2007 Weight Loss Club, April

I know exactly what you mean. I no longer talk to the Tastycakes or Little Debbies here. I am very happy with some greek yogurt, a sprinkle of Splenda, and some fresh fruit salad. As a matter of fact, I am going to get some right now.

I got a bit flustered on Saturday. The exercise videos on OnDemand are getting fewer and far between. I’m fearing that they’re going to be pulled altogether soon. Leslie Sansone has ONE walking workout now, and it sucks ass.

So I picked something else. Turns out it was not really aerobic at all. It was more like 40 minutes of the special Put tdn In Severe Pain Workout. Almost all weight training. It kicked my ass. At the end was an ad for a DVD series that they were selling. I figured I can afford 4 easy payments of 19.95 each, call now and pay just 3 easy payments. My sweaty brain told me that this was a Good Idea.

So I called. Man, that call was more of an ordeal than the workout. And longer. The moronic phone operator would not deviate from the script. “Would you like a fitty dollar giff certificac for Walmarc, Circuc City, or Targec? That comes with your three easy pavemants of only 19.95.” Turns out those are three additional “pavements.” And there’s the free stretchy band and handy booklec, for three easy pavements of 19.95. And the DVD insurance policy, where my DVDs would get replaced if lost or stolen, for 3 easy pavements of 9.95. On and on it went. If I’d said yes to everything, I’d be making 3 not-so-easy payments of about $120. For mostly junk.

By the end of the call, I was practically yelling at the dumb bitch that all I wanted was the original DVD set. And I made her promise that that was all I was willing to pay. I made her promise three times. But I have a bad feeling that this is a really skeevy company. At least I have a customer service number and a 30 day guarantee.

I bet all that yelling burned some calories.

Seriously, the last thing I wanted to do after that particular workout was deal with a phonecall like that.

tdn The beauty of weight training is that building muscle ramps up your metabolism so that you burn more fat when you’re not doing anything. I always liked that idea. Good luck with your new videos. See if you can find the Belly Dancing workout on cable (BrightHouse, right?). I don’t know how good the work out is but the scantily clad, beautiful young woman dancing provocatively should get your heart rate up.

Today our corporate wellness people sent us a message that “You get a do-over in life…By adopting healthier habits you can turn your body in a new direction and within three years be in the same condition as you would have been doing it right 90 percent of your life.” That message from Dr. Michael Roizen who is associated with the RealAge web site. They’ve got a picture of him and the caption says he’s 61. He looks like he’s about 35. Incredible.

They were focusing mostly on weight loss and obesity and I found my reaction to this news interesting. First I was congratulating myself that I’d already started my “do-over” and was working on my lifestyle adjustments.

Then I though, hell, if that’s all it takes why not screw off for a few more years and do it over later :D. How 'bout I live like a hedonist for 14 more years and do it over when I turn 60? Will it be too late?

Well, after one week on eDiets, I may or may not have lost two pounds. (Two pounds is the kind of thing that being hydrated (or not) can do to you). I’m not really certain it should count until there’s a trend.

On the obviously good side, I’ve been eating breakfast and I may possibly have eaten more fruits and vegetables in the past week than I did in February and March combined. Now, if I can only keep that up.

tdn, which DVD series was it that you ordered?

Almost every workout video has scantily clad young women in great shape. Even Billy Blanks has the Billy Girls. But yes, I’ve not only seen but tried the hula video. I don’t have the hips for it.

amarinth, I ordered
Beach Body. (Warning, ugly confusing site with popups)

I ate a lot of Easter candy and I don’t feel guilty about it. “A lot” is an easter cream egg, a caramel egg, a reese’s mini-egg, and a couple of small marshmallow eggs. That’s more candy than I’ve eaten in a year, and I totally felt like I needed to detox after that. Bleah.

I bought FIVE POUNDS of strawberries. I’m gonna poop red! :o

I’ve been having a really hard time lately sticking to plan. Yes, I know, this is what ALWAYS happens at the end of the semester. And it’s not even the end yet! It is approaching a critical mass of stress, though.

I’m not tracking, but I am still trying not to go too overboard. All of the food I buy at the grocery store is still what I’d buy on WW, but I’m not as good about what I’ve been ordering out. I was down 0.2 pounds last week, and hopefully I won’t be up this week.

