Yeah, because all the other teams don’t ever take chances on players with character issues…right?
Please.
These are freaking football players, not choir boys.
Granted this kid hit his coach, been to more schools than Chad Johnson, has a rap sheet…but he’s also a very late pick and one of the most prolific collegiate RB’s in the last couple years.
So if he doesn’t work out, he gets cut, no big deal.
Omni, the Bengals haven’t had player problems in quite awhile while many other teams have. Why don’t you focus some of your misplaced sarcasm on them for awhile instead?
I died a little when I watched Marko Mitchell and Courtney Greene came off the board right before the Bears picked. It probably wouldn’t have mattered because the Bears tend to draft guys they worked out personally in the later rounds and I’m not aware that they looked at either of these guys closely, but they would have been excellent fits.
I freaked out when I saw ESPN post us picking Lance Louis (TE). There’s no fucking way we need a tight end with Clark and Olsen on the roster, but upon closer inspection I see that he’s 303 pounds and runs a 4.68 40yd-dash. I have to assume that the Bears are projecting him to convert to Guard with some optional use as a Special Teams player and Jumbo Package TE. I like the move, he’s a physical freak that seems like an asset and luxury pick who can fill a couple needs in the short term.
Derek Kinder is another guy that we worked out and evaluated at Halas Hall. The scouting report on him seems to have him rated well above the 7th round prior to his ACL injury. The Bears have a habit of grabbing guys with medical issues when their stock is rock bottom. It’s a decent strategy when you are drafting for depth with luxury picks, but the Bears have more pressing needs. With luck the comparisons to Bernard Berrian are apt and this guy can win a spot. He’s got better size than the other WRs we have on the roster but he still lacks that difference making size that we used so well with Moose Muhammad.
All these late round guys have ifs and buts associated with them but there are legitimate reasons to think they could really outplay their draft position. Boom or bust prospects mostly. I can usually live with that from second day picks, but without a 1st or 2nd round draft choice and some big, gaping holes on both sides of the ball they needed doubles, not home runs.
I didn’t. Flacco could just as easily flame out. Quarterbacks are weird creatures. Given that, I’d say Flacco has a better chance of sticking around and not flaming out due to his surrounding cast.
Flacco was carried by that defense and running game. He didn’t do anything spectacular last season other than be a younger version of Trent Dilfer with more wheels.
Baltimore has needed some decent wideouts for awhile now. And as a Bengals fan, I hope they never get them.
Well I wasn’t too disappointed in the Steelers’ picks. They filled some holes I thought they had - if the picks pan out. I guess we’ll see come autumn, eh?
This is true, but I think teams should reasonably expect one of their rookies to make an immediate impact. Just about every successful team in a given year gets first rate production from a rookie. If you have to wait for everyone to develop you’ll probably loose half of them as FAs before you really can hit your stride. Some guys can develop over a few years, but if they all have to you are looking at an endless run of 8-8 seasons.
The Panthers’ last two picks were Duke Robinson and Captain Munnerlyn. They were trying to select a British Expeditionary Force or something. It’s a hell of a pair of names.
ETA: Or not quite. Duke Robinson’s real name is George. But he’s Smokey Robinson’s grandchild and that should count for something.
Because more of the black quarterbacks can scramble. If Peyton Manning got up in the three bills range nobody would care as long as he could still sidestep the rush and wing the pig. Russell and Young are inaccurate, and they (theoretically) make up for this deficiency by picking up yards with their legs or buying time for somebody to get way open.
Nobody ever called Daunte Culpepper, Doug Williams or Michael Vick (:D) lazy. Nobody’s ever called Donovan McNabb lazy either, as far as I can remember, although people did question his conditioning after that Super Bowl (not unreasonably).
Omni, considering that you didn’t have any first day picks, I’d be pretty pleased with your draft. I’m wondering what Rod Marinelli could do with a guy like Gilbert, and Iglesias will be an excellent complement for Hester and the other downfield guys you’ve already got. He’s a bigger Wes Welker- won’t go downfield much, but he could catch 100 short passes.
