2009 NFL Draft Day Conversation

I completely agree we are a bad team and probably the most dysfunctional in the league. But if Russell managed to put up Flacco-like numbers when surrounded by more dysfunction and less talent how can you say Flacco is a rising star and whether or not JR is a bust is still up for debate?

Turns out not exactly the last.

Okay, generally the last. I should have qualified that.

I fell asleep on the couch, it saved me from all kinds of stress and frustration.

The Bears drafted Johnny Knox a very fast but slight WR from a small school. Again Lovie goes to Texas to find a kid. The guy has gotten quite a bit of attention during the predraft process and scouts think he has the talent to be a star, but I worry about how he fits into the Bears system. I’m always a fan of speed on offense and the Bears are speed-poor at the WR position, Hester aside, but we desperately need size and physicality at the position. Knox feels like Hester v2.0, you can’t run everyone deep every play an hope for pass interferences. You need someone who can go up and get a ball in the red zone and move the chains with a short curl. The ideal scenario is if Cutler turns this guy into Eddie Royal, but I doubt it will happen.

Marcus Freeman is a player I like and we really needed some depth at LB. Hopefully he can compete and steal the starting SLB spot from Roach/Hillenmeyer as a rookie and make the defense tougher against the run. I’m not sure picking a depth position over a S when Clemons was still on the board is a good idea, but I at least think they got a decent player here.

Al Afalava is a SS prospect the Bears took an interest in that isn’t rated on most peoples board. He’s a bit of a workout warrior, has elite strength and speed with good size. He fits the prototype but he was mostly viewed as a Strong Safety and not a Free Safety. In the Tampa 2 the difference is minor and I’m not in love with our SS options, but there were other FS prospects out there who made a little more sense notably Courtney Greene. Angelo’s staff does know how to find good DBs late in drafts, but they deserve the benefit og the doubt on this one, but I worry about getting max value for a guy that most people think would have been available as a Undrafted FA.

The Bears have already taken 2 WRs, I wonder if they’ll take another one with one of their 7th rounders who has better size like Marko Mitchell or Aaron Kelly. There are still a handful of guys in the 6’4" range that possess good hands and vertical speed from smaller schools and I’d love to see the Bears add one.

Oh Bengals…how cute.

I’ll root for this guy. I love the guys from the small schools that most people haven’t heard of. He’s lightning fast, too. Didn’t he run the fastest 40 time at 4.29?

I’m a bit surprised to see Rashard Jennings still on the board. I had heard some good things about him. He’s a risk for sure (small school, questionable dedication), but I had heard he was rising up draft boards.

Derrius Heyward Bey was the fastest. That’s why Al Davis grabbed him.

He was 3rd in the 40 at the combine with 4.34. He might have been timed faster unofficially at other workouts. I really hope a NFL weight and training program can turn him into a real threat. If he can bulk up and get stronger while maintaining that speed and quickness he could be a game breaker, but he’s a bit of a project.

Not true apparently.

Oh, and I don’t know how legit these times are. I have no idea if they are combine or pro-day times or what.

Damn, the great names are coming fast and furious now.

Fui

and

Captain

ETA: And EJ Biggers.

I can’t wait for the Packers to draft “Fucku I Kickyourass”

Where are you getting your numbers? The NFL website has the official Combine results and they show Heyward-Bey at 4.30 and Knox at 4.34. I’ve read on blogs and message boards that some scouts hand-timed him at 4.29 but hand-timing is unreliable and it simply doesn’t have precision beyond 2 sig figs.

The Panthers land an All-Name team guy in Captain Munnerlyn!

I edited my post before you posted that to indicate I found the official combine times.

Your website is pretty suspect in that it has a number for Crabtree who was hurt and never ran in the scouting process at all.

Or…Brad Jones. Heh.

Yeah, and that’s why I said I edited it (and thus the [edit] tag) to link to nfl.com.

If he makes the team, I’ll make it my mission to get my whole section to stand and salute when he makes a play.

I’d go with shouting “Captain, My Captain!!!”

The last pick for the Packers is in and it’s a OLB, Brad Jones. I know nothing about him, but his YouTube videos seem pretty good, but there is not much information about him otherwise. Here’s hoping.

The Lions finally got a OT to protect Matt Stafford. I actually think Murtha is a hell of a value here, I thought he’d go a lot earlier.