I’m thinking about refocusing on exercising, at least. I haven’t been to the gym since spring break. Again, time is of the essence, so I’m not sure how well it’ll go, but exercise is supposed to help with stress, so, you know.

I didn’t eat too much candy (okay, well two jelly beans, one Cadbury creme egg, and one marshmallow egg) but I did have two pieces of cream puff dessert. And two Rice Krispie bars with M&Ms. The cream puff dessert was made with sugar-free pudding though so it couldn’t have been too bad. Right? Yeah, whatever I have to tell myself.
This coming weekend is going to be rough too. It’s our annual pool tournament weekend so I’ll probably be half in the bag by noon on Friday. (Don’t worry; only happens once a year.)
176 this a.m. but was 175 Saturday a.m.

I had no easter candy, but did have easter goodies. A party on Saturday I had some beer (first since March 7th) and a slice of cheesecake. Mom had an Easter meal on Sunday *and *baked me her famous Chocolate Chip Cookies as an easter gift. I had several, but froze the rest. I was good all day, but I’m loathe to see the Doctor’s scales tomorrow…

How are you feeling, Khadaji? I hope your recovery is going well.

Hoo, what little I lost last week essentially came roaring back yesterday (plus I missed my traditional Sunday workout, too). Here’s to a more responsible remainder of April. :fingers crossed:

I’ve been doing WW for about a year and I’m down almost 40lbs from my highest weight (37 year old male, most I weighed was 212, I’m down to about 175 now). Made my lifetime a while back and I’ve been holding steady for several months so I feel that I’ve got it as part of my daily routine, rather than something special that I have to remind myself to do.

Just got back from my buddy’s bachelor party in Las Vegas and I actually lost 1-2 pounds in 4 days. Few things that helped me:

  1. WW “core” is what has been working for me, I stick with it. It was also Passover so easier to avoid the temptation of pizza, bread, pasta, etc.

  2. I’ve learned that there is always an opportunity to exercise, no matter how short the trip. So whenever I travel, I pack a pair of shorts, running shoes, wicking shirt, MP3 player.

  3. The Wynn (like the other hotels) has a very nice fitness center. Like the other hotels they charge what feels like an exorbitant amount ($65/3 days, that’s on top of expensive rooms) but it was probably the best buy I made in LV since I used it 1-2 hours a day. Lift weights, hit the treadmill, ride a bike, steam in the wet/dry saunas, feel like a million bucks afterwards. I was also sharing a room with a friend, we are both early risers (me by nature and he has a small child so he’s used to it) so we were up at 7:30am to hike along the strip, can do about 90 min fast walk before the sun gets high enough to start cooking you.

Anyhow I didn’t drastically alter my normal eating pattern, even through our big blowout dinner at Delmonico’s. Dessert, for example, was some sorbet (which I shared with the table) and a cup of coffee after, rather than a monster slab of cheesecake or a sundae or whatever. Plenty of exercise, lots of water (necessary in that climate).

Had a great time, no guilty feelings, will still fit into my suit at the wedding.

 Thank you for asking. But alas, my recovery has taken a turn for the worse. Last week something began growing out of the top of my scar. My doc thought it was fluid so he took a needle and tried to excise it (proper term?) but all he got was blood. He then thought it might simply be irritation from my stomach binder and told me to put some gauze on it to prevent it from being rubbed. By Thursday it was twice the size as it was Tuesday (when the doc saw it) and today it is the size of two half dollars. It is painful to the touch. We are going to try to figure out what it is tomorrow and what to do about it. Probably another minor procedure, hopefully done with a local. Bleah. I am tired of this nonsense!

Whine whine whine.

As the saying goes: It is what it is.

They say a little whine every day is healthy (as long as it’s rhed whine)

Seriously, I hope you’re feeling better very soon!

Maybe it’s an alien? Aliens aren’t all bad. After all, I am one.

Edited to add: No, I am not from space. I’m Canadian.

Don’t believe her! With that albino skin shining like a floodlight, you KNOW she’s from some other planet. Her and Skipmagic, extraterrestrial siblings, kind of like Riff-Raff and Magenta, only without the elbow sex and mylar wardrobe (although I have to admit, I haven’t seen the inside of Skippy’s closet so I may be wrong on that one)…

Skipmagic has banana hair?

I never knew.

Well gosh, I should think so! That sounds terrible. I hope it gets figured out and taken care of today. (And I hope it’s not an alien.)
