A fucking FB? Is this a fucking joke? Our tackles are old and injured and we’re drafting a fucking fullback. Granted one who will help with our short yardage situations, but for fuck’s sake who is going to play tackle? Breno?
Bah.
The only way this makes sense is if they like Meredith, Fulton, Cadogan, and Tuopu equally and they think they’ll still get a shot at one of them later.
Overview With Jacob Hester having graduated, Johnson, a former linebacker, finally got the opportunity to be the Tigers’ full-time starter at fullback in 2008. Before the 2006 season, the coaches approached the then sophomore and asked him to move to the offensive side of the ball. He was reluctant to make the move, but the staff promised that he would get much more playing time than he did during a trying freshman season on defense.
Johnson loves to hit, so lead blocking for the Tigers’ physical running game turned out to be a perfect fit. Despite playing on a team that featured standout offensive linemen like Herman Johnson and Ciron Black, he ranked second on the team with 11 touchdown-resulting blocks in 2008.
At West St. John High School, Johnson was regarded as one of the top prep linebackers in the state. He was a member of the Baton Rouge Advocate Super Dozen as well as being selected to the New Orleans Times-Picayune’s Top 20 Blue-Chip list. He earned All-District honors in 2002 after making 122 tackles.
Along with present LSU teammate defensive lineman Tyson Jackson, Johnson helped lead his team to a 14-1 record and the state Class 2A championship in 2003. He also saw action at fullback, rushing for 800 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior.
In 2004, Johnson red-shirted at Louisiana State, where he competed on the scout team as an outside linebacker. He appeared in just one contest the following season, recording one solo tackle in the Mississippi State. He shifted to fullback in 2006, appearing in 12 games, but carried just twice for 6 yards.
With Hester shuffling between fullback and tailback in 2007, Johnson had the opportunity to start four of the 14 games he appeared in. He did not get a chance to carry the ball, but caught three balls for 21 yards and posted 35 knockdowns.
Johnson started 10 games as a senior. He scored three times on 14 rushing attempts, producing 28 yards (2.0 avg). He registered 72 knockdowns and caught a pair of passes for 33 yards. He also recovered two onside kicks for 14 yards in returns.
HE’S A FULLBACK!!! A fullback who doesn’t catch the ball well and carries the ball a couple times a year. Unless they plan to stick stubby arms Lang at RT, we have more pressing needs. I didn’t hear a whole lot of complaints about Kuhn and Hall.
Yeah, they’re scared. And stupid.
Meredith may very well be a bust. But, even if he busts out at LT, at the very least he can move inside and be as good as, or better than, Lang. And it’s the 5th fucking round. Meredith’s upside is miles above that of Lang, or of Quinn Johnson.
really? you know better than the professionals who spent thousands of hours analyzing players for this draft? Please, share your sources!
The Packers were terrible last year at third and short situations. Johnson is probably the best blocking FB in the draft. Word is that McCarthy is going to move back to more of a power running scheme. In that case a good fullback is a must! watch some Youtube clips of this guy,he pancakes someone on just about every play!
B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College
This pick was pretty easy with Tyson Jackson off the board. The Packers needed a nose tackle for their new 3-4 defense. They could have drafted Michael Crabtree, but he would have been a poor fit when you consider all of the receivers they have on their roster. (Pick Grade: A)
Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
The Packers traded up to secure a rush linebacker for their new 3-4 defense. Clay Matthews has NFL bloodlines and is a blue-collar player. Matthews had the potential to go No. 15, so this is a solid selection. (Pick Grade: A)
T.J. Lang, OT/G, Eastern Michigan
Green Bay needed an upgrade on its offensive line and T.J. Lang can play multiple positions up front. Another very good selection. (Pick Grade: A)
Quinn Johnson, FB, LSU
Arguably the top fullback in this class, Quinn Johnson should be able to open up huge holes for Ryan Grant. Pick Grade: B
Oh please. It’s silly hyperbole. Of course they know more than me. But to pretend that they are flawless in their strategy and talent evaluation is equally as silly.
He is still just a blocking fullback. Unless he has potential to protect Aaron Rodger’s back side, can block at the line of scrimmage or open the middle of the field like a solid TE, or be run behind as a RT, he will still be a nothing more than a blocking FB.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope he turns into the second coming of Lorenzo Neal while curing cancer and pulling a kids field trip from a burning building while jumping out of a pool. And maybe Meredith curls up in a ball at the sight of a NFL DE and never plays a play in the NFL. I have no problem being wrong about the draft: I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again. But so has TT, NFL scouts, and draftniks. Such is life.
I don’t really follow college football and I get most of my draft information from scouting reports I can read online. It seems to me like a lot of these picks are scouts trying to justify their paychecks.
I really like how TT has drafted since he took over. Early, he traded down for more picks, in part because the team needed to build some depth and upgrade their backups, which he did. I loved him picking BPA (Aaron Rodgers) and mining small schools (Nick Collins, Greg Jennings) for some real talent. And he’ll take a few chances on good athletes, even if they don’t always pan out (Will Blackmon, Mike Hawkins). And he’s willing to trade up to grab a guy he loves like Matthews. Overall, He’s really done well for the organization as far as I’m concerned.
TT has earned a ton of respect and deference with me. He will get the benefit of the doubt from me for this draft, just like he did in his prior drafts.
But that doesn’t mean I have to agree with his every pick. Or that I’m not going to express my opinion in a way that amuses me.
Harris had issues with inconsisteincy, and he did not have good 40 time. May eventually be a free safety. Still, a great pickup for the iggles in the 5th round.
