2009 NFL Draft Day Conversation

On my computer, it looks like the Rams just drafted Foster Brooks, the lovable drunk. They must need to fill the need in heavy drinking as Leonard Little gets older and older.

Yeah for TT. Curse him for making me curse him!!!

My favorite pick of the draft!!

Now, onto grabbing Zach Potter!!!

Guess they failed to grab Koren Robinson in free agency.

Heh. Saw the Meredith pick and laughed out loud. Merry Christmas, Hamlet.

And BP has been a pretty good leader too - he’s had a run in with the law, but he’s still a good guy by all accounts

That’s a good home for Little Joe, RNATB. They need a return man, so he’ll get a shot there.

Here was my list of late round guys I liked:

Sebastian Vollmer, OT, Houston - 2nd Round, pick 58. Not so much of a sleeper I guess.
Marlon Lucky, RB, Nebraska - Still Available, but I’ve soured on him a touch.
Roy Miller, DT, Texas - 3rd round, pick 83. Another non-sleeper apparently.
Victor Butler, OLB, Oregon State - 4th round, pick 110. Booooo!!! I wanted him.
Quan Cosby, WR, Texas - Still available.
Tyronne Green, OG, Auburn - Round 4, pick 133.
Kraig Urbik, OG, Wisconsin - Round 3, 79.

I guess I underestimated the draw of some of these guys.

Other guys I’d like:

Zach Potter, DE, Nebraska
Myron Pryor, NT, Kentucky
Mitch King, DT/DE, Iowa

And, my favorite named guy who I want:

Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State.

These late rounds make for some interesting times.

Hey! A Rutgers QB got drafted. That may be a first for my alma mater.

Congrats.

What do you think of Kenny Britt? Did you see much of him? Is he worth a first round pick?

Is Brian Hoyer dipped in acid or something? How’d he not get to be the 4th quarterback drafted?

Also, Cedric Peerman is amazing value in the 6th round.

Britt and Underwood were definitely talented, and Britt played against some good competition in the Big East. Teel is only an average-to-good QB, and Britt put up good numbers. He’s not going to a great QB in TN either. I think he probably was an early-to-mid 2nd rounder, but not a terrible reach at that spot. He’ll be productive. He’s a tough kid.

Well, the Packers use their 6th round picks taking chances on a couple of prospects with some upside.

Jarius Wynn, DE, Georgia

and

Brandon Underwood, CB/S, Cincinnati

I know next to nothing about these two, but both seem to be guys who have little production, but have shown some potential. Wynn’s a JUCO transfer, and Underwood transferred from THE Ohio State University when he couldn’t cut it there. Both picks have a high chance of being worthless, but in the 6th round, they may be worth a chance. While I’d rather grab one of my guys, I’m not going to worry about these guys too much. Plus, we got Jamon Meredith in the 5th round. So fuck yeah.

Hey, TT is on ESPN! It’s a learning process!

And Bear is gone.

Underwood is a bad seed. He left Ohio State after missing multiple meetings and not being able to get his grades up. He’s a playmaker, but he might be a dick.

Nah, he just throws like he’s ON acid. He barely cracked 50% completion percentage with a 9 td/9 int season in a pro style offense this last year. I don’t like him much.

I see the Bears got a guy with a name almost as good as Bear.

Al Afalava.

You can call him Al.

Drops, my man. Drops. He had a bad receiving corps and the offense was a very heavy run-first offense. Look last year where he had a lot more touchdowns when he had a NFL-caliber receiver.

I’m not a Michigan State fan, but Brian Hoyer was the fourth-rated quarterback this year and definitely at this point, is worth a flyer.

Aaron Brown? Sooooo the Penn State receiver we drafted won’t be the special team guy. Mr. Brown will?

I applaud adding depth to the running backs, though. We need it.

You know, ESPN is about like the Fox News of sports. They are so biased it’s really painful to watch. They absolutely adore teams from the big markets - LA, NY, Boston, etc. Come on, Sanchez had 16 starts at USC, admittedly a great program that plays top-notch teams, but can you really declare him the second coming when USC is so much more talented than pretty much every team in the country? And remember Booty and Leinart - not EVERY USC QB is a star like Cassell and Palmer.

Also it was their dream come true when he went to the NYJ and they just keep stroking it. This guy wasn’t even the top player taken at his position yet it’s an absolute love-fest. They even go beyond what he can do on the field - they are talking about how he can be marketed and the parties thrown to introduce him, etc. And he’s so good looking and Latino, etc. Come on!

Another thing that I find interesting is how much perception is everything. Jamarcus Russell was drafted 2 years ago and his first year was wasted due to a holdout that was partially his fault and partially the Raiders fault. But he came out at 22 so he was young and when he finally started last year was just 22 or 23 so he was still very young. The Raiders have very little talent around him, but he still put up decent numbers. In fact, his numbers are very comparable to Joe Flacco. Yet Flacco had much better talent and went into the playoffs, certainly not due to his terrific play carrying the team, yet he is hailed as a hero and a rising star player. Yet with Russell the “jury is still out” and they are not saying he’s a bust, but they are just saying…ya know. And a lot of this is based on the perception that he is lazy because he ostensibly ballooned up to 300 pounds in the offseason. I follow the Raiders very closely and never wanted us to draft him to begin, I wanted Adrian Peterson, so I would have been somewhat vindicated to see him exposed even though it would have hurt my team. But I have NEVER seen any proof he was that big. None whatsoever. He is a solid 260 but he is also 6’6 and a very large man.

I am the last to call race into question, but it really wonder why all the black QBs are lazy (Vince Young is another) and immensely talented, but they aren’t that bright and don’t work hard. It’s something that just makes you raise your eyebrows.

Am I completely off base here? I will admit I am biased and getting frustrated and just can’t wait for the season to start so we can finally see these guys play, but I genuinely feel this way.

In a similar vein, Matt Leinart going to parties was horrible in Arizona, but they’re talking up all the parties and places Mr. Sanchez can attend.

Also, Mr. Russel is playing for the Raiders, who are a bad team and have been for a few years. The Raiders can make a turnaround, although this draft didn’t seem to do a whole ton towards it.
