My prep this year has been almost entirely limited to what I could get done at work (ten-month-olds will do that to you), so my draft is going to be a whole lot more “intuitive” than normal.

So I downloaded some projections last night, and had it weigh value based on our settings. I spent about an hour plugging the rankings in, and have come to the conclusion that I know absolutely nothing about the players this year. NOTHING.

Heh. No, actually - I haven’t paid attention to anyone. I’m leaning heavily on the Baseball Prospectus this year and hoping my spreadsheet formulas actually give me an accurate picture.

I think mostly the failing is mine for not studying it thoroughly enough. Of course, studying it thoroughly would mean I’d have to spend about two weeks doing nothing else. (Turns out I’m not using Prospectus. I’m using Forecaster.)

I only got six people interested, which really doesn’t sound like enough. Five in this thread I think, plus Alex (former member White Lightning).
Plus, my work has had Yahoo Fantasy Sports blocked for the last month, which is far longer than they ever have before - I fear that it might be permanent. So although I’d love to run another league, and would normally have no problem doing the work necessary for a keeper league, not being able to get into the league at the office makes me nervous.

I’m actually thinking of asking if someone would be willing to take over the commissionership of this league - also since I’ll be out of the country without internet access from April 10 to April 18. If anyone’s interested, drop me an email or a PM.

But I’ll be on tonight, that’s for sure! Hoping I don’t have my usual round 6 bounce out… think I’ll try using Opera this year rather than IE.

Guess I shouldn’t repeat my secret advice to Winnowill - don’t bother researching pitchers, just draft all the Rockies and Nationals pitchers you can get as early as you can. You’ll be golden!

Well, as long as you have a plan. That’s more than I’ve managed. Was going to furiously cram for a couple of hours before the draft, but my family managed to scotch that for me, so that guy whose every pick was put on the DL in the last 24 hours – this year that guy’s me.

I’ll post more reactions later, but this is very much the opposite of my usual roster - I almost never go closer so early, and I usually end up drafting starting pitchers WAY earlier than this. So of course, I love my offense - with Morneau, Pujols, Granderson and Chipper how could I not? And I think Choo will be a steal where I got him. Of course I’d be a lot happier if I hadn’t drafted an already hurt Troy Glaus… but ah well, I guess that was why he was available in round 12. And my SS position is a mess.
Of course my starting pitching is a whole bunch of risks… Harden is a DL All-Star, Gallardo and Price are very young, Weaver is a headcase, and Sanchez is just a hunch based on a high K rate.
I’m happy with my bullpen, although I wish I knew for sure if Lindstrom has the Marlin’s closer job. Chris Perez, even if he doesn’t win the closer job, should be great for holds.

1. (12) Lance Berkman: I love Berkman in this league, but wished he had outfield eligibility. His power isn’t dominant, but he’s a 6 tool player. I don’t expect him to steal as much as he did last year, but any help from 1B is excellent.
2. (21) Carlos Beltrán: Remember when he was a top 5 pick? Yeah - just like Soriano, he’s underrated in Round 2 nowadays. Factor in OBP instead of AVG (as well as playing CF), and he’s a great addition.
3. (44) Jonathan Papelbon: Like I said - a panic pick. Don’t get me wrong - he’s a complete closing stud, and his contributions to the ratios will really help. I just didn’t go into this draft expecting to go with closers.
4. (53) Adam Dunn: He was a late second round pick last year, and I regretted not taking him at the beginning of the round. 5 straight 40 HR seasons, and a lifetime .381/.518 hitter.
5. (76) Jay Bruce: I’m hoping he can steal more bases, but if he steals 10, we’re great. He didn’t have as great of a season in this league last year, but PECOTA projects him to hit .343/.511 with about 25+ HRs.
6. (85) Javier Vázquez: I wanted to focus on relievers, but needed a few strong arms to anchor the staff. Vazquez is going to make me competitive in Ks all by himself. And at #85, decent value.
7. (108) Jayson Werth: I may be higher than most on him, but I’m looking for well balanced players, and Werth fits the bill.
**8. (117) Pablo Sandoval: ** Might have been a lot early on this one. My brain was still in “19 team league” preparation mode, and had wanted to target this catcher eligible player who will be playing 3B every day. Do not discount the value of playing every day with C-eligibility.
9. (140) Kelly Johnson: Most underrated 2B out there. He hits for power and steals bases, while getting on base and gets extra base hits.
**10. (149) Mark Reynolds: ** My third base options were getting slim. He’s going to hurt my OBP a bit, but provides excellent power from 3B for a 10th round pick.
11. (172) Brett Myers: Best remaining pitcher on the board.
**12. (181) Cameron Maybin: ** Could be a total bust, but has a world of potential.
**13. (204) Erik Bedard: ** Assuming last year was a fluke, I’m looking forward to cursing the Mariners for blowing his leads throughout the season.
14. (213) J.J. Putz: I suspect JJ will be the holds leader this year, all while providing ratio assistance on par with the closing elite.
15. (236) Trevor Hoffman: My offense has been looking solid, so I’m starting to bolster my relief ranks. I love guys with tiny ratios - his are going to go up because of his age, but I expect a nice 1.15 WHIP.
**16. (245) Hiroki Kuroda: ** Also underrated, and good value.
**17. (268) Brandon Lyon: **I was amazed at how many saves were still available on the board at this point. I was also amazed when I clicked on his news article icon after the draft and saw that he gave up 4 consecutive homers Monday night. eek.
18. (277) Kosuke Fukudome: You know, I’m a little worried with this pick - but it’s the 18th round…
**19. (300) Ryan Spilborghs: ** …and this guy is still on the board!
20. (309) Rafael Soriano: I have plenty of saves, so his holds are welcome. He’ll probably steal the job from Gonzalez, because Soriano is sick.
21. (332) Cristian Guzmán: The 21st round is fine to wait until to get your starting SS, right? There’s nothing spectacular here, but nothing that’s going to hurt me.
22. (341) Dave Bush: Did you know that Bush has a lifetime 1.22 WHIP? That’s pretty good.
23. (364) Nick Johnson: Like I said - hope springs eternal. There’s nothing to lose here - you gotta draft your DL guy at some point.
24. (373) Joe Blanton: How did we draft SPs last year with 20 teams?!?

Overall, I love this team. It nails everything that this league has tweaked, and has only a few minor weaknesses.

All I can say for SURE right now is that, if my computer had cooperated, my first pick would have been Tim Lincecum, and my second would have been whoever I estimated to be the best 1B on the board at the time.

FIVE computers we have between the two of us. FIVE. And I couldn’t load the draft system quickly on any of them. :mad:
