about eight times in the two years we owned it. I just sold it. However, since I have a gym membership, that’s where I go to exercise and I have a wide variety of machines to choose from. I prefer the elliptical machine to the treadmill, easier on my old knees; The stair thingie (where your feet stay on the pedals, not where you step each time) is also low-impact.
Whatever it is that you decide upon, see if there’s an in-home trial. You don’t want to be stuck with a gigantic clothes-hanger.
Thanks for the 'grats everyone, it does feel really, really good.
As far as exercise machines go, I bought myself an elliptical from Sears in February, and use it about five times a week. It’s held up really well so far, and it’s easy on my knees. It’s got a 1-10 resistance scale, so I can turn up the resistance to get an intense workout, or go light and long. You can also pedal backwards, a little like running backwards, which works an entirely different set of muscles and really kicks my butt. I really like it. I also bought a set of handweights and an elastic exercise band which gives me resistance and weight training benefits, so I mix that in and get an all-around very good workout.
I find that I bore myself to tears on a treadmill and feel like a cow when I’m running, so the elliptical is great for me.
When I used to go to the gym (sigh) I loved the elliptical trainers - I like to do the “two mountains” pattern for ten minutes and then repeat it, because then the “steps” go by fast enough that you don’t get bored, and if it gets really hard you know that soon soon soon it’ll change it up. Do it backwards too much the first time and you won’t be able to bend yourself into a chair for a day, FYI, you’ll have to just position yourself above it and fall back.
OK, I’ve decided to try this again.
I inserted a post into one of the weight loss threads a while ago. A year, maybe? I can’t remember. But then dropped out and never made any effort at weight loss.
I am 36, 5’ 4" and 167 pounds.
I was chunky in junior high but for the rest of my life, until about the age of 25, I was not overweight.
My weight gain came from eating too much restaurant food (I have a real weakness for Chinese food, Indian food and Thai food), not exercising and drinking too much beer. Basically, high calorie living which was not offset by physical activity.
I love to cook and am good at planning menus for a week at a time, so I was successful on Weight Watchers between November 2001 and May 2002. I lost 35 pounds (went from 175 to 140) and was able to keep off the weight until fairly recenly, when I have crept back up to 167.
I know exactly why I’ve put weight back on - I have been relying on take out & convenience foods a lot because I’ve been really busy at work and felt too tired to cook every night or too tired to stick to a planned menu and have been “winging it” way too much, which always involves more cheese & fat than if I cook what I plan.
I need to find motivation to exercise, but I’ve been looking for that for 10 years now, so that might be a lost cause. One of my real pleasures in life is reading, whcih I will choose above any other activity. Sigh.
I am now officially back on Weight Watchers (I swear this time it’s true) and declaring my intentions.
I want to lose weight because:
I don’t want to feel tired all the time.
I don’t want to have to buy new clothes!
I want to reduce the wear and tear on my already genetically-doomed joints.
First mini-goal is 5 pounds by Columbus Day weekend. I’m trying for 2 pounds this week (realistic since everyone seems to post a big loss their first full week on WW) and then 1.5 pounds each week after that.
How I will achieve my mini-goal:
Control my portion sizes
Substitute whole grains wherever possible
Eat two pieces of fruit a day (3 points - not a big point sacrifice, and full of vitamins & fiber!)
Eat breakfast
Exercise for 15 minutes 2 times this week, 3 times next week, 4 times the week after that.
Not carry any cash, so I can’t visit the vending machine.
Pack something really tasty for lunch on Thursday so I won’t order Thai food with the Thai food club.
Post here at least every other day to remind myself what I’m doing.
Welcome Motorgirl. Good luck with your losing.
Thanks. I strive to be a big loser.
I ought to get my menu plan web site back up - it helped me before to keep my eating habits public.
That would be cool to see, and it’d be helpful for others new to WW who don’t have a clue.
More motivation, thanks!
I’ll see what I can knock out this week.
Oh, I’d love to see that! I enjoy cooking, but I’m not a very good planner - I know women who go to the store on Saturday and don’t have to go again until the next Saturday, and they don’t throw anything out. I don’t know how they do it.
You are SUCH A LOSER!!!
Good luck and welcome. I have been doing weight watchers for a coupla months now with great success.
You can do it! Keep us posted!!
I weighed in today and lost 1.7 pounds. That puts me at 208.3.
Thanks!
Good job on the 1.7. Keep up the good work!
Hi all - I think I last posted in the July weight loss thread (I was here as **cb_ire ** then but have resubscribed under my old ID of Honeydew ) but after my holidays (vacation) and being ill for a week, really got back into the whole weight loss thing.
Holidays were fine, I took my portable stepper with me and weights and did both for an hour a day. Which was fine for the first 2 weeks, but I got so BORED!!! Also, the stepper began to really hurt my knee (I guess too much of one thing is bad for you after all!) so I didn’t do any set exercise for a week. We did go walking and that sort of stuff but nothing definite and planned. Then when I got back, I found out that my gym had closed down so had to find another. In the meantime, I got a bout of severe gastro enteritis so I was off sick for a week and didn’t eat anything for two days. Eventually, when I found a new gym (very close by) I weighed myself and I’d lost 1 lb in the whole month! Which I think is pretty good seeing as we had Chinese food, Thai food, cake, chocolate, ice cream, nachos etc during the three weeks I was away! (That said, we did eat a lot of very healthy food - we love fruit and veg and fish). I’m pretty happy with that.
I’ll weigh myself again on Thursday week (27th I think) and see how well I’ve done this month. I think it’s ok, everybody is noticing that I’ve lost weight which is pretty cool. Also I got my almost waist length hair cut short before holidays and, when I got back to work, between that change and the weight loss, I got a million compliments! Even the second week on, people were saying nice stuff. That’s a pretty damn good thing and made me smile a lot!!
Congrats to everyone for their weight loss up til now and welcome to the new people. This is pretty much the only thread I have time to read at the moment but I’m determined to keep up with all your news. I’ve even resubscribed just for this!!!
Woot! Lost 2.5 lbs last week - huge considering I’m getting closer to my goal and have been doing this for awhile now.
172/141.5/135
I’m rethinking my 135 goal now though. Seems a little too high now that I’m only 6.5 lbs from meeting it. Still, I’ll probably just see where I am when I get there before I decided on anything lower. Not too much lower, mind you - I think 125 would be the lowest weight I’d be comfortable at, though that’s just a guess. As I get smaller, a loss of 2.5 lbs makes a much bigger difference than it did when I was 170.
I’ve had a small bit of success in the past two weeks. Last week I saw 174.5 on the scale one day but that didn’t last. Today I’m 175.5 which I can live with. Better than 185.5 which I was around January.
I’ve been drinking (alcohol) a lot less. No more daily wine consumption. I’ve also returned to a mostly low carb lifestyle. Mainly no bread (which I find is a binge trigger) pasta, white rice or potatoes.
And I’ve redoubled my efforts to go on a walk every day. 3 mile walk amost every day last week and every day so far this week.
I’m very grateful that this weight loss thread has survived this far into the year and very grateful to all of you who post. It’s comforting and inspiring and I just want to take a minute to say thanks.
I do elliptical and rowing machine. I like both. I was doing elliptical and swimming, but I got burned out on swimming- it ate up too much time in my morning schedule and it sucked to have to share a lane with other people, some of whom swam way slower than me and screwed up my pace. So I picked rowing as a replacement and I really enjoy it. For me there’s something really cathartic about rowing, and it’s a good all-body workout.
