2009 NFL Draft Day Conversation

Goddammit! 6 picks in and still no OL for the Lions. Well I’ll check back in in 12 years or so and see if the new GM and coach then have a clue.

Well, I may have been too hasty in shushing **Awesome **yesterday. The Broncos took a free safety and let the Lions get DT Sammie Lee Hill. Either they really like some of of the DLs left in the pool, or they’re planning some amazing deals over the next few weeks.

I have to admit a large amount of naivete about all of this – is it possible, legal, advisable to pre-make deals based on who drafts whom? That is, do teams daft a player with the sole intention of trading him for someone else?

It is totally possible, and done very often. However I don’t think think it is an guaranteed deal. I mean I don’t think there is any way to put enforcement beyond a gentlemans agreement on the deal if someone chooses to reneg. But It’s such an inbred world you would really screw yourself if you got that kind of rep.

I’m not closely following the draft but I went and checked up on the Bears today for the first time to see who they were grabbing and it reads like a list of “Who’s Who in Nobodiesville”. I don’t recognize any of them and am shocked that they haven’t grabbed an OT yet.

What’s wrong with Lovie man? Get your head in the game dude!

About Lions pick DT Sammie Lee Hill:

“Helped pull a man out of a burning house in August of 2007.”
Lions seem to be going for a lot of high character/natural leader type guys, with the exception of Pettigrew which was clearly a “best available regardless of position” pick.

And the Giants’ draft keeps getting better. Andre Brown is a great pick.

Alrighty, the Pack have two picks in the 5th round, so they get another chance to depress me and pick the “white, stubby armed, versatile, lunch pail lineman who will never be a stud, maybe not a tackle, but if we’re lucky he’ll be an adequate starter in a couple years” to go with the other 1,232,387 guys exactly like that that we already have on the roster.

My wish list:

Jamon Meredith
Mitch King
Zach Potter

Let’s go get these guys!

That is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY cooler than being able to jump out of a pool.

Anyone have an idea as to why Meredith is dropping like this?

Oops, left Marcus Freeman, OLB and Shawn Nelson, TE

Jarron Gilbert and his pool-jumping party trick go to the Bears in the third round.

Crappy senior year, including a move from OT to OG. I chalk it up to a persistent injury and I think he’ll recover and be good if not great in the NFL, but others may question his desire.

Will be interesting to see if indy can motivate Taylor to be the kind of player he could be.

Anyone know anything about the Bucs’ 3rd-rounder Roy Miller? Looks like a big boy, and he started every game at Texas for three years, so he can’t be too bad.

I once pulled an old lady out of a burning house, and nobody drafted me…

He’s a blogger.

I think the gist on him is that he’s a perfectly fine DT, but has a limited ceiling. I would expect him to be a good guy to rotate in on the D Line and he’ll do fine.

I once pulled a draft beer out of a burning house, and no one gave me an old lady.

crack, I think I just heard a stiff wind breaking Johnny Knox in half. He needs to be that fast, or else a two year old can bring him down.

That works. We needed to add bulk along the D-line in the worst way (see Carolina game, Week 14).

And the first punter goes!!!

Now comes the punter run.

Bah. Another chance coming for the Packers to piss me off and ignore Jamon Meredith.

Maybe this time they’ll grab a punter.
